We could think about starting a wordpro directory however there are not a lot of people working on good quality word-processors my inclination for now is that editor is a good place and if in the future we get a few more word processors then we can re-visit this issue. Got to digging around some more and I figured out what was wrong. soundcard.c contains: #define CDEV_MAJOR 30 and the 2.2-960612-SNAP majors.i386 contains: 30 snd sound driver system But the provided sound/freebsd/makedev.sh script specifies a major of 33. I'm pretty new to digging in the kernel, so I don't know whether the kernel compiles in the major from majors.i386, sets it when booting from what sndattach returns, or what but at any rate there was a difference. When I remade my devices with a major of 30, that fixed it. The initial tests I've tried look good. Gotta call it a night, but I'll stress test it more tomorrow evening and let you know. I am hoping someone here can help me to get sound working on my computer. I have tried a lot, and followed all the advice I could get my eyes on, but with no success. System is: Pentuim box, FreeBSD2.1, Creative labs awe32 16bit soundblaster card. The relevant section in my kernel looks like this: controller snd0 device sb0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 5 conflicts drq 1 vector sbintr device sbxvi0 at isa? drq 5 device sbmidi0 at isa? port 0x330 device opl0 at isa? port 0x388 Also, upon bootup the speakers "pop", and the messages suggest the sound device is being probed (i.e no complaints whilst booting up) However, when I try and cat a .au file to /dev/audio, I get no sound, and the cat process just hangs there, ie cursor is not returned, and no error messages are given. All the devices exist in /dev. I am at a loss to figure this one out. Any ideas gratefully accepted. Here are some things that come to mind: 1) Try: cd /dev ls -l audio sh MAKEDEV snd0 ls -l audio See if you get a change in the device numbers. 2) The default volume should be OK, so that probably isn't it 3) IRQ 5 sounds right for the default card config. Might make sure the cards isn't on 7 (the other common one). By the way, if nothing else is on IRQ 5, don't think you need "conflicts". 4) Do you have a serial port using IRQ 5 too? 5) Is DMA 1 only used by the sound card? You also might check your BIOS config and verify that it and DMA 5, IRQ 7 are allocated for use on the ISA bus. The > last time this happened, it hung on one note for about 10 seconds, > then the system reset itself. I've seen this happen. Also, when playing sound files (rather than midi files) I've have the system hang, and play the same few seconds of the sound file over and over and over and over. > Has anyone else seen problems like this? I'm using a Tyan Titan-III (Triton-1), with everything PCI except the GUS-pnp. All SCSI disks, no IDE. Again, aside from the sound driver, things work pretty well otherwise. louie From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Aug 16 21:23:10 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id VAA13958 for multimedia-outgoing; Fri, 16 Aug 1996 21:23:10 -0700 (PDT) Received: from mailhost.coppe.ufrj.br (root@cisigw.coppe.ufrj.br [146.164.2.31]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id VAA13953 for ; Fri, 16 Aug 1996 21:23:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from jonny@localhost) by mailhost.coppe.ufrj.br (8.7.5/8.7.3) id BAA17458; Sat, 17 Aug 1996 01:22:45 -0300 (EST) From: Joao Carlos Mendes Luis Message-Id: <199608170422.BAA17458@mailhost.coppe.ufrj.br> Subject: Re: GUS PnP + 960801-SNAP To: gwh@spiders.com (Gene W Homicki) Date: Sat, 17 Aug 1996 01:22:44 -0300 (EST) Cc: multimedia@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199608162300.TAA16071@charlotte.spiders.com> from Gene W Homicki at "Aug 16, 96 07:00:51 pm" X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL14 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk #define quoting(Gene W Homicki) // Hey all, // // I'm using Amancio's GUS PnP Pro stuff form rah with // 960801-SNAP. When playing .au files I can only get noise. Ok, ok. It's alpha version. I'm just reporting. Maybe this can help. // // // --Gene // // // -- // Gene W. Well, my playmidi experience was: I can play midi files, but the volume is set to "not naudible". Unfortunatly, I can't change it with xmix. Try putting your amplifier the *louder* possible. If you don't have an amplifier, no chance. This is strange, but it's what I got. I use DOS when I want to hear MID files. // // "xplaymidi -g midifile" is seem to be normal operaton, GUI show midi // part track data, without SOUND. // // Systems config: // // MB : ASUS P55TP4N // SCSI : BT956C (PCI) // HDD : FB1080S (SCSI)x2 // Sound : GUS PnP + 1Mx2 // // -- Jun-ichi Okamura // Jonny -- Joao Carlos Mendes Luis jonny@gta.ufrj.br +55 21 290-4698 ( Job ) jonny@cisi.coppe.ufrj.br Network Manager UFRJ/COPPE/CISI Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Aug 17 13:22:20 1996 Return-Path: owner-multimedia Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA14222 for multimedia-outgoing; Sat, 17 Aug 1996 13:22:20 -0700 (PDT) Received: from cis.nctu.edu.tw (root@cissun10.cis.nctu.edu.tw [140.113.23.30]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id NAA14203 for ; Sat, 17 Aug 1996 13:22:13 -0700 (PDT) Received: from bbs.cis.nctu.edu.tw by cis.nctu.edu.tw (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA12528; Sun, 18 Aug 96 04:20:30 CST Received: from Mach.system.com (a237173.nctu.edu.tw) by bbs.cis.nctu.edu.tw (4.1/SMI-4.1) id AA18632; Sun, 18 Aug 96 04:20:27 CST Message-Id: <9608172020.AA18632@bbs.cis.nctu.edu.tw> From: "Jen-Bang Wei" To: Subject: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 18 Aug 1996 04:27:20 +0800 X-Msmail-Priority: Normal X-Priority: 3 X-Mailer: Microsoft Internet Mail 4.70.1155 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=BIG5 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org
