Could you help me, please? Whoops, you are right, I forgot to mention this. The guspnp support in my driver does not work well with ulaw. I am not sure why -- I set the codec in mode2 instead of mode3 as in the voxware/oss driver, that might be a reason of the malfunctioning (although, if this is the case, it seems to be a bug in the codec of the guspnp). One possibility could be to do the 16bit<->ulaw translation in speak-freely. cheers luigi From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Nov 25 03:01:32 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id DAA04808 for multimedia-outgoing; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 03:01:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from lismore.cc.strath.ac.uk (lismore.cc.strath.ac.uk [130.159.248.18]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id DAA04799 for ; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 03:01:16 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from baithori.kamdi@strath.ac.uk) Received: from royal336-27 [130.159.28.59] by lismore.cc.strath.ac.uk with smtp (Exim 1.61 #3) id 0xaIiq-00002Q-00; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 11:00:06 +0000 Message-Id: <3.0.3.32.19971125111250.0093a530@pop-hub.strath.ac.uk> X-Sender: nau97266@pop-hub.strath.ac.uk X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.3 (32) Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 11:12:50 +0000 To: multimedia@freebsd.org From: mr md baithori kamdi Subject: failure in the setup CD Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk hello, I JUST BOUGHT YOUR PRODUCT YESTERDAY...BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NO DRIVER FILE IS IN THE CD...AND MANY OF THE FORDER IS BLANK WITHOUT ANY FILE CONTAINING IT....PLEASE HELP ME TO FIND THE SOLUTION OR I WILL RETURN THE CARD BACK AND BUY OTHER PRODUCT!!! Can anyone explain [amancio can be more precise on this, but let's wait that he wakes up -- we are located 9 hours apart on purpose so we can give 24h/day support :) ] guspnp (which has replaced the "standard" drivers based on voxware 3.0) is based on voxware 3.5 with lot of FreeBSD adaptation and cleanups by Amancio and others (e.g. the AWE support was brought in by Randall i think). In addition to the GUSPnP and the SB16, it should also support many old, non-PnP cards. A nice feature of guspnp is that it supports the synth device so you can play midi files without eating CPU cycles. On the other hand, the "pcm" driver (the one in /sys/i386/isa/snd/) is a complete rewrite of the audio driver, aiming to support newer cards (mostly PnP and MSS/WSS clones) and with special attention to multimedia applications. > which driver I should use for which soundcard ? the answer is the usual: the one which suits best your needs. I've seen a lot of letters about sound lately, and I haven't read most of them because if's hard to tell when a subject is relevent to its title or if it's just two or three people complaining to each other. I think it's time for a faq, or a handbook page. Maybe there is one, but I think it needs to be noted a lot if there is. It should explain what cards need what drivers, to what extent they are supported, and future support. No one is more qualified to write it than Luigi and/or Amancio. How about it guys? This would be a great service to us sound-newbies, and it would save you a lot of needless typing, I think. While skimming letters, people seem to have to re-iterate once a week (at least) Thanks! Turns out that the problem is that PCM_ENABLE_* defines are located in sys/i386/include/soundcard.h which is not part of the guspnpXX.tar.gz file. I built a kernel with the sources that are distributed with the 3.0-971022-SNAP, by simply replacing the soundcard.h with the copy in -current, and by replacing sys/i386/isa/sound with the sources from -current. Next question. Amancio's web page which describes the setup for using full-duplex audio with vat4.0 is not available. Can someone give me some help in getting this to work? I currently have only a /dev/audio0, and as I recall, I need a /dev/audio1 as well. I tried creating a /dev/audio1 with the same major/minor numbers as /dev/audio0, but this had no discernable effect. -- Carl Harris Communication Systems Lead Engineer CNS Research and Development, Virginia Tech ceharris@vt.edu From owner-freebsd-multimedia Tue Nov 25 08:23:56 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id IAA23770 for multimedia-outgoing; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 08:23:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from castle.amgen.com (firewall-user@ns1.amgen.com [138.133.17.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id IAA23764 for ; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 08:23:51 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from 3xWM6HM8E@ardmei1n.com) From: 3xWM6HM8E@ardmei1n.com Received: by castle.amgen.com; id IAA16745; Tue, 25 Nov 1997 08:13:45 -0800 Received: from usr2-dialup49.mix2.atlanta.mci.net(166.55.51.113) by castle.amgen.com via smap (3.2) id xmap07224; Tue, 25 Nov 97 08:12:52 -0800 DATE: 24 Nov 10 11:17:51 AM Message-ID: TO: wemail@4uonthe.net SUBJECT: We will mail 4 U Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk LET US DO YOUR BULK MAILINGS!!! ..