I don't know what the problem is, but you should be able to add some Emacs local variables to the file to automatically set the mode and so on. I'm going to do this to the English version when I split it out into multiple files (which I won't do until I've done all the replacements). doesn't offer much advice. It does list xemacs-beta@xemacs.org as being the address to contact if people can provide help with Mule, and I imagine this is the sort of project that will stretch it. > 5. There'll be another pass at some point, and this time para.pl will fix those up as well. I'm not a good one to ask - I'm not subscribed to the list in question nor do I have anything to do with it - I just happened across the oversight in the course of pointing someone else to a resource I knew existed. I'm currently in the process of doing the conversion, but have been somewhat slowed by the RSI. > What is different? > and, if we start translation, what place should I start from? > /usr/doc/handbook or /usr/doc/en/handbook? Depends. If you want to start right now then your best bet is probably doc/handbook. We can create a doc/kr (is that the country code for Korea?) directory, and you can start submitting the translated version using send-pr. At some point in the future you can then convert it from LinuxDoc to DocBook, using the instructions I am writing in doc/en/handbook/README. Alternatively, you can wait for the conversion to finish, and then work from the new handbook. This will be less work overall, but will take longer. How much longer depends on the results of my physiotherapy. It would probably be better if you started on the FAQ, which is not in the same state of flux as the handbook. > And, is there some guideline of translation Handbook(and other > documents, such as FAQ, manpages, examples) to other languages? doc@jp.freebsd.org is the Japanese translation project (I think that's the right address) and should be able to offer you lots of help. The reason I am asking is that I have some good notes on what I usually do to the FreeBSD box to even make it more secure Out-Of-Box. This include nosuid mounts, kern.securelevel + other sysctl changes, edits to rc.* & *.conf, lascomm accounting and etc etc etc. I'd like to put together an FAQ or a HOWTO regarding this and keep maintaining it on the regular basis. I'd also like to compare my notes with others who do more then just "vi /etc/inetd.conf /etc/rc.conf" to secure their system OOB. -- Yan Jan Koum jkb@best.com | "Turn up the lights; I don't want www.FreeBSD.org -- The Power to Serve | to go home in the dark." Excellent. Would you like to host this yourself, or would you like it to be hosted on www.freebsd.org? If you want to host it (this makes it easier for you to make updates to it) then use send-pr to submit the URL for inclusion in the tutorials links. If you'd like it to be hosted on www.freebsd.org, upload it to ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/incoming/ and send-pr the name of the uploaded file so it can be integrated. If you'd like to help out on other documentation, and know (or are prepared to learn about) CVS then let me know and I'll sort out commit privs so you can actively maintain the repository copy yourself. Read the back of a magazine like Unix Review or PC Week or something and see the "new products" section. You know, the place where they publish those little announcements which go something like this: "Yoyonetics Systems, a world leader in the fast-growing field of Applied Software Lethality, is pleased to announce their new release of Euthanix 5.0 - the latest and only operating system capable of killing interactive users via Yoyonetics' patented "VCCO" (Visually-Coupled Cerebral Overload) technology. Euthanix 5.0 offers a number of significant improvements over previous releases and is now Fully Internet Ready(tm) with support for both point-to-point and broadcast VCCO with TCP/IP encapsulation. Cancellation of unwanted NEWS and EMAIL articles has also never been simpler with 5.0's powerful new "Track, Find and VCCO" feature - neither relays nor forged headers can defeat the feature which Soldier of Fortune Magazine rated as "Unstoppable! A relentless, remorseless automaton of death! 4 stars!" in their August 1997 issue. For more information, please see http://www.yononetics.com or write ..." Well, if you could make one for FreeBSD (the 2.2.6 release being be a good event to announce), that would be just SPIFFY. If your efforts in generating some decent copy were also successful, we could send it to a number of magazines in addition to your professor and your warm fuzzies would be multiplied. :-) Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Fri Apr 10 10:43:51 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id KAA18119 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Fri, 10 Apr 1998 10:43:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from voicenet.com (mail11.voicenet.com [207.103.0.37]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id KAA18092 for ; Fri, 10 Apr 1998 10:43:42 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from schwenk@voicenet.com) Received: (qmail 6097 invoked from network); 10 Apr 1998 17:43:40 -0000 Received: from omni1.voicenet.com (207.103.0.31) by mail11.voicenet.com with SMTP; 10 Apr 1998 17:43:40 -0000 Received: (qmail 16866 invoked by uid 14559); 10 Apr 1998 17:43:39 -0000 Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1998 13:43:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Peter Schwenk X-Sender: schwenk@omni1 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG cc: freebsd-hackers@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD Press Relations In-Reply-To: <19980410012113.08515@urh.uiuc.edu> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, I'm a big FreeBSD fan, and I took a look at the NPR site mentioned below. Maybe our FreeBSD blurbs could out-number the Linux ones? Here's the URL: http://www.npr.org/yourturn/ Go to the Technology Topics section and click on the "Linux OS: Alternative to Windows?" link. Speaking of press relations, I was just reading yesterday's SF Chron, and in the People in Technology page/section (D3), Tom Abate seemed to dedicate space to some very important people in the "Free Software Movement". Linux's grinning mug along with Larry Wall, Paul Vixie, and Tom Paquin's stern faced ones were featured. Too bad Jordan (or any other core team member for that matter) were so kindly left out. Before I would hit the Enter key, however, I like to know something more about the destination of that loading! The manual does not deal with installation prerequisites in terms of required number, type (primary/logical), and size of disk partitions for native freeBSD, swap and other required or optional partitions; does not describe the partitioning process, and the installation of a boot manager. It does not describe the capabilities of the boot manager in terms of Where it resides? How many operating systems can it recognize? Beside switching to a selected operating system Can it activate the selected primary partition and deactivate the other primary partitions? Can it hide and reveal partitions (primary as well as logical) to aid the definition of the scope of view of an operating system? In your installation manual, in section 2.2.1, you state that  "Once you have booted from DOS or floppy, you should then be able to select CDROM at the media type in the Media menu and load the entire distribution from CDROM."  Before I would hit the Enter key, however, I like to know something more about the destination of that loading!  The manual does not deal with installation prerequisites in terms of required number, type (primary/logical), and size of disk partitions for native freeBSD, swap and other required or optional partitions; does not describe the partitioning process, and the installation of a boot manager.      Where it resides?
How many operating systems can it recognize?
Beside switching to a selected operating system
Can it activate the selected primary partition and   deactivate the other primary partitions?
Can it hide and reveal partitions (primary as well as   logical) to aid the definition of the scope of view of an operating system?

I would appreciate if someone could shred some light on these issues to help me to decide whether I should try to attempt to install freeBSD.
