This I don't know... this is all happening on a large WAN covering all the hospitals & health installations in Nottingham. Is there a way of tracking MAC addresses other than doing a ping -c1 then checking the arp db. (this doesn't work BTW because none of these devices seem to respond to a ping). Andrew Webster wrote: >Yow, that looks like fun! >Do you have a windows NT server on the network running DHCP perchance? This is a possibility. There is a rogue DHCP server out there as I discovered because it was allocating stupid IP addresses to our PC's if it got its reply in before our DHCP host. We now use BOOTP with the freeware "billgpc" program on our PC's which works very well. But if it is this I don't understand why a) only one of our FBSD hosts exposed on the WAN is reporting the arp changes; b) why we get a sudden burst of changes, always on this particular IP address, then silence for anything from 5 mins to 8 hours; and c) why all the PCs (if thats what these are) should be trying to use the IP address simultaneously. mike@sentex.net (Mike Tancsa) wrote: >If this is the MAC address of a real device that should not be >changing, look into doing an arp -s to make the arp entry permanent >perhaps. well if this is a genuine malfunction of something, I guess the owners of this device might not be pleased if I changed the address for them. ---- clipped from original post ---- >One of our FBSD router hosts has begun to report what looks like some kind >of spoof attack. I am getting errors like those that follow in my daily security check, as well as popping up on the screen. What is causing these to occur and how can I fix them. To me it seems like a hard disk error, are there any programs like Scandisk for Win 95 built into FreeBSD 2.2.1? And if so what commands must I execute to run them. Then take a vt100 terminal with the same type of converter on it that you can plug in to whatever connection on said patch panel you want. This should solve your problem and is a cheaper solution than $350 for every 8 machines. So far I've found two products which seem to be able to do what I want, ie. take care of the "banking" side of the problem (credit card verification, approval, money transfer, etc.). What I really want is just something which takes CC data as input and magically transfers the money to my account :) I'm interested in hearing about real-life experiences with those two products (and others too!). In particular, what happens when "things go wrong", eg. wrong CC number, stolen CC number, etc. and other problems I don't think of right now but which will show up I'm sure. Check your cabling and interrupts. If this started happening out of the blue, you need a new disk. How do I configure natd / rc.firewall to get the gateway machine to 'proxy' for the unroutably addressed office machines? I thought that natd on the gateway could translate incoming packets from any 192.168.254.X box seen on the ed3 interface so that the packets would be sent to/from the internet over ed2 as if they had come from the gateway, and would be sent back to the 192.168.254.X machine as if the connection had been processed normally. Is that true? The man page for natd does not address the picture above, and in working with a test case I haven't been able to get any packets from a prototype office machine past the gateway. Apart from using a 'divert natd' statement, the firewall is not blocking anything. Even using one invocation of natd or one set of natd rules per office machine would be fine. -ecsd@transbay.net From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Dec 27 19:12:53 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id TAA10566 for isp-outgoing; Sat, 27 Dec 1997 19:12:53 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isp) Received: from new.voltage.net (ns.voltage.net [208.15.104.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id TAA10542; Sat, 27 Dec 1997 19:12:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from sward@voltage.net) Received: from arky.voltage.net (ArkyLady@arky.voltage.net [208.15.104.72]) by new.voltage.net (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id VAA06615; Sat, 27 Dec 1997 21:10:33 -0600 (CST) Message-Id: <3.0.5.32.19971227211044.007dcc10@voltage.net> X-Sender: sward@voltage.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32) Date: Sat, 27 Dec 1997 21:10:44 -0600 To: hardware@freebsd.org From: Susie Ward Subject: Cyclades & silo overflow problem Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I noticed a few posts about this in the archives, but didn't see any solutions.
