If you are downloading this to a unix system, you can indeed get rid of the ^H symbols by piping the output through col -b. If you download it to an MSDOS/WINDOWS system, you need a word processor like Word or WordPerfect to do a substitution on the ^H symbols. It would be possible for the people who place these documents on the server to perform this magic before it is placed there, but they just don't do that. Meanwhile there is under development a system to enable the handbook to be produced in Rich Text Format. This will make it possible to print it without losing formatting. If you have arranged for your printer to do postscript (e.g., with apsfilter) then you could download the postscript version and print it that way. The correct name of the newsgroup is comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc, if we're talking about the same one. You might want to extend the list of newgroups even further, noting that there are newsgroups for various software. There's a newsgroup for newsreaders, for pine, for shells (comp.unix.shells, I think) and so forth, as well as newsgroups for programming languages, hardware, and so forth. The newuser tutorial is also available at http://andrsn.stanford.edu/newuser.html, and by anonymous ftp in either postscript or rich text format at ftp andrsn.stanford.edu in the pub directory, which are good for printing. Finally, it would be useful to have a description of where to go (maybe the answer is as simple as the tutorial; I'm not sure) to get the information on configuring ppp. This seems to be something virtually everyone needs to do and it is the MFAQ--the most frequently asked question. Thanks, good points which I'll follow up. The original intention was to have three concise sections separating FreeBSD, UNIX and X, a distinction which is not obvious to newbies. So far I haven't found enough really beginner level material to put an X section together, so that has been left for the next round. Under FreeBSD, two specific areas that clearly need more pointers are installation and ppp. They too are in the pipeline. Whether that means it should expand into more than one page, I'm not sure. At the moment I see it as a comfortable length to orient very new users to the main kinds of info available at their level, with plenty of scope for input from newbies (as well as non-newbies). This is not the kind of document that will ever be "finished" :-) Right now I'm wondering whether I should be spending my time learning things like SGML and diff, or organising more content, or just getting it up there so updates can be guided by how it is used. -- Regards, -*Sue*- find / -name "*.conf" |more To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Apr 19 16:43:37 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA10996 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 19 Apr 1998 16:43:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from andrsn.stanford.edu (root@andrsn.Stanford.EDU [36.33.0.163]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id XAA10961 for ; Sun, 19 Apr 1998 23:43:16 GMT (envelope-from andrsn@andrsn.stanford.edu) Received: from localhost (andrsn@localhost.stanford.edu [127.0.0.1]) by andrsn.stanford.edu (8.8.8/8.6.12) with SMTP id QAA21549; Sun, 19 Apr 1998 16:38:48 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 16:38:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Annelise Anderson To: Malartre cc: Sue Blake , freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Newbies resources - please check In-Reply-To: <353A64AF.6605CFA9@aei.ca> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Sun, 19 Apr 1998, Malartre wrote: > > > Annelise Anderson wrote: > > > The newuser tutorial is also available at > > http://andrsn.stanford.edu/newuser.html, and > > sorry butFile Not FoundThe requested URL /newuser.html was not found on this > server.Malartre Oops, you're right. Although instructions may be offered separately, the instructions found inside the zip archive are usually more complete. There is nothing in the HTML above that a windoze user wouldn't understand, nor is there anything to indicate that the method I describe is not valid for FreeBSD. For someone who thinks sin95 runs on every computer and every downloadable is the same deal, we don't explain in a way they can readily understand. Saying it's an operating system is not enough. After all, they call their GUI DOS shell an operating system, and it installs right over DOS. -- Regards, -*Sue*- find / -name "*.conf" |more To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Apr 20 08:35:56 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA15181 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 20 Apr 1998 08:35:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.kt.rim.or.jp (root@mail.kt.rim.or.jp [202.247.130.53]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA14956 for ; Mon, 20 Apr 1998 15:34:41 GMT (envelope-from kuriyama@sky.rim.or.jp) Received: from moon.opt.phys.waseda.ac.jp (ppp384.kt.rim.or.jp [202.247.140.84]) by mail.kt.rim.or.jp (8.8.5/3.4W3-rim1.1) with ESMTP id AAA09431; Tue, 21 Apr 1998 00:34:34 +0900 (JST) Received: from sky.rim.or.jp (earth [192.168.1.2]) by moon.opt.phys.waseda.ac.jp (8.8.7/3.5Wpl4/moon-0.9) with ESMTP id AAA16832 for ; Tue, 21 Apr 1998 00:26:36 +0900 (JST) Message-ID: <353B68F9.3DC44F44@sky.rim.or.jp> Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 00:25:45 +0900 From: Jun Kuriyama X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [ja] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Doc Team Subject: convert entity files Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-2022-jp Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I changed Japanese local repository. Jun Kuriyama -- At first, we need to prepare entity files about authors, lists and sections. This uses simple Perl script: ----- authors.pl while (<>) { s//; s/name='([^']*)'>/$1</ulink></emphasis>/; print; } ----- as "perl authors.pl authors.sgml > _authors.sgml". lists.sgml and sections.sgml need same step. And second, add reference entities to handbook.sgml. So we can build HTML files by