I am running on an ASUS PCI/I-P5SP4 motherboard (CMD640 IDE, aka the bad one), 100MHz Pentium, 32MB of memory, an ATI 3D Xpression video card, an Adaptec 1542 card driving a SCSI tape drive and a Toshiba 3501 CDROM and two IDE disk drives on the first IDE channel. I am installing FreeBSD 2.1.7 on the second drive (wd1). I also have a SB16 card and a 3Com 3C509 NIC. Mouse on COM1, modem on COM2. I boot from the floppy, visually configure the kernel so I have no conflicts (lest my 3C509, inhabiting an unusual IRQ/IOBASE, get confused) and choose novice installation. I create one large partition on the disk (wd1) and create a 100MB /, 200MB swap, 100MB /var and put the rest in /usr. I choose X Developer distribution and start the installation. First comment: <-------------------- On the screen for Basic X configuration the text at the top of the list recommends "..., xicf, xdcf ..." for a minimal configuration but I fail to see these two choices on the list. End comment ------------------------> I choose no DES, install from CDROM and add a PPP interface on COM2 (but don't bring it up right now). Second comment: <------------------------ Why can't I set up my 3C509 at this point? i.e. cycle through interface definitions till I'm done? End comment --------------------> I proceed: no samba, no gateway, no anonymous FTP, no NFS server or client, no WWW server, no customize console settings, YES set timezone (EST), yes COM1 mouse, yes configure XServer. Third comment: <----------------------- Nothing (appears) to happen. Why offer to set up the card if it doesn't do anything? Or rather if it is going to fail. Is this a general fault or just the ATI card? End comment ---------------------------> I choose a whole whack of packages I need/want. Here is where the real problems begin. First the installation hangs on xemacs. Failure #2, apparently after a lot of messages about files that "don't really exist". The information dialog is left on the screen and there seems to be no way to continue without starting the process over again. Which I do, and this time I don't choose to install XEmacs. So it hangs on installing linux_lib, tar complaining about being unable to create symlink to libm.so.4.5.26 because the file exists. Actually it complains about a set of six files twice. Restart process. No linux_lib, and it hangs on fvwm95, no special error messages, just stopping. Fourth comment: <-------------------------- Why isn't there some way to skip a failed package installation and proceed with rest of installation? C just exits entire installation process. End comment: ----------------------------> I restart process and this time choose NO packages to install, just to get installation complete and this works. Once the system is working I try /stand/sysinstall to install those pesky packages. Now everything installs just fine, except XEmacs and Emacs. The former still copies OK but during pkg_add it fails with those darn "don't really exist" file messages. Emacs just does nothing, not even copying. No disk activity, no nothing. Fifth comment: <---------------------- When XEmacs fails the info dialog left on the screen exhorts me to see the debug output. Where is it? Not on another VT that I can find. End comment -----------------------> First Question: <=================== What do I have to do to get XEmacs and/or Emacs installed from 2.1.7 CD? End Question: =====================> Sixth comment: <-------------------------- Why can't the installation process install a somewhat more sophisticated X Windows environment. I would be nice to get to something a little better looking than tvm and have to try to manual patch together a desktop. A series of screen snapshots in a setup utility? XDesktopSetup? Click on the look you like and I'll create the .whatever files and copy the appropriate window manager, etc. Not part of /stand/sysinstall, just pointed to from there! End comment: ----------------------------> Anyway, having just started to play with FreeBSD a few weeks ago with 2.1.5, then 2.1.6, then the HURD (momentary insanity) a short trip to 3.0 and now 2.1.7 I pretty much have the hang of getting a machine set up using FreeBSD. Nice job guys. Keep up the good work! We have a couple of Compaq Prosignia 300 computers. They were purchased for another project, and were to have run Sunsoft's Interactive UNIX. But Interactive wouldn't load on them, being unable to find the PCI NCR disk controller. So I commandeered them. I tried to load (the then-current) FreeBSD 2.1.5, but it had the same problem. No disk. On the odd chance that someone had made progress on that front, I downloaded the boot floppy from the 2.2-beta, which =did= find the disk. So, I proceeded to do a network install of 2.2-beta for practice. I got my 2.1.7-RELEASE CD-ROM in the mail Monday. I was curious if the disk controller code had migrated into the stable tree, so I made a boot floppy from the CD. I was pleased to see that it succeeded in finding the disk drive and the CD-ROM drive as well. So I proceeded to blow away the 2.2 stuff and reload the whole machine from the CD. Since this machine is headed into a production role, I feel better with the "stable" world for it. Unfortunately, I had failed to