There is no such thing as a stupid question :) First of all, you sent this to the wrong list. You should have mailed your question to either questions@freebsd.org or newbies@freebsd.org. This list is only intended for people who are actively maintaining the documentation (and questions related to the documentation per se) Second, you should tell us what medium you are trying to install from. Do you have a FreeBSD CD-ROM set, or are you installing over the net? You shouldn't try the latter unless you have a fast connection (T1 or better). Third, what you need to do is copy the boot floppy image onto a formatted 1.44MB floppy. Instructions can be found in the section on installation in the FreeBSD handbook, which is available on web: -- Noone else has a .sig like this one. How is that dealt with? Reasoned discussion on the mailing list :-) To the best of my knowledge, nothing like that's actually happened. You can rest assured that should I ever see Updated all the pages to be in one big table so we can force the width to be 540 pixels. float by in a commit message, I'll be one of the first people politely asking for it be reversed. That said, there's no reason why a few different sets of pages couldn't be produced. By changing the contents of includes.sgml it would be quite easy to redefine the 'header' and 'footer' entities to wrap pages in tables. The HTML generated from this could go in one place, the existing HTML in another, and let visitors to the site take their pick. N -- *DON'T DO THIS*. No. I managed to spend about three evenings working on the LinuxDoc -> Docbook migration, and then got sidetracked by the swift and sudden onset of RSI -- this effectively took me off the keyboard for 4 or so weeks, and cut down the amount of typing I could do for another 3. The amount of typing I can do is picking up again, and I fully expect to get back to the migration on Thursday (other evening commitments earlier this week). Here, its the Documentation list. Can you explain us why you choosed freebsd-doc before freebsd-questions? Second: FreeBSD do not currently support FAT32. There is a patch from NetBSD/OpenBSD but its really beta. Maybe soon, with the Win98 who use FAT32... So for now, FreeBSD do not support it. Well there's more than one person here lurking in the shadows. :) The address you want is freebsd-doc@freebsd.org. > just noticed in FreeBSD's standard FIND(1) manual, it lists > the fact that + and - can be used as operators on numeric arguments at the > END of the list of options, not at the top in the manual. it would be > much easier from a 'new person' perspective to have it at the top where it > starts to list all the options you could use with find. With a feature that has very few or relatively few options most man pages make an effort to list the possible combinations in the "Synopsis" section at the top of the page. The problem with a command like find is that there are so many possible combinations of arguments that you could fill up a man page just listing them all. I do agree with you however that the discussion about modifying numerical arguments should come closer to the section where numerical arguments are first discussed. If it's of any comfort to you it took me quite a while to put two and two together on that and I am an experienced unix user. :) > this might seem like a whine, however i'm simply looking at it from a > newbie perspective. it makes sense to make documentation easier to use as > the project as a whole evolves, no matter how small the change might be. You are absolutely correct on that, and it's one of the emphases that I and several other people involved in documentation have. If no one else gets to it first I will try to hack something together in the next couple days. I've noticed that the copy of the handbook and FAQ that is up on the FreeBSD FTP site is a lot older then that which is on the WWW site for people to look at. Trouble is, it's inconvenient for us with dialup connections to have to read such documents online, as there is a lot of information on them. Would you please consider updating the FTP site more often. Thanks! P.S. I'm not on this list, so please send and comments directly back to me.