$250 PER MILLION THE WAY OF THE FUTURE FOR SUCCESS IN YOUR BUSINESS! In my view, this program should not do everything vat/rat does, but has two main applications: - be usable for "broadcast" applications e.g. where one wants to send (or receive) audio from a box without having to fire vat; taking this to the extreme, one could even think of putting the program in MFS on a bootable floppy (maybe with ppp...) to do simple internet telephony... - be as easy to use as a telephone, especially for point-to-point communications, so that one can possibly use it even without a screen, just a keyboard and the audio device (i.e. feedback comes through the headset, as in a telephone.) I and others already have some working code, which already interoperates with vat, and turns out to be quite small: prova# ls -l tel.tgz -rw-rw-r-- 1 luigi wheel 5156 Nov 25 18:13 tel.tgz prova# size tel text data bss dec hex 12288 4096 63776 80160 13920 I am calling for suggestions on two things: * what would you like the program to do ? remember that the program should remain small, so I am not too keen on including all the fancy stuff that vat does; e.g. RTCP support will be minimal, mixing different sources might not be implemented, etc. Among things I have in mind: - telephone-like commands, e.g. d dial h hangup r record p play a file - select source between mic, line and some audio file (so one can play previous recordings); - record conversations; - look names in a database so I can simply type d luigi to connect to luigi's "tel"phone (ip address/port are in a database) - what should be its name ? I have used the name "tel" for the first prototipe, which suggests the functionality (telephone) and is short to type. Surprisingly no app that I know is using this name, and hopefully nobody will be able to register the "tel" trademark and then sue us for improper usage of the name (see the recent issue on games...) There are of course alternatives, one could be aat (ascii audioconferencing tool) and in general i would go for a short and simple-to-type name. Feedback appreciated, and if someone has already some code like this, or wants to help in this effort, I'll be glad to cooperate. [P.S. sources for the current version of "tel" should be available in a couple of days once I have debugged GSM operation and possibly added LPC support] Cheers Luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Nov 26 02:18:50 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id CAA06226 for multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 26 Nov 1997 02:18:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-multimedia) Received: from silver.sms.fi (silver.sms.fi [194.111.122.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id CAA06214 for ; Wed, 26 Nov 1997 02:18:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from pete@silver.sms.fi) Received: (from pete@localhost) by silver.sms.fi (8.8.7/8.7.3) id MAA07105; Wed, 26 Nov 1997 12:18:33 +0200 (EET) Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 12:18:33 +0200 (EET) Message-Id: <199711261018.MAA07105@silver.sms.fi> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: Petri Helenius To: Luigi Rizzo Cc: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: command-line vat/like program In-Reply-To: <199711260837.JAA06650@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> References: <199711260837.JAA06650@labinfo.iet.unipi.it> X-Mailer: VM 6.22 under 19.15p7 XEmacs Lucid Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Luigi Rizzo writes: > > - be as easy to use as a telephone, especially for point-to-point > communications, so that one can possibly use it even without a > screen, just a keyboard and the audio device (i.e. feedback comes > through the headset, as in a telephone.) I have a PCI soundcard - Ensoniq AudioPCI, and would = dearly=20 like to get it to work in FreeBSD.
It supports Soundscape and Soundblaster emulation, = and I am=20 hoping to install it as one of
those. I have tried without success. I just get sb0 = not found=20 at 0x220 etc.
I have what seem to be the relevant portions in my = Kernel=20 etc.
The card is = detected on=20 boot, as a PCI device (TYPE=3Dmultimedia????)
My question is this. Do I really have any hope of = doing this=20 and does the snd0 controller work with PCI
devices?

Thanks for your = time,

Ken

At any rate, I have a SB32 (a SB16 + AWE synth), and I get sound with no problems. A couple things to check. Do you get sound if you plug something else (e.g. a receiver) into the line in of your SB16? If not, check the line-in volume control. If still not, probably a soundcard detection problem. Don't know about the Zoltrix card, but I assume it has a line out. Is this plugged into the line in of your audio card? Under FreeBSD, do you get sound if you plug the line out of your Zoltrix card into something else (a receiver)? If not, the bt848 driver may not be initializing the Zoltrix card completely (which wouldn't surprise me since the Hauppauge, STB [and Amancio's Intel card] are the ones that have gotten the most use under FreeBSD). The driver in 2.2.2-RELEASE assumes the sound source selection register is 3 bits wide. It is just luck that it works on as many cards as it do. (Sorry, Amancio - I don't mean to be dissing your work). To the person asking the original question: Try upgrading to the current driver (from 2.2.5-STABLE) and see if the problem go away. Otherwise, you'll have to experiment with the MUX selection values - I'll come back to you with driver patches to allow experimentation if this is the case. Eivind.
