Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk As most of you no doubt know, the 2.1 installer now has an option to load packages. Given that screen real-estate and the types of "GUI" objects I have are so limited, I'm noticing that many of the one-liner descriptions are being seriously truncated, and in many cases for no reason. I say "no reason" because looking at the comment in question will generally show lots of white space, poor use of the language, etc. The new packages menu is a cool thing and I think that many people will like it, but remember: How nice your ports entry looks on the menu is sort of up to you! If you chose a terse, descriptive name then it will look good on the menu. If not, well.. Some examples: Good: mshell-1.0 Mshell: a Unix menuing shell Bad: amanda-2.2.6 Amanda, The Advanced Maryland Automatic Network D As you can see, the latter was trucated at "D", giving the user no idea really what kind of automatic network utility it is! :-) I also realize that most of you never knew that there was any kind of limitation on comment lines and so I'm not ragging on the guy who produced the Amanda port - I'm sure he was perfectly reasonably motivated to expand the "AMANDA" acronym correctly and all, but it just doesn't fit and it's not very descriptive for the number of words used besides. Far better would be something like: amanda-2.2.6 An automated network dump tool Also, the package name and its one-liner will also always be printed together, so lines like: ical-1.9 ical-1.9 -- Ical is a calendar application Contain a lot of redundant information. We know it's ical and we know it's version 1.9 from the name syntax now, so "A calendar application" would have done just as well! :-) Anyway, it shouldn't take long to go on a pkg/COMMENT rampage and adjust these en-masse if everybody pitches in. I'll grep for my own ports and make sure I don't embarass myself.. :-) The end result will be a MUCH more professional looking package menu (and WEB pages), I'm sure you'll agree! Thanks! Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk The "screen-3.6.2" port does not work with md5 passwords still! :-( If you run it as root, or run it setuid root, it explodes, core dumps and/or runs a child process at 100% cpu in a spin loop. The reason for this is that the patch-ac file is flawed. In the current patch-ac file, it changes screen to do this: #ifdef PASSWORD #include /* for _PASSWORD_LEN */ #endif #include "config.h" .... #ifndef _PASSWORD_LEN #define _PASSWORD_LEN 30 #endif char Password[_PASSWORD_LEN]; This is wrong on two counts.. All the MD5 passwords I've seen were LONGER than 30 characters (34 or 35 I think), and config.h is where "PASSWORD" is defined! - meaning that the system include file is never #included (the system _PASSWORD_LEN is 128 BTW) because "PASSWORD" is not defined yet. Date: Sat, 28 Oct 1995 07:47:12 GMT Organization: Netcom X-Mailer: Forte Agent .99b.113 Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk Back in my days of using Linux, I got hooked on the MINICOM telecom program that came with it. Mainly because, since I only have 8 MB of memory, X ran really slowly, and for some reason, I find MINICOM's user interface a lot nicer than Seyon's, and it's easier to configure, etc. Anyway, I attempted porting the latest version of Minicom 1.71 (the latest version I could find), available at ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/comm/minicom-1.71.tar.gz. The documentation CLAIMS that FreeBSD is supported, however I had to do some (admittedly minor) code hacking (mainly the config.h and the Makefile) to get it to compile right. And it works, but with several (some minor, some major) exceptions: 1. Can't get any other key to work as the "meta" key, besides the clunky sequence. It would be nice to be able to hit to dial instead of D. (Is this a limitation/incompatibility with the FreeBSD console driver? And can it be fixed?) 2. Occasionally, the modem port (I'm using /dev/cuaa0) will "lock up" and refuse to work. This usually happens when I start minicom, and it tries initializing the modem; sometimes, it fails. Exiting and re-running minicom usually clears this up. tty problem? am I using the right /dev file? [My modem is an internal USR Sportster 28.8, and it worked perefctly well under an identical setup, except running LInux instead of FreeBSD.] 3. This is the major problem: I've configured my download protocols (zmodem, in my case, since that's the only protocol I ever use). Auto-downloading works fine... BUT, when the protocol exits (i.e. the file transferred OK), MINICOM totally locks up -- the only way to exit (and this is by no means a graceful exit) is to flip over to another VC and 'kill -TERM' it. This is really annoying, to say the least. Anyway, is there a better port of minicom out there? (I didn't see one in either /cdrom/packages or /cdrom/ports [Walnut Creek FreeBSD 2.0.5 release CD]). Does anyone even care? Am I the only one who prefers using a text-based comm program to using Seyon under X? Is the world coming to an end? [just kidding] Please reply by the lists (probably freebsd-ports). Thanks! I'll look into the current version of /usr/ports/shells/ksh and see if there's something newer, or if perhaps it's just something we're not doing proper signal handling for. I've also cc'd the ports group on this message, who will now be seeing the bug report for the first time. I downloaded the beta version from Netscape - but it could not load certain osf fonts, and barfed. I dont know where it is getting the osf font requirements from. An rc file? Problems also with Xarchie. If it gets an error, and flags the user with the error message, sometimes it does not wait for the user to click on the OK square - the prompt disappears and Xarchie locks up. No more interaction. I have to kill the window and start all over. Another problem is xdvi - It crahses the xserver (at least my xserver, which is the ATI Mach32 UltraPro (The controller has 2 meg ram). Perhaps the XFree86 suport group would be the proper audience for this bug.
