Nobody. :( As I've said before (probably in the doc list), I see the ideal FAQ as a dynamic document addressing relatively narrow topics with quick well defined answers. It should be highly responsive to the *current* state of FreeBSD, documenting quirks in particular releases, common pitfalls and the like. The handbook, on the other hand, should be for more in depth topics that cannot adequately be addressed in a 2-5 paragraph FAQ answer. Generally the topics are a bit more stable than FAQ topics, for example the Printing chapter. The FAQ addresses "I've got this little problem" or "Will X work?". The handbook addresses "I want to learn all about Y". Ultimately putting FAQ type material in the handbook would be counterproductive. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-cvs-share Sun Oct 6 12:55:23 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-share Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id MAA07099 for cvs-share-outgoing; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 12:55:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from fallout.campusview.indiana.edu (fallout.campusview.indiana.edu [149.159.1.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id MAA07087; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 12:55:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (jfieber@localhost) by fallout.campusview.indiana.edu (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id OAA09467; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 14:55:02 -0500 (EST) Date: Sun, 6 Oct 1996 14:55:02 -0500 (EST) From: John Fieber To: "Jordan K. Also, maintaining a good FAQ is no fun. It means camping out on the questions list where the people most qualified to answer the questions are invariably the same people who don't want to spend time reading and responding. This is where monitary incentives are used in commercial ventures. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-cvs-share Sun Oct 6 13:28:29 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-share Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA08877 for cvs-share-outgoing; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:28:29 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from jfieber@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA08862; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:28:20 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:28:20 -0700 (PDT) From: John Fieber Message-Id: <199610062028.NAA08862@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-share Subject: cvs commit: src/share/doc/FAQ FAQ.sgml Sender: owner-cvs-share@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk jfieber 96/10/06 13:28:19 Modified: share/doc/FAQ FAQ.sgml Log: Use just $Date:$ for the date, not the full $Id:$ Revision Changes Path 1.10 +3 -3 src/share/doc/FAQ/FAQ.sgml From owner-cvs-share Sun Oct 6 13:33:59 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-share Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA09252 for cvs-share-outgoing; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:33:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from jfieber@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA09222; Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:33:40 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 6 Oct 1996 13:33:40 -0700 (PDT) From: John Fieber Message-Id: <199610062033.NAA09222@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-share Subject: cvs commit: src/share/doc/FAQ FAQ.sgml Sender: owner-cvs-share@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk jfieber 96/10/06 13:33:40 Modified: share/doc/FAQ FAQ.sgml Log: Change a few s into s. Although it's not bad > to have one ;-)) We never discussed the merits of having *a* FAQ, simply the merits of keeping our *current* FAQ. I agree fully with John that a FAQ is a useful resource for answering topical questions but, as John also pointed, an unmaintained FAQ is nothing better than a home for outdated [mis]information and not very useful. Until we find a FAQ maintainer who truly takes it seriously, as none of our last few FAQ maintainers have done, we need to kill it. Once we can find a motivated FAQ coordinator who truly understands what the FAQ's all about and has time to do it justice, we can bring it back. Well, I suppose it was problem with the * configuration of sup.jp.freebsd.org, then. With sup.freebsd.org, you * are hundred percent right. Yeah...I "fixed" this a while back, you may want to check the CVS logs before changing something. :) The reason why it's done this way was because I couldn't really figure out how to write all the omit* stuff properly (see /home/sup on freefall). Now that I can look at Peter's src-all, we can probably change this to be the same as others. But the confusion is probably not worth it as everybody will have to change their supfile (again). Actually, I sent out a request to the administrator of sup.jp.freebsd.org and the setting there has been changed. So I guess it's OK to keep this file as it is.
