Guys,
Please don't panic, but I have a bad feeling about this article in
slashdot:
	http://www.slashdot.org/articles/98/12/09/1453206.shtml

We have to watch carefully: surely some people want to see the code
GPL'd.

(BTW, a port/package right now would be a good proactive measure.)

Why should we panic? All I see is some speculation about what might
happen with IBM's license. I doubt IBM themselves are all that sure
yet.

Having Jikes be GPL'd would hardly be the end of the world. It's
still usable as a compiler and I don't think that having GCC be GPL'd
has exactly hampered our efforts. We already have enough splinter
groups in the gcc community as it is anyway. :)

I can't resist rephrasing that: We already have enough splinter in the
*BSD groups without GPL anyway ;-).

Seriously, something like this happened with KDE, and the mixture of
commercial and GPL licenses is killing the project.

Your information is out of date. The only thing I know of which
caused problems with the KDE people was Trolltech's Qt license and
they've now fixed that. In any case, the problem in that situation
was that the license wasn't GPL *enough* and hence doesn't really
support your argument against the GPL.

In short, I still don't see what Pedro's got his underwear twisted up
over here. The entire thing seems like one great big yawn to me.

The new Qt license is better but still doesn't allow mixing with GPL
code, so said Stallman. Now people think over changing KDE's license a
bit away from GPL, which would make KDE usable, but them they couldn't
KDE'ize other GPL code anymore. And don't forget that so far no QT
with the changed license is available.

Isn't the GPL great? :-)

I agree that the GPL isn't a problem with Jikes.

Probably this is not the right list to write to ...

I've put a small FreeBSD Installation Guide written in *German* onto the
Web:

http://gwdu60.gwdg.de/fbsd/fbsd.html

I know, it is incomplete and should be much more elaborate. Nonetheless it
might be a little help in some cases.

Furthermore, since I'm an enthusiastic reader of the Daemon News, I built
a pdf file for each issue. In the case anyone is interested in downloading
them, here's the path:

http://gwdu60.gwdg.de/dnews/dnews.html

I haven't found pdf files anywhere else. If they really aren't
anywhere, I'll try to build them regularly in the future.

I assume the Daemon News Crew agrees to that service. Otherwise, please
stop me now!	:-)

Regards

Could we get a copy of the DN pdf files so we can include them as links in
our main sites and mirror sites?

Cool -- what a great archiving tool! I've forwarded this part of your
message to the DN core team for comment. In the meantime, I'm going
to grab your PDFs and take a look.

If you go read the Jikes license, it's not very GPL-like. It allows
you to create derivative works without owing your changes back to
the project, to distribute your work as you see fit, etc. The only
substantive difference between their license and the Berkeley one
we all hold so dear is the termination clauses and mechanism for
handling intellectual property disputes, which is probably wise for
everyone considered.

I admit I was wrong, sorry for the false alarm.

Maybe I am getting neurotic against GPL per'se !!
