    Hmmmm... so is this the trick?  I've been using this with success:

package=freebsd
        comment=The FreeBSD Project
        use_files=true
        site=ftp.freebsd.org
        remote_dir=/pub/FreeBSD/
        local_dir+/.1/freebsd/
        exclude_patt+|.*(-current|-stable|-CVS).*
        do_deletes=true

    However, if I include -current and -stable, mirror always times
out trying to fetch the remote directory.
