I'm sure there are I have not been watching the commits to closely in the past month or so, but according to the introduction, the handbook "officially" covers 2.1 unless otherwise stated. The new linux stuff does make it clear what is 2.1 and what is 2.2, so it passes. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-cvs-share Thu May 16 02:51:42 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-share Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id CAA12595 for cvs-share-outgoing; Thu, 16 May 1996 02:51:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de (irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de [141.76.1.11]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id CAA12549; Thu, 16 May 1996 02:51:20 -0700 (PDT) Received: from sax.sax.de by irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de (8.6.12/8.6.12-s1) with ESMTP id LAA17216; Thu, 16 May 1996 11:51:02 +0200 Received: by sax.sax.de (8.6.12/8.6.12-s1) with UUCP id LAA14609; Thu, 16 May 1996 11:51:01 +0200 Received: (from j@localhost) by uriah.heep.sax.de (8.7.5/8.6.9) id LAA01048; Thu, 16 May 1996 11:44:45 +0200 (MET DST) From: J Wunsch Message-Id: <199605160944.LAA01048@uriah.heep.sax.de> Subject: Re: cvs commit: src/share/doc/handbook contrib.sgml To: jfieber@indiana.edu (John Fieber) Date: Thu, 16 May 1996 11:44:45 +0200 (MET DST) Cc: joerg@freefall.freebsd.org, CVS-committers@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-all@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-share@freefall.freebsd.org Reply-To: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de (Joerg Wunsch) In-Reply-To: from John Fieber at "May 15, 96 11:20:18 pm" X-Phone: +49-351-2012 669 X-PGP-Fingerprint: DC 47 E6 E4 FF A6 E9 8F 93 21 E0 7D F9 12 D6 4E X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL17 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-cvs-share@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk As John Fieber wrote: > > Branch: share/doc/handbook RELENG_2_1_0 > > Modified: share/doc/handbook contrib.sgml > > Unless someone has a compelling argument to the contrary, I have > been operating on the assumption that all handbook work would be > on current and would just be brought over to 2.1 as a single > commit in the "final hour" before release. Shall i back the above out again? I'd suggest not.. Since this has been started already (last year after 2.1 was released), doing an 'cvs update -j' is going to be difficult. Since 'update -j' gives us no space saving in the repository (it copies the deltas, not reuses them) we may as well simply spam the -current version over the top of the RELENG_2_1_0 version.. The end result will be exactly the same in the repository and the person trying to do it will still be sane (assuming they were sane in the first place.. :-) :-) )) This is *only* an option for something like a chunk of the code that is desired to be in pretty good sync in the end. (eg: handbook, faq, things like bind, sendmail, etc that are virtually the same for both versions). Since this will blow away any 2.1-specific changes so this is **not** something that is to be done lightly. Since I've publically told people how to do it, let me spell out a dire warning for the general body of -committers: If somebody does spam something like this on 2.1 without getting an OK from DavidG (release engineer) and preferably myself (from a CVS repository perspective) [or another core member who's prepared to take the heat :-) ], they can expect to be taken out the back and shot if they screw something up. In fact, I would not be suprised if Rod Grimes volunteered to ship me his special "Flexi-Grip Supa-Thump Maxi-Hurt'em Rubber Truncheon" via special express delivery to aid in the task.. :-) Naturally, exemptions apply for people's personal specialty areas (eg: Jordan on sysinstall and so on) >-- >cheers, J"org > >joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE >Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) Cheers, -Peter From owner-cvs-share Thu May 16 05:00:13 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-share Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id FAA22573 for cvs-share-outgoing; Thu, 16 May 1996 05:00:13 -0700 (PDT) Received: from time.cdrom.com (time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id FAA22562; Thu, 16 May 1996 05:00:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.7.5/8.6.9) with SMTP id EAA09314; Thu, 16 May 1996 04:55:27 -0700 (PDT) To: Peter Wemm cc: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de (Joerg Wunsch), jfieber@indiana.edu (John Fieber), joerg@freefall.freebsd.org, CVS-committers@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-all@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-share@freefall.freebsd.org Subject: Re: cvs commit: src/share/doc/handbook contrib.sgml In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 16 May 1996 18:18:38 +0800." <199605161018.SAA04429@spinner.DIALix.COM> Date: Thu, 16 May 1996 04:55:27 -0700 Message-ID: <9312.832247727@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. I'm not sure if he was talking about just merging changes, but yes that's also true. David holds the bag for /usr/src/sys, I hold the rest. :-) I'm not sure how we're defining "The release engineer" for 2.1.x anyway, but in the past this has usually been the guy trying to make it all install and run for more than 10 minutes without collapsing and verifying that it matches whatever external standards for "new and improved" people have come to expect of a major point release. This guy has not generally been the happy guy. With the last couple of releases, however, we've begun to share the task so that "release engineer" is more properly "release engineering group" (thinking specifically of my recent collaborations with Gary and Poul-Henning). Since I hardly desire a return to the bad old days (release engineer == 1 person), I'd be more than happy to see this idea continue to evolve. Heck, I'd be happy to see the group, period! :-) There's quite a bit of work to do already piled up. If there are any known sections/blurbs/whatever that do not apply to 2.1, please let me know so that I can mention that fact in the relevant section. I would rather do it now, than have to do it at the last minute before release time. A good example is the new uid range stuff I added to edquota and documented in the handbook - I just added a note there mentioning that this feature was added after 2.1 was released. So, yes, I agree with the original comment that we should just leave the RELENG_2_1_0 (stable) version of the handbook alone until release time and try and make sure that the -current version of the handbook can be used equally by 2.1-RELEASE/2.1-STABLE and 2.2-CURRENT users. -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org "Go that way. Add an entity for majordomo at the same time. A bit of a style comment, the entities probably ought loose the `a' prefix which I used as a reminder indicating `author'. Something like `ml.hackers' would be better than `a.hackers'. In general, I'd like to be notified of any structural changes in the handbook (i.e. new sections, rearrangements and the like) *before* they are committed. > Avoid the use of contractions. It should read: "who do not speak..." It was the result of my finger taking over control from my brain, since I noticed it *just* as I was hitting return, but my fingers just wouldn't (or should I say would not) stop :-). -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org "Go that way.
