The Archive Anaconda 2750S SCSI tape drive will not work with FreeBSD as shipped from the factory. Two kernel one-line kernel patches are required. The drive delivers excellent throughput, 370kB/sec with dump(8). These drives are no longer in production and can be purchased quite cheaply: ~$190. Physical Description

The tape drive is a 5 1/4" wide, half-height device. The medium gray plastic front panel has a green activity LED, a tape eject button, and a hinged plastic door that covers the tape slot. The door is spring loaded, and closes the tape slot when the tape is removed. While a tape is in the drive the door is held open by the tape. When loaded, the tape is completely within the body of the drive. The drive loads a tape automatically, it does not have a front panel slide lock. The body of the drive is made of cast metal. The printed circuit board is mounted on the top of the drive. (Customarily, the printed circuit board is mounted the bottom.) There are three pieces of fiber glass printed circuit board material mounted on the printed circuit board. Each piece is ~6mm high, and provide a minimum spacing above the electronics of the printed circuit board. The printed circuit board is silkscreened "Archive copyright 1992" and "anaconda main pcb 81422- rev 001" (the 001 is hand written. Physical Connectors and jumpers

The drive has one 50 pin SCSI connector, one 4 pin power connector and seven jumpers. The SCSI connector is mounted upside down on the printed circuit board. Pin 1 on the SCSI connector is farthest from the power connector and the SCSI connector keyway (cut-out) faces downward rather than upward. If this drive is used on an internal SCSI chain, you must either twist the SCSI cable or mount the other drives upside down. The drive has three single inline sockets for SCSI terminator resistor packages. Jumper Function (default) ------ ------------------ 1 SCSI id bit 0 (open) 2 SCSI id bit 1 (open) 3 SCSI id bit 2 (open) 4 Reserved (open) 5 Parity Enable (open, disabled) 6 SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 (open, SCSI-1) 7 Terminator Power Enable (open, disabled)

Before using the drive, place jumpers to select the SCSI id. Enable parity by shorting jumper 5. If you are using a SCSI-2 controller, short jumper 6. If the tape drive is the first or the last device in the SCSI chain, insert SCSI termination resistor packs in the sockets and short jumper 7. During boot, the kernel probes the SCSI busses for attached devices. Each device that is successfully probed and configured by the kernel is identified by its logical device number, SCSI controller, SCSI bus number, SCSI target (id) number, and LUN (logical unit number). I use the NCR 53c810 SCSI controller. The tape drive is target 4 on the second SCSI bus. It is the only SCSI tape drive, hence st0. The boot message depend on whether the drive is jumpered for SCSI-1 or SCSI-2 operation.

When configured for SCSI-1: (ncr1:4:0): "ARCHIVE ANCDA 2750 28077 -003" type 1 removable SCSI 1 st0(ncr1:4:0): Sequential-Access density code 0x12, drive empty

When a tape is inserted into the drive, two friction teeth grab the tape cartridge metal backing plate, draw the tape approximately 25mm into the drive, and then slide the tape foward and to the left. This movement opens the protective gate that covers the magnetic media and engages both the heads and the drive wheel. The drive will seek to the start of the data area on the tape.

I understand that this is just an example, but I suppose there are a few things we should pick out here: 1. Current 'real' QIC units start at 525 MB, and 1 GB hardly costs any more than 525 MB. Over here, I can buy a 525 MB Tandberg 3820 for about $500 + tax, and a QIC-1000, also from Tandberg, will cost about $600. 2. DDS units cost only a little more nowadays. Over here, (I'm guessing), you would probably not get one for $550, but you would for $650. 3. If you're backing up 600 MB partitions, you'll need at least a QIC-1000. QIC-1000 tapes cost (another guess) $25 a throw. Buy a drive and 10 cartridges (for 10 GB), and you've spent $850. 4. 90m DDS cartridges cost (I know this one) $5.50 each, and store 2 GB (I'm assuming that the el cheapo drive you're talking about doesn't compress). A DDS drive and 5 cartridges would thus cost $680 odd. 5. Buy more tapes (and who doesn't?), and the comparison looks even better for DDS. 6. Other advantages of DDS: it's quieter, faster, the likelihood of being able to back up your complete system/network is higher, the cartridges take up more space. 7. Advantage of QIC-xxx: in my experience, it's been more reliable. Of course, we should mention somewhere that DDS drives need frequent cleaning. Other ideas? This is a GA-586ATE/p motherboard with the triton chipset. The hard drive is an ATA-2 Seagate 32140A (medalist). Before the install lilo would boot the LINUX partition fine. Before I installed freebsd, I performed fdisk /mbr under M$-DOZE and verified that the system boots MSDOS fine. Then I deleted the LINUX partitions and verified that they were deleted. After all this preliminaries. I proceeded to install FreeBSD from the WALNUT CREEK cdrom. I chose to install booteasy on the MBR and used FREEBSD fdisk. Now the problem is after the install booteasy will not boot the freebsd partition. I am stumped. Never had any problem with booteasy before. What did I do wrong, any suggestions? While I am at it, does anybody know if someone is working on a MV-Jazz 16 sound card driver for FreeBSD? It's possible that it's 60 MB only, but later 5099's are reported to also be 150 MB. ``en24'' doesn't gimme a hint about SCSI vs. QIC-02. Does it have a SCSI connector, or a direct PCB connector (like 5.25in floppies, but 50-pin)? The latter is QIC-02. If so, try the `wt' driver. I think i'll be able to provide you with the interface card jumper and switch settings once i'm back at home. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Apr 10 06:00:10 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id GAA02369 for doc-outgoing; Wed, 10 Apr 1996 06:00:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from fslg8.fsl.noaa.gov (fslg8.fsl.noaa.gov [137.75.131.171]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id GAA02323 for ; Wed, 10 Apr 1996 06:00:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: by fslg8.fsl.noaa.gov (5.57/Ultrix3.0-C) id AA26814; Wed, 10 Apr 96 12:59:45 GMT Message-Id: <9604101259.AA26814@fslg8.fsl.noaa.gov> Received: by emu.fsl.noaa.gov (1.40.112.3/16.2) id AA186081262; Wed, 10 Apr 1996 07:01:02 -0600 Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 07:01:02 -0600 From: Sean Kelly To: msmith@atrad.adelaide.edu.au Cc: marc@bowtie.nl, doc@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199604100858.SAA22928@genesis.atrad.adelaide.edu.au> (message from Michael Smith on Wed, 10 Apr 1996 18:28:52 +0930 (CST)) Subject: Re: select question Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk >>>>> "Michael" == Michael Smith writes: >> If you think this is ok, could you commit it? This file is only ~400K and I've tried the install several times without success from booting directly from the hard drive. When it says to insert the root disk, it reads drive A: and then asks for the next floppy. But when I reboot the system, I choose the Standard Boot Option, it seems to go okay, but when it goes to load the kernel and give the | / | \ spiral effect, it doesnt. It just sits on the | and locks up. In the documentation, it says under "Before you install from floppies" that the root.flp is a gzip'd cpio file. All the other files *.flp do not mention anything about gzip'd. I just used rawrite and it seems to work fine. But every *image* file I have ever seen it 1.44Megs Any help would be appreciated.
