Peter is working on that bit of the code, so it > shouldn't be a problem for long (hint! hint! :-) Has anyone had any experience (good or bad!) with the AMI P6 boards? The 'Goliath' in particular looks interesting -- Quad P6 (anything from 1-4 processors) 1GB RAM maximum, 4-way interleaved, (DIMMS) 450GX (Orion?) chipset 2 CPU cards (2 cpus per card) 6 PCI slots 4 EISA slots full specs are here: http://www.megatrends.com/Motherboards/Goliath.html They claim to be shipping the board. A friend of mine has talked to the folks there on several occasions (AMI is in Atlanta) and apparantly it is indeed shipping. He buys his stuff straight from AMI. I probably won't be getting one of 'em, because I've got too much invested in SIMMS, and I wouldn't be able to sell them and recoup any of my investment any time soon... Besides, my friend says that the board is very expensive. (I think he mentioned in the 3K range, I'm not clear on whether that was with or without processors. There aren't any prices on their web page. ) Also, does anyone know about either of the ASUS SMP P6 boards? The P/E-P6RP7D looks cool, but it isn't shipping yet. It's got 8 SIMM slots, 6 PCI slots, an EISA slot or two, 2 P6 sockets, and NCR SCSI bios. The ASUS P/I-P65UP5 is a little more interesting -- it takes a CPU card, which can have either 2 Pentium or 2 Pentium Pro chips on it?! Apparantly the cards have either the Natoma or Triton II chipsets on board. It has 5 PCI slots. (one shared with an ISA slot) If anyone knows anything about those boards (or others), I'd appreciate hearing about it. I'm planning on getting something in a month or so.. When he bought the system, however, he asked if he could just get a second processor, and they told him yes, even though he was buying it with a 133MHz processor... I believe their is a general "CPU version" consideration to be made as well. I found a "Pentium Processor FAQ" on the intel web site which contains a table (under question #11) that lists features of various versions, including the ability of that particular chip to be used in a dual CPU board. It is a bit vague in places, does anyone know of a more definitive document for this question? Hmm...I have a 90MHz Titan-II that runs okay. I found that my ccd performance is significantly lower than with standard -current and that the system is somewhat unstable as a whole. I take this to mean that the SMP branch of -current uses a slightly old VM system. Could also be that I didn't do a 'make world' with the new kernel, which I probably should have...just lazy I guess. So, people keep saying that the SMP sources are available for SUP, but nobody has ever mentioned the collection name. Is it 'src-sys' release=smp? What I did: installed 2.2-960612-SNAP made a supfile that said: src-sys release=smp ... and succeeded in supping it moved aside /usr/src/sys, checked out new SMP src/sys: cvs -d MY_CVS_PATH checkout sys cd src/sys; make all; make install cd sys/i386/conf; [edit LOCAL, adding 'option SMP' ]; config LOCAL cd ../../compile/LOCAL; make depend; make kern_synch.c and ??? complained about "NCPU" not being defined. after several false starts I found I could "fix" this by doing the config, then editing LOCAL/opt_smp.h b4 "make depend; make", specifically: #define SMP 1 # this was already here #define NCPU 2 # this I added then the kernel builds cleanly. I am testing this with a NON SMP board, so perhaps the following is expected??? It boots saying (something like): FreeBSD/SMP: Uniprocessor kernel [ all the normal boot messages ] newmasks bio c0000840, tty c003009a, net c00300b9 then wedges tight. Questions: is the missing NCPU something I did, or a known bug? might this actually work if I had a real SMP motherboard? thanx in advance... -- Steve Passe | powered by smp@csn.net | FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-smp Fri Jul 19 22:32:37 1996 Return-Path: owner-smp Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id WAA14848 for smp-outgoing; Fri, 19 Jul 1996 22:32:37 -0700 (PDT) Received: from uruk.org (uruk.org [198.145.95.253]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id WAA14841 for ; Fri, 19 Jul 1996 22:32:34 -0700 (PDT) From: erich@uruk.org Received: from loopback (loopback [127.0.0.1]) by uruk.org (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id WAA04578; Fri, 19 Jul 1996 22:34:41 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199607200534.WAA04578@uruk.org> X-Authentication-Warning: uruk.org: Host loopback [127.0.0.1] didn't use HELO protocol To: Steve Passe cc: freebsd-smp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: SMP-compliant motherboards In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 19 Jul 1996 20:21:56 MDT." <199607200221.UAA19627@clem.systemsix.com> Date: Fri, 19 Jul 1996 22:34:41 -0700 Sender: owner-smp@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Steve Passe writes: > First, thanx to everyone who has helped so far, I'm real close (I think). ... > then the kernel builds cleanly.
