This actually belongs in questions@freebsd.org. You will need to destroy your d: partition to make room for FreeBSD. FreeBSD requires it's own partition table entry. It cannot be installed in a DOS partition (although it can be installed *from* one). See http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/install.html for details. One advantage of the pop-up is that you can quickly see all availible options and select one quickly (if you're using a mouse); with the multi-line select you have to scroll through the entries, which I think is more tedious. Yes, I see this is not perfect. Still, it took me a month of usage to learn what lives behind the links on the current page, so I pulled in some 2nd level links. Maybe we should concentrate on the major ones. I like a home page better which gives me an instant overview of the ressources on the server; the quick index is fine if you know what you are looking for, but forgot where it lives. Hmmmm. Well, if we were trying to do this the way a corporation would do it, we'd have all pages standardize on a set of menus or a nice looking imagemap of some sort (perhaps saying "Welcome" in 5 or 6 different languages, arrayed on points of a star) which allowed you to change your location or language type at will. You should also be able to tell immediately that you're at "dem deutschen FreeBSD-Webserver" by the fact that: a) All the text is probably in German. b) The imagemap/menu will be set to say "Deutsch/Germany" by default. If it's an imagemap, the german section of the graphic might even be "lit" (I saw this recently on another vendor's pages and it was a pretty slick effect). > I think we should provide for localization in the build process whereever > it makes sense. Yep. We need to localize both for the content and for the web server (WWW stats, FTP download counts by region, etc). Consider: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/usr.sbin/sendmail/ (produces dir) http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/sendmail/ (produces redir to usr.sbin/sendmail/) http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/xxx/ (produces error msg) but http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/usr.sbin/sendmail/xxx/ produces a redirect to exactly that url. Luckily, Apache recognizes this, and provides the cgi output with a (not very helpful) Content-Type: application/x-httpd-cgi. I'm not concerned with where the server lives, but I am concerned that the two controls (mirror and language) interact and the interface obscures that interaction. The only way the controls can be truly independent is for each mirror to carry all languages. As long as there is an interaction, I'd rather keep it explicit as it is with the current mirror list--don't replace a single control with an obvious and predictable behavior with two controls whose actual behavior is not as obvious. Of course, this is just my speculation based on past experience with usability testing; I could be wrong on this one. :) > And, why not have a part of the page that tells you where you are? > ("Welcome to the main FreeBSD Web server." or "Willkommen auf dem deutschen > FreeBSD-Webserver.") Like the main FreeBSD source tree, all web files are in the CVS repository, under www. See http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/www/ for details on the revisions, or to retrieve single files. For the full picture, you might consider getting all of the Web stuff by CVSup or CTM, see the Handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook226.html) for details. It works fine, but I have been having trouble getting a PPP server going. I have had several attempts, but all have failed. What, I want to do, is set FreeBSD so users from other machines can connect to mine via the Modem, and run programs like Netscape, CuteFTP, and so on. Just like you do on the Internet, is this possible with FreeBSD. (I should Think So) I need to know what I need to do, to set this up, I have read the documents on the FreeBSD web page, and is a little hard to get going right. I have the WWW packages, but cant extract them with TAR, it tells me no files in archive, but there are, I can extract them using TAR for DOS. I mainly want the PPP server running, so I can setup so others can dial into my machine. Can you please help out here. I have others help me, and I greatly thank them, but nothing has come of it yet. In basic terms, I want WWW, NEWS, FTP, MAIL running, so users can use Windows95, OS/2 and so on, when connected to my FreeBSD. I think they have switched to drivers from Matrox. CDE was never available because BSD/OS still doesn't have PIC shared libraries as all other named *IXes. Thomas Roell -- chief programmer of XInside -- said, that without up to date shared libraries there will be no CDE for BSD/OS. At one time both AX and Motif were available from them.