notice that although 2.1.7 now handles the SCSI controller, it does not handle the PCI ethernet adapter. Bummer. No network. So, here's the question. How hard would it be to put the PCI ethernet code from 2.2 into 2.1.7? Would that be loonie in light of my desire for stability? Seems at the minimum, I'd want to move the file /usr/src/sys/pci/if_lnc_p.c but it looks like I might also want /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_lnc.c /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_lnc.h to be moved over. Thanks, this was a documentation oversight (these dists are gone now in 3.2). Fixed. > Why can't I set up my 3C509 at this point? i.e. cycle through interface > definitions till I'm done? Erm. Stylistic, I guess. The first time you visit the network interfaces menu, you're expected to just be doing the minimum necessary work to find the media (as would be the case with any other media type setup screens). Once you're done, assuming you used the Novice install (or use another install mode and are familar with the Configuration menu) you'll be asked if you want to configure any additional network interfaces, at which point you should do your 3C509. When the new sysinstall is out, this will be fixed anyway since "network setup" will be more general. > I proceed: no samba, no gateway, no anonymous FTP, no NFS server or > client, no WWW server, no customize console settings, YES set timezone > (EST), yes COM1 mouse, yes configure XServer. > > Third comment: <----------------------- > > Nothing (appears) to happen. Which X setup tool did you pick? You did also remember to pick "X Setup Tool" from the list of choices earlier, right? If you check the debug screen, you'll probably see something like: /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup: command not found. If my guess is correct that you forget to load any of the configuration tools. > I choose a whole whack of packages I need/want. Here is where the real > problems begin. I didn't lick this one until *after* the release had already gone out. :-( > Why isn't there some way to skip a failed package installation and > proceed with rest of installation? If you update pkg_add from the latest 2.1-stable sources, this problem will actually go away. > When XEmacs fails the info dialog left on the screen exhorts me to see > the debug output. Where is it? Not on another VT that I can find. Heh. This prompt should probably change, you're right. When running multiuser it's in a file called sysinstall.debug, but this also isn't explained anywhere because I never really meant for the debugging info to be used by anyone but me once we were running multi-user. This is, of course, a weak excuse and sysinstall really should be using syslog to puke about things once we're installed. Will do. > What do I have to do to get XEmacs and/or Emacs installed from 2.1.7 CD? When it timed out it hung up the phone line and quickly redialed whenever some traffic appeared. Life was good. Now, trying out 2.1.7 with the same ppp configuration as far as I can determine, life is not good. ppp does not hang up the line (which I test by picking up an extension and don't hear a dialtone OR modem tones) but neither does it pass any packets. Nor does it redial. The only thing I have discovered that works is to turn the modem off and on (thank god for external modems!) and kill/restart ppp. After this drastic procedure ppp will dial up and communicate happily until it times out and once again enters some sort of limbo. Is 2.1.7 ppp really this brain dead compared to 3.0? Or is there something I have to do that is no longer required on 3.0 so I didn't notice its lack until I tried 2.1.7? It depends on how he added it. And what's that "Unknown command type" message? It also sounds as if wcarchive's pkg_foo commands are out of date.. :) Jordan From owner-freebsd-stable Sat Mar 15 09:13:07 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id JAA00406 for stable-outgoing; Sat, 15 Mar 1997 09:13:07 -0800 (PST) Received: from shrimp.dataplex.net (shrimp.dataplex.net [208.2.87.3]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id JAA00397 for ; Sat, 15 Mar 1997 09:12:47 -0800 (PST) Received: from [208.2.87.4] (cod.dataplex.net [208.2.87.4]) by shrimp.dataplex.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id LAA09079; Sat, 15 Mar 1997 11:12:32 -0600 (CST) X-Sender: rkw@shrimp.dataplex.net Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <199703151511.JAA12750@osti.rmt.i1.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Sat, 15 Mar 1997 11:13:12 -0600 To: Edward Wolpert From: Richard Wackerbarth Subject: Re: Current stable from which freebsd release? "Stable" is 2.1 (.7+ a little). 2.2 release will NOT automatically replace 2.1 as "stable" until it gets "a little time under its belt". Actually, 2.2 will NEVER replace 2.1 in the CTM distributions and I think that folks are beginning to see the wisdom of using symbolic links for "stable". Jordan already did that successfully for 2.2-GAMMA. I suggest that you track distributions by their "real" name whenever possible and simply use the descriptor such as "stable" to find out the latest system which has reached that particular level in its development cycle.
