I connect to the internet using user land ppp. I've just setup qmail on my machine. Now I would like to automatically download my mail from the solaris 2.5 machine I dial up. The solaris machine is using smail and I don't have root privilege's on it. Does any of the many packages ported to FreeBSD do what I want? Or can anyone suggest how I might set something like this up.? Thereafter, the patch may be * deactivated again. If there is a really FreeBSD-specific change that can't be caught by the BSD macro, you can just #include , which gives you a macro __FreeBSD_version. This macro is defined to be (roughly) the year/month of the particular release, for instance, 2.2R has this as 199701 while -current now has 199702. My "why" message never made it out the first time I closed this, so I'll do it again. I'm closing this because it's not something that the ports team is likely to be able to fix, and seriously diving into each and every one of the over 700 ports is probably not a responsibility it's capable of taking on, either. Simple build problems or FreeBSD-specific runtime artifacts are different, and should be PR'd but, speaking as one of the authors of "emu", I can say that this goes a little beyond what the PR mechanism was designed for. :-) That said, perhaps Michael Elbel or myself will try to fix it, but we both have a LOT on our plates these days and I'm not going to promise anything! :) If you're really motivated to see this fixed, you might also try looking into the problem yourself - it's probably just a bug in the ASCII terminal description. We now have three (3) ghostscript distributions, I can understand that we keep 4.03 (Aladdin's current), but I don't see much sense in keeping 3.5.3 in the collection. GNU's version (2.6.2) is outdated, I think the current version is 3.33. We should only keep the current Aladdin and GNU versions! The only reason I can imagine for keeping an old version is that versions dated before 1995 have support for GIF images (that became patented afterwards), but that would have been Aladdin 3.12. You know, normally I am 100 percent in favor of free software, but the Matlab folks very clearly want their program commercial, and there doesn't seem to be any pettiness involved in their actions, and there doesn't seem to be any lack of competition for this kind of software among stuff that _is_ free (like octave or scilab). Personally, it kinda feels like mere courtesy to leave this one alone. Take your pick: 1) Encouraging the use of a program in a way that arguably violates the BSD spirit, or 2) Doing your perceived duty as a porter to give FreeBSD users total choice over what programs they run. Maybe you should add: 3) Making a political decision not to piss-off potential FreeBSD supporters in the form of Matlab developers, as an easy way out. :) -- Outnumbered? Maybe. Outspoken? You can just "make configure", it won't run if the cookie is already there. :) * Yup. Tix defines its own ${INSTALL_PROGRAM} depending on some tests * from configure. I added the `-'. I wish those tests would see if you can strip a script.... :( * It needs some internal headers from Tk. I found the internal Tcl * headers in /usr/include/tcl; if the Tk port would install all its headers * in a similar way (${PREFIX}/include/tk maybe) I could probably get rid * of the pre-extract target as a whole. I'll bounce this to the ports list. I have no problem with this, in fact I proposed this a long time ago but some people didn't like it. However, since tcl (in the system) already does this, there is no reason why tk can't do it as well. For the location, yes /usr/local/include/tk sounds fine. If you have a list of files (and their final destinations, /usr/include/tcl has two subdirectories), that will be great. This thread started halfway into some problem (there wasn't enough context for me to be sure what that was), something about include files of some sort. It doesn't seem all that complicated to me, and if there's trouble with the tk port, I'll fix it, what's wrong? You know we're kinda behind the times. But tomorrow I'm on vacation for two weeks. And I have a lot of things to do. I think that I don't have the time and I don't want to make the port in a hurry. I'd say, if you can make the bb 1.0 port, so that it really works, go for it. In the FreeBSD handbook is a fine description how to make a port. Please keep an eye on the order of statements, so that Satoshi doesn't have a lot to do with reformatting. And don't include unnecessary statements ;-) That would be fine. As an example you have the bb-port, as it is now. And you have to hurry up, since the "freeze" of the ports collection is soon. 97/01/08 if I remember right. I was wondering if I could be * made the maintainer of this port, or what the procedure is in these cases. You submit an application, the selection committee will meet you in two weeks and you take an oath at the USENIX if you pass the test. :) Just kidding, there is no standard as to when one can steal the MAINTAINER-ship of another but if he doesn't respond and you're willing to do the work from now on, that's probably good enough. Please take a recursive diff ("diff -Nru") of the old and new directories and send-pr it with category "ports". You should probably CC:it to the old MAINTAINER as one last notice. Please don't gzip + uuencode the diff unless it's truly humongous (which probably won't happen for tinyfugue, it's is only 29KB including CVS dirs now :). Although there is no legal reason not to distribute it (I never asked for a fee, I added the author's statement, and I made it clear that it was for non-commercial use). I don't want to become a distributor of this stuff; if I wanted I'd just sent it to an FTP site, they usually have more bandwith than I do. I felt I didn't have the right to keep the software only for myself. My interest was to avoid having a distribution of Linux's binary version when we could have our native, and somewhat updated, version. Now I have realized that much better software is available in the public domain already, and our efforts can be better placed in porting Rlab or any of the many lookalikes. The "Classic" version of Matlab is cute, but it has little or no resemblance with the commercial version: personally, I'm buying Linux's version from MathWorks. Pedro.
