I see a real opportunity in the Oracle Web Server market. Oracle Applications customers who migrate to Applications v11 will need to build a middle tier to support the network clients. FreeBSD and/or Linux were made for this. Because of the number of middle tier hosts necessary to support the clients, the license cost of commercial OS's will seem prohibitive. I'm sure only a minority of companies will have the courage to consider an Open Source OS in this role, but enough will to be very lucrative. -- Allen Campbell | Lurking at the bottom of the allenc@verinet.com | gravity well, getting old. The Linux version will probably not emulate well. I think that the Linux emulation layer has problems with any Linux app that uses Linux's native threading. > > Oracle's network computer division () uses > > FreeBSD as the OS, and their network computers run Oracle. > > > > I *believe* that they aren't releasing it because they don't know whether > > or not there's demand (and don't want to commit the sort of resources Somewhat. They aren't also happy with the performance of Oracle under FreeBSD. It was fast enough for their NC stuff, but not up to usual Oracle standards. John Dyson spent a bunch of time working on AIO extensions to speed up Oracle. I belive the AIO stuff is working in current now. Howerver, Oracle isn't about to release a product for an unreleased OS. ... > -- > Allen Campbell | Lurking at the bottom of the > allenc@verinet.com | gravity well, getting old.