typing "make". But now, many errors are occured. These will be fixed. I have > been told it is quite handy for designing personal > icons, folders etc. It seems that a clarification (at least one :-) is necessary: FreeBSD is an operating system (OS). The main task of an OS is to abstract from that actual hardware with its own special properties you are using (like CPU, hard disk numbers, size(s) and sectors per track, screen size and colours, keyboard type, etc.) and to provide a) the user (to a lesser extent) and b) applications (see below) with a "generalised", an abstract machine that is the same (more or less) no matter what hardware you are actually using. In general, an OS offers services to the application (e.g. a file system, network, user I/O, etc). The quality of an OS is largely (sp?) defined by the power and flexibility of the services, and by the OS's availability for many platforms (ie. hardware configurations). A programming language is a tool describing - again in an abstract way, using so-called "statements" - how to combine an OS's services into manipulating a set of data (like pictures, user input, whatever) in a way conforming to certain requirements (eg. "I want to do ray tracing with a zillion colours"). There's two types of programming languages: compiled and interpreted. Compiled languages are translated once into (native) machine language to run on a given set of hardware plus OS (the result is called a "program" or "application"), whereas interpreted languages do this translation statement by statement while your "program" is running (in this case, the statements plus the special program translating them are called the "application"). >From your questions I gather that you are actually lookin for an application to perform a task. So, the question actually is: what do you actually want to do? List your requirements, and then ask again. Ah, yes, freebsd-doc is about documentation of and for the FreeBSD project - go to freebsd-questions for this! > My young cousin has been blabbering on about it. very nice of him! > SCOTT KILGOUR -- Michael Schuster To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Apr 21 15:05:32 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id PAA07230 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Tue, 21 Apr 1998 15:05:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk [193.237.89.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA07076 for ; Tue, 21 Apr 1998 22:04:49 GMT (envelope-from nik@nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk) Received: (from nik@localhost) by nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (8.8.8/8.8.8) id WAA20381; Tue, 21 Apr 1998 22:17:59 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from nik) Message-ID: <19980421221759.61026@nothing-going-on.org> Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 22:17:59 +0100 From: Nik Clayton To: "Justin T. If you've got any more questions, can you send 'em via doc@freebsd.org? I have to curtail my typing at the moment due to RSI, and you might get a faster and/or more complete response from someone else before I can get to it. I've cc'd this reply on to -doc in the hope that some kind soul might archive it, clean it up and turn it into DocBook. Or, at the very least, this should help others. >From the ports, make sure you've got textproc/docbook textproc/jade editors/xemacs20 which should (via dependencies) pull in everything else you need as well. You also need John Fieber's DocBook stylesheet, which can be grabbed from Grab this, and extract the contents somewhere. You can also use Norm Walsh's stylesheet (textproc/dsssl-docbook-modular) but I haven't got any notes written up on how to use it yet, and it can be a bit daunting. You need something like this in your .cshrc (or .profile, or whatever) setenv SGML_ROOT /usr/local/share/sgml setenv SGML_CATALOG_FILES ${SGML_ROOT}/docbook/3.0/catalog setenv STML_CATALOG_FILES ${SGML_CATALOG_FILES}:${SGML_ROOT}/html/catalog setenv SGML_CATALOG_FILES ${SGML_CATALOG_FILES}:${SGML_ROOT}/iso8879/catalog setenv SGML_CATALOG_FILES ${SGML_CATALOG_FILES}:${SGML_ROOT}/jade/catalog setenv SGML_CATALOG_FILES ${SGML_CATALOG_FILES}:/usr/local/lib/xemacs-20.3/etc/sgml/CATALOG which sets SGML_CATALOG_FILES to something useful. A catalog file maps SGML DOCTYPE declarations to files in the filesystem. Once you've done this, create your SGML file. My .emacs has this in it: (add-hook 'sgml-mode-hook (function (lambda() (setq sgml-omittag nil) (setq sgml-indent-data t)))) which (with the above env vars) is all you need. Once you've written the SGML, you can convert it to HTML. A command line like jade -c /usr/local/share/sgml/docbook/3.0/catalog \ -c /usr/local/share/sgml/jade/catalog \ -d /path/to/docbook-html.dsl \ -t sgml \ filename.sgml Should do the trick. You don't need the -c flags if you've set the env vars (but it's good practice if you put this in Makefiles) and the -d parameter specifies the path to docbook-html.dsl from John's stylesheets. You'll then have an HTML file which you can use as normal. Try feeding through this process, and it should work with no problems (that file also gives you an (IMHO) reasonable sample of the more immediately useful DocBook elements). This is not the case, as syslog does not get a HUP signal without it being explicitly mentioned in the config file. (I've lost eight days of logs unknowningly because of this change). From reading the source code, at about line 495, this appears to be because of the logic that checks the flags: else if (needroot && !