Is there any chance of still running routed by default, but using it only in router-discovery mode? (e.g. routedflags="-P no_rip") Or is it the interaction with ppp's default route that is the problem? WTF is going on here? :-( grr. I'm open to suggestions. Joerg stated that more people were being harmed than helped by our default routed configuration, and given that he single-handedly answers about 90% of the questions in comp.os.unix.pc.bsd.post44.freebsd.misc.questions.silly, I figured there was no reason to disbelieve him and disabled it by default. Now we have some people screaming that this is wrong, but nothing concrete enough for me to say "OK, so if I set ``router=routed'' and ``routerflags=-deadbeef'', it will work without hosing the ppp users. Fine, amended." Yup, it's supposed to leave them alone. I guess the real question is: have people been having problems since Peter did this fix, or is Poul's experience that this is a problem simply with older releases, and 2.2 doesn't have this problem? Peter's fix was done in August and never brought into -stable, so isn't in 2.1.6 but is in 2.2-ALPHA. I don't run ppp (and don't currently have a FreeBSD machine at all =( ) so I can't do the obvious test. I don't think the change was automatically applicable to 2.1.x, since it has a much older routed, I think directly from 4.4Lite, while the >= 2.2 version is the all-singing all-dancing routed from Vernon Schryver@sgi.
