For DOS they are mandatory unless the serial application does something about all the interrupt handlers that turn off interrupts for too long, starting with the keyboard interrupt handler. This is probably too hard to do if DOS is run in V86 mode. >I currently have eight serial ports in my machine. It won't work at full speed unless all the ports are never active in both directions at the same time. One port at 115200 bps bidirectional takes about 30% of a 486DX2/66 for interrupt overhead and overhead up to the read()/write() level. 8 * 30% is much larger 100%. With 16550s the overhead is about 12% per port so you can expect to have at least 4% available for doing real work while 8 ports are active :-). It's been a long weekend (note the time) but trial and error is always like that. I >finally< have wrestled my 3c589 into working BNC. I went over to the Linux 3c589_cs.c driver and read it (line by line) against FreeBSD's /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_zp.c. In doing so, I discovered some things Linux was doing that FreeBSD was not. This leads to the following patch to FreeBSD's /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_zp.c. My original of that source file came from the 2.0.5 cdrom. Here is the single diff-section patch: ######################################################################## *** if_zp.c Mon Jul 31 00:47:22 1995 --- if_zp.c.orig Sun Jul 30 17:42:19 1995 *************** *** 1069,1082 **** if (!(ifp->if_flags & IFF_ALTPHYS) && (sc->ep_connectors & BNC)) { #endif #ifdef ZP_DEBUG ! printf("START TRANSCEIVER"); #endif /* ZP_DEBUG */ - GO_WINDOW(0); - /* Set the xcvr */ - outw(BASE + EP_W0_ADDRESS_CFG, 3 << 14); - GO_WINDOW(2); outw(BASE + EP_COMMAND, START_TRANSCEIVER); - GO_WINDOW(1); DELAY(1000); } #if defined(__NetBSD__) || defined(__FreeBSD__) --- 1069,1077 ---- if (!(ifp->if_flags & IFF_ALTPHYS) && (sc->ep_connectors & BNC)) { #endif #ifdef ZP_DEBUG ! printf("START TRANCEIVER"); #endif /* ZP_DEBUG */ outw(BASE + EP_COMMAND, START_TRANSCEIVER); DELAY(1000); } #if defined(__NetBSD__) || defined(__FreeBSD__) ######################################################################## This patch is not elegant but it is enough to make BNC work without affecting UTP. I confess to being a total novice as far as the procedure for submitting bug fixes. If I have not given enough information for someone to handle getting this fix in, please just let me know. I can't resist quoting the comment from the Linux source file that made me first think I had found the answer: /* This is vital: the transceiver used must be set in the resource configuration register. Does there exist PCI based multiport I/O cards supported by (and known to work on) FreeBSD? If so what are the full name of these cards? * We would prefer 16 ports on the card at minimum. We have heard of BOCA cards that support this. Actually, support for the 7850 was added on June 4th, and should work in the latest 2.1 snapshot. It had: 32Mb RAM adaptec 7870 chip onboard (didn't ever seen such a fast disk I/O!) tvga9000i with 512k and D-Link EISA ethernet card, with SONIC chip on it. Couldn't get it recognized at all; is it really not supported or I'm missing something? The small book which came with it didn't give me any pointer about it's compatibility with any known card. Drivers for SCO and UW were present, though. After adding a line `controller eisa0' to a kernel config I got it at least found, but EISA probe code told me that "...no drivers installed". For a pity, I couldn't save and provide here the kernel messages. -- With best wishes -- Andrew Stesin, Elvisti.Kiev.UA sysadmin.
