Do you plan to stay compatible with bsdi 2.0.1? 2.1? It appears I at least need an update to gcc to handle dos.h: typedef struct { u_char drive; ... } __attribute__((__packed__)) find_block_t; The compiler in 2.0.1 is gcc 2.6.3. What version supports this __packed__ stuff? I also had to change doscmd.h (see below) to get by some changes in the frame definitions handling. (I don't know if it is actually reasonable to just import the freebsd 2.1 definitions - I was planning to at least give it a shot before I got blocked by the __packed__ thing.) If you're pretty sure you'll be able to keep the kernel interface the same on bsdi systems, then I will do some more work to make the current snapshot compile. Otherwise, I guess I won't really be able to track the project - I don't have any machines that I can poke around with the kernel on these days. I think it would be fair to say that CMH is trying to make doscmd 'work' in the absolute sense - he has made massive changes to the code and done some drastic cleaning work. It's obviously not practical from his point of view to do that, and try to maintain BSD/OS compatability. The primary goal of the FreeBSD port is, at this point, to get it to work at all 8). Following which, I plan to take Charles' changes and integrate them with the code necessary for BSD/OS and FreeBSD, with perhaps a little help 8) The end result should be portable, and work far better than the current item. All I/we need are some time and more hardware. (I have a box due in today that should, providence willing, be a suitable platform for this work. Now to work out how to weasel out of the two-week training course I'm supposed to be giving 8) > Pace -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control (ph/fax) +61-8-267-3039 [[ ]] Collector of old Unix hardware. Or is it more fun to randomly guess and see how much you can annoy people? As I just wrote to Paul Vixie: I made an offer (to Keith) some time ago to work with someone at BSDI to make it run again under BSD/OS. I tried it myself with the last snapshot, but it didn't work for some reason, and I gave up in disgust. The VM86 interface in BSD/OS is *truly* baroque. Since then, I've completely eliminated most of the interrupt handling kluges and quit using sigreturn(2) directly except at startup time, so the code should be much more portable. Making it work under BSD/OS is mainly a matter of tweaking the single call to sigreturn(2) at startup (to deal with the fact that BSD/OS's sigreturn(2) doesn't work as documented) and saving/restoring the eflags bits that the kernel munches.
