As it currently stands, the DSSSL stylesheet for DocBook that we're currently using will break the documentation into different HTML files for chapters, sections and so on. By default, it uses a numbering scheme, so sect01.html, sect02.html, and so on. If your sections, chapters and so forth include the 'id' attribute like so FreeBSD in a Nutshell ... then the stylesheet will instead name this file "nutshell.html", *if* you customise the stylesheet and add the lines (define %use-id-as-filename% ;; Use ID attributes as name for component HTML files? #t) I've done this to the current doc/sgml/freebsd.dsl file, which is why the current snapshot of the DocBook Handbook at has files like "bibliography01.html", "bibliography02.html" and so on. Note that chapters, sections and so on that do not have an ID attribute are named with a numbering scheme, hence the existance of "c09.html", "c12.html" and so on. Hopefully this will be fixed in a later release. + + I get a ``panic: cant mount root'' error when rebooting the system after installation. + +

This error comes from confusion between the boot block's and the + kernel's understanding of the disk devices. The error usually + manifests on two-disk IDE systems, with the hard disks arranged as the + master or single device on separate IDE controllers, with FreeBSD + installed on the secondary IDE controller. The boot blocks think + the system is installed on wd1 (the second BIOS disk) while the kernel + assigns the first disk on the secondary controller device wd2. After + the device probing, the kernel tries to mount what the boot blocks + think is the boot disk, wd1, while it is really wd2, and fails. + +

To fix the problem, do one of the following: + + + At the Boot: prompt, enter + 1:wd(0,a)/kernel and press Enter. But it isn't there. - the man page for amd refers you to a document called "Amd - The 4.4 BSD Automounter" but it doesn't tell you where to find it. I finally found it in the /usr/share/info directory. - neither the man page, nor the amd manual in /usr/share/info makes any mention of the "resvport" option. I spent a long time trying to figure out why amd mount-maps which worked fine on other platforms were not working properly on FreeBSD. Finally, someone mentioned to me that the "resvport" option was needed for FreeBSD clients but I never could have figured that out on my own. >How-To-Repeat: see above. >Fix: Perhaps the "CAVEATS" portion of the amd manual page could mention the "resvport" option to save people from the trouble I went through. Also, update the manual page to include the location of the amd manual in /usr/share/info. Finally, remove mention of the amd documentation in /usr/share/doc/smm/contents.ascii.gz or put a pointer in 13.amd pointing people at the /usr/share/info directory. >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Jul 22 03:10:47 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA27606 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 03:10:47 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id DAA27590 for ; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 03:10:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.5) id DAA17012; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 03:10:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from nobody@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA27234; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 03:06:58 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nobody) Message-Id: <199807221006.DAA27234@hub.freebsd.org> Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 03:06:58 -0700 (PDT) From: dmorrisn@u.washington.edu To: freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.ORG X-Send-Pr-Version: www-1.0 Subject: docs/7364: typo: 'warranty' misspelled in http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/consulting.html Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >Number: 7364 >Category: docs >Synopsis: typo: 'warranty' misspelled in http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/consulting.html >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Wed Jul 22 03:10:01 PDT 1998 >Last-Modified: >Originator: Don Morrison >Organization: >Release: not relevant >Environment: not relevant >Description: 'warranty' is misspelled in the last entry at the bottom of: http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/consulting.html >How-To-Repeat: go to: http://www.freebsd.org/commercial/consulting.html >Fix: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Jul 22 04:45:38 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id EAA14353 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 04:45:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (root@mail.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id EAA14319; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 04:44:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@cs.tu-berlin.de) Received: from freno.cs.tu-berlin.de (wosch@freno.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.167]) by mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id NAA27270; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:37:17 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by freno.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.0) id NAA19799; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:36:58 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19980722133657.A19749@cs.tu-berlin.de> Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:36:57 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: New structure of the Web Server and documentation Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.1i Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org There are more and more translations (japanese, spanish, etc.) of the FreeBSD documentation. Not sure. 'alpha' (and the Sparc port) are certainly a part of FreeBSD, with their code in the core CVS repository, I wouldn't like people to get the impression that they're just projects. 'docproj' possibly, although again, I'm not sure there's a particularly compelling reason. On a related note, do you see the website as a part of the FreeBSD Documentation Project? English version is original. 2. We (Japanese doc team) assume that English version of Web files are placed at one level higher than Japanese WWW files. Since English version of WWW contains many many files, we cannot translate all of them. For example, www/data/releases/index.html This file contains a link to www/data/releases/2.0R/notes.html. www/data/ja_JP.EUC/releases/index.html This file should contain a link to www/data/ja_JP.EUC/releases/2.0R/notes.html, but we have no plan to translate releases/2.0R/*. So this file contains a link to www/data/releases/2.0R/notes.html (English version). --- Motoyuki Konno @ FreeBSD Japanese Documentation Project To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Jul 22 09:30:25 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id JAA02556 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 09:30:25 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (root@mail.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id JAA02415 for ; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 09:30:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@cs.tu-berlin.de) Received: from caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de (wosch@caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.12]) by mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id SAA29059; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 18:20:28 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.0) id SAA29334; Wed, 22 Jul 1998 18:20:26 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19980722182025.A28671@cs.tu-berlin.de> Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 18:20:25 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: nik@iii.co.uk Cc: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: New structure of the Web Server and documentation References: <19980722133657.A19749@cs.tu-berlin.de> <19980722160754.07406@iii.co.uk> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.1i In-Reply-To: <19980722160754.07406@iii.co.uk>; from nik@iii.co.uk on Wed, Jul 22, 1998 at 04:07:54PM +0100 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On 1998-07-22 16:07:54 +0100, nik@iii.co.uk wrote: > On a related note, do you see the website as a part of the FreeBSD > Documentation Project? I you could send > me some handbook to learn how to install and configure FreeBSD I will > be really very greatful to you. There is no ``official'' printed copy of the handbook and FAQ. You have a couple of choices if you want to read something before installation: a) Buy "The Complete FreeBSD" book+CD set by Greg Lehey, published by Walnut Creek CDROM. I'm not sure if this book+CD set is available in Pune (or Bombay) readily. It is hard to get in B'lore. b) Get hold of a FreeBSD 2.2.6 CD set. One of the CD's has (older) copies of the handbook and FAQ. Browse this online and/or print it out. { The CD set is recommended even otherwise as the 4 CDs are full of useful stuff }. c) Download the PS or PDF version of the current Handbook and print it out. If you just want information on installing FreeBSD, neither the FAQ or Handbook are strictly necessary. Just boot the boot floppy, select Novice Install and answer the questions. There is sufficient information about the installation process on the boot floppy itself and you can always redo the install if you made a mistake somewhere.
