Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 04:12:53 -0800 Message-ID: <9294.887803973@time.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. Hubbard" Sorry to send this to hackers, but this is the only way to get the message to many folks who have mail.freebsd.org accounts but subscribe under a different address - for reasons that will quickly become apparent, I can't send them email at their freebsd.org address. :-) A couple of weeks ago we lost all the /var/forward files on mail.freebsd.org and, since mail is configured to IGNORE $HOME/.forward files in favor of files in /var/forward, for many folks their mail simply started queuing up locally. We ignore $HOME/.forward for the simple reason that most people have their home directories on freefall, and if freefall is down and temporarily not providing NFS services for some reason then the $HOME/.forward files become unreachable by sendmail and it just dumps them into the local mailbox anyway. With our /var/forward/$USER file solution, it's at least robust in the face of NFS failures even if it's not very robust in the face of outright disk crashes with no backups. :-) In any case, the backup problem has been basically dealt with (we bought a tape drive) but we've still got a lot of folks who's forward files never got recreated and their mail is just spooling up on mail.freebsd.org as a result. If you are one of the following people or *know how to contact one of these folks*, please arrange for the email to be pop'd off of mail.freebsd.org so that we can reclaim the space. THANKS!