(flags & CE_BINARY)) I do not like the new line that tells me the logs were turned over because the format is not consistent with syslog, so ALL my log files are 'BINARY' and marked with a 'B'. >How-To-Repeat: Remove the pidfile from the config line in /etc/newsyslog.conf and run newsyslog. Your log files will be truncated, but not written to again unless you manually signal syslog. >Fix: at line 130, keep the syslog pid regardless of the status of needroot; (The logic for actually determining the pid in line 130 is redundant, as pid is explicitly set to 0 at line 490) At line 495, Instead of checking whether the logfile is binary, check to make sure we have super-user permissions. The Right Way (tm) to start X or xdm is to put a shell script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d which Does the Deed. It will work, no questions asked. And not even correct. If *xdm* immediately crashes, it will loop a couple times but then init notices something is amiss and stops trying to start it. If your *X server* crashes, xdm restarts it. Whether you started xdm int /etc/ttys or by some other mechanism has nothing to do with it with this behavior. -john To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Apr 23 16:00:03 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA14342 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Thu, 23 Apr 1998 16:00:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA14325; Thu, 23 Apr 1998 16:00:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1998 16:00:01 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199804232300.QAA14325@hub.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-doc Cc: From: Tim Vanderhoek Subject: Re: conf/3590 Reply-To: Tim Vanderhoek Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The following reply was made to PR conf/3590; it has been noted by GNATS. There may be conflict between getty and xdm. On which vty are you running xdm? AFAIK, there are four ways to start xdm and avoid conflicts with getty. 1. Specify xdm in /etc/ttys. If you want to run xdm in ttyv3, you write: ttyv3 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure 2. Run xdm from /etc/rc.local (or other rc* files). if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ]; then (sleep 10; /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm) & fi It is essential to add "sleep N" for proper operation. You may need to experient in order to find an appropriate value for N in your configuration. 3. Another way to run xdm from /etc/rc.local (or other rc* files). if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ]; then /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm fi You need to explicitly specify a vty in which to run the X server by modifying /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xserver. :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X vt4 The above example will run the X server in ttyv3. Note that the X server counts vtys as vt1, vt2, vt3..., whereas FreeBSD uses the notation ttyv0, ttyv1, ttyv2,... 4. Specify the X server in /etc/ttys. ttyv3 "/usr/X11R6/bin/X vt4 -query localhost" xterm on secure _Remove_ the X server from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xserver. _Add_ localhost to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xaccess. Start xdm from /etc/rc* as: if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ]; then /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm fi Hope this will give you some ideas. It will work, no questions >asked. I have something similar to this: I picked up /etc/rc.local simply because it was what the original poster was using. I don't care which rc script you would prefer to use for this purpose. >#!/bin/sh >if [ -r /noxdm ] ; then > echo -n " (xdm disabled)" >else > [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ] && /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm && echo -n " xdm" >fi > >in /usr/local/etc/rc.d/xdm.sh. > >If you're picky about the execution order of /usr/local/etc/rc.d/*, >use a numeric prefix for each script, as in /etc/periodic/*. Umm, I am puzzled. I don't see why this particular version should solve the original poster's problem. We are talking about possible conflict between getty and xdm. We usually turn on getty on some vtys, say ttyv0 through ttyv2. When xdm is started from /etc/rc.local (or /usr/local/etc/rc.d/something), getty has not yet been started. Therefore, ttyv1 through ttyv2 are not in use and is available. If getty is not yet running when xdm tries to start the X server, the X server will pick up the first available vty, in this case ttyv1. Then, init starts getty on ttyv1 and you get two programs, the X server and getty, trying to read the keyboard in ttyv1... This is a timing problem. If getty has been started in ttyv1 through ttyv2 BEFORE xdm starts the X server, the X server will see ttyv3 is available and will use it, then you have no conflict. That's why I suggested to put `sleep N' before starting xdm from rc.local (or whichever rc script) so that getty will run before the X server, or explicitly specify a vty in which to run the X server. He was saying than it was not good for browser interpretation of the HTML page. I was explaning why a sentence with 30 words where not good: the human is an animal who normaly read book. Open any book, there is no more than 8-14 words for each sentence. Most of the professionnal page are made with a WIDTH=600 Like www.sun.com www.intel.com
www.linux.org
www.news.com
www.zdnet.com www.wired.com ok, I can give you a lot if you want ;-) So I suggest than freebsd.org will be re-made with that rule of width=600. It's also nice if all of the lines are approximately the same length :-) > Most of the professionnal page are made with a WIDTH=600 Well, IMHO it is not up to a web page to force screen width at all, and certainly not simply to stay in keeping with some trendy habit. One of the advantages of HTML is that it is platform independent and device independent. Any attempted width restriction is inappropriate. Several of my friends have windows only 30 characters wide because their eyesight requires very large text. If you believe the radio today, soon we'll be using our wrist watches to read web pages :-) HTML simply describes the structure of the content. It is up to the recipient to decide how that content can be displayed on their equipment. Yes, thanks, I already know I have extreme views on this :-) So do the standards. It is up to each person to first understand exactly what it is that they are producing, and then identify any rules they can justify bending for a particular purpose. Do that and there should be no problem. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message
