I just downloaded and it to a floppy-disk. Rebootet system and firstly used the "-c" command at boot-prompt. Set irq for "com2" to five, because there's the modem conected to and otherwise conflicts will appear (left the rest at standard or deleted them). Afterwards I followed the occuring screens as described in handbook. For sure I selected installing via ftp and ppp via com2. Pressed then ALT+F3 as recommended and first tried the "term"-command. Problem 1: After typing "term" and no input from keyboard was possible anymore. After reboot and again doing all the above described procedure, I tried other option in ppp-mode, but as you assume infact of this mail, I couldnt send a simple "at" to the modem. I believe in cleverness of those people who wrote the freebsd for PC's. If is sad, that one can do install by downloading "boot.flp" and get the rest of the OS via ftp, after rebooting the PC and following the appearring screens in a correct way, I think it must be possible to get a modem run from kernel as the only available programm at this stage of setup. So, where's my mistake ? Does anyone can give me usefull tips, how to go on ? So far for this time. We discussed about above two-byte code problem and concluded that we don't have to generate JIS for HTML because... 1. Lynx can handle any code(JIS/EUC-JP/SJIS) and the probability of judgement is high. 2. If Netscape Navigator misjudged the code of Japanese character, the user can specify the code with Option menu manually. 3. We don't have the locale for JIS in the current FreeBSD system. Actually, there are many locales in /usr/share/locale for Japanese character such as ja, ja_JP, ... but these are all symbolically linked to ja_JP.EUC. So, again, we propose the location of Japanese version of Handbook is: linuxdoc files --- /usr/src/share/doc/ja_JP.EUC/handbook/ HTML files --- /usr/share/doc/ja_JP.EUC/handbook/ Concerning another John's question: > Also, there should be a selection mechanism for what languages to > build/install. One last question. Looking into the future just a bit, if we get, say, a german translation, should it be de_AT.ISO_8859-1, de_CH.ISO_8859-1, or de_DE.ISO_8859-1? For someone building docs who normally has LANG set to de_CH.ISO_8859-1, should docs in a de_DE.ISO_8859-1 subdirectory be built? I suppose this boils down to the extracting the various components of the LANG variable and using a "best match" algorithm to choose which translation to build and/or install. Barring any complaints, I see no problem with committing the Japanese translation as described. I would like to hold off activiating in src/share/doc/Makefile until until a LANG based optional build is figured out and wired into bsd.doc.mk (or bsd.subdir.mk?). I just committed a Docbook to HTML transpec for instant. There is a lot of work yet to be done, but it is fairly usable for relatively short documents (there is no splitting into separate nodes yet). I'll bring the DTD in when I get a chance. (those chomping at the bit can fetch it for themselves :) If the results are pleasing, and you are willing to help out some more with the transpec, I strongly recommend using docbook instead of linuxdoc. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-freebsd-doc Fri Nov 8 22:44:43 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id WAA10760 for doc-outgoing; Fri, 8 Nov 1996 22:44:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from apache.superiway.net (root@apache.superiway.net [204.209.46.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id WAA10753 for ; Fri, 8 Nov 1996 22:44:36 -0800 (PST) Received: from LOCALNAME (tc3ppp14.superiway.net [207.134.251.152]) by apache.superiway.net (8.6.12/8.6.12) with SMTP id XAA22805 for ; Fri, 8 Nov 1996 23:48:10 -0700 Message-ID: <32843662.2691@superiway.net> Date: Fri, 08 Nov 1996 23:44:34 -0800 From: Gordon X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.02E-KIT (Win16; U) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: join e-mail X-URL: http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook.html Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-doc@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk join e-mail list From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Nov 9 08:20:16 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id IAA06554 for doc-outgoing; Sat, 9 Nov 1996 08:20:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from tokyonet-entrance.astec.co.jp (tokyonet-entrance.astec.co.jp [202.239.16.2]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id IAA06541 for ; Sat, 9 Nov 1996 08:20:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from amont.astec.co.jp (amont.astec.co.jp [172.20.10.1]) by tokyonet-entrance.astec.co.jp (8.6.12+2.5Wb7/3.4Wbeta5-astecMX2.3) with ESMTP id BAA00609; Sun, 10 Nov 1996 01:20:06 +0900 Received: from astec.co.jp ([192.168.23.1]) by amont.astec.co.jp (8.7.6/3.5Wbeta-astecMX2.4) with ESMTP id BAA11503; Sun, 10 Nov 1996 01:20:04 +0900 (JST) Received: from tau (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by astec.co.jp (8.7.5/3.5Wbeta-ppp) with ESMTP id BAA01066; Sun, 10 Nov 1996 01:17:54 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <199611091617.BAA01066@astec.co.jp> To: jfieber@indiana.edu Cc: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: When we change DTD? Note that there are currently a number of language specific things that are hard coded in the transpec. I think the way to handle this will be to have instant(1) interpret the LANG environment variable and pass appropriate flags to sgmls which will allow different language selections. -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================
