It just dropped right in. Since I had no problems to solve, I'm probably no help to you. But here's what I did: I didn't do anything with the flashcode. What came in the machine Just Worked, so I didn't even look at the version. I did *not* put the video board in it. That's still in the cardboard box in the closet. There's no Xserver for it, and I don't think it even works as a character-mode console under 1.3.2, maybe in the latest snap. I used a null modem and seyon. I followed the instructions in ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.3. 2/alpha/INSTALL, but not carefully. But hey, I've done this kind of stuff many times before. It's a very nice document, use it. I used the floppy image ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.3.2/alpha /installation/floppy/install132.fs. I just got it by ftp to a FreeBSD machine and dd'ed it to a floppy: "dd if=install132.fs of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k". >From there I just followed the procedure, ftp'ed the tarballs and unpacked 'em. I tried fdimage and it didn't boot, then i dd'd it and it seemed to work, I need to get past the disk geometry and net card next. -Chris To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sun Jul 19 13:21:38 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA17182 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Sun, 19 Jul 1998 13:21:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from bone.nectar.com (bone.nectar.com [204.27.67.93]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA17177 for ; Sun, 19 Jul 1998 13:21:35 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nectar@bone.nectar.com) Received: from bone.nectar.com (localhost.nectar.com [127.0.0.1]) by bone.nectar.com (8.9.0/8.9.0) with ESMTP id PAA12588; Sun, 19 Jul 1998 15:17:51 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: <199807192017.PAA12588@bone.nectar.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 X-PGP-RSAfprint: 00 F9 E6 A2 C5 4D 0A 76 26 8B 8B 57 73 D0 DE EE X-PGP-RSAkey: http://www.nectar.com/nectar-pgp262.txt From: Jacques Vidrine In-reply-to: <199807191615.LAA11119@set.spradley.tmi.net> References: <199807191615.LAA11119@set.spradley.tmi.net> Subject: Re: Basic Question. But I did put in the frame buffer. The X server software supports ZLXp-E1. I figured I'd give this ZLXp-E2 a try. However, if it works not even as a character-mode console, that would explain some of the behavior! I wonder how I can confirm this. Guess I'll dig up some serial connections. Bummer! Hi ! I've heard of the existence of a port of FreeBSD to the alpha architecture. Is this just a rumour or is there something going on ? I could offer to help with some of the effort (just bought an alpha dec workstation) and am happily using 2.2.6 on several intel machines.
