To be precise, it's long enough that if I type '?' at the boot prompt to list files in the root directory, half the file listing disappears off the top of the screen. I see two solutions: a) shorten boot.help (this means cutting down on the examples) b) don't show boot.help more than once unless the user requests it (and add a command to print boot.help) DES -- Dag-Erling Smørgrav - dag-erli@ifi.uio.no To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Sep 13 12:40:07 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA19577 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:40:07 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.FreeBSD.ORG [204.216.27.21]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA19552 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:40:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.5) id MAA21196; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:40:02 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ma3.seikyou.ne.jp (ma3.seikyou.ne.jp [202.211.152.179]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA18639 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:34:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from hiloshi@seikyou.ne.jp) Received: from hiloshi.seikyou.ne.jp (kyoto-467.seikyou.ne.jp [202.211.148.22]) by ma3.seikyou.ne.jp (8.8.8/3.6WNSK98032401) with ESMTP id EAA13584; Mon, 14 Sep 1998 04:34:34 +0900 Received: (from hiloshi@localhost) by hiloshi.seikyou.ne.jp (8.8.5/3.5Wpl7) id EAA00441; Mon, 14 Sep 1998 04:35:42 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <199809131935.EAA00441@hiloshi.seikyou.ne.jp> Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 04:35:42 +0900 (JST) From: Kaneda Hiloshi Reply-To: vanitas@ma3.seikyou.ne.jp To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.ORG Cc: vanitas@ma3.seikyou.ne.jp X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.2 Subject: docs/7922: typos in bc.1 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org >Number: 7922 >Category: docs >Synopsis: man 1 bc >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: low >Responsible: freebsd-doc >State: open >Quarter: >Keywords: >Date-Required: >Class: doc-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Sun Sep 13 12:40:02 PDT 1998 >Last-Modified: >Originator: Kaneda Hiloshi >Organization: jpman project, Japan FreeBSD users group. >Release: FreeBSD 2.2.1-RELEASE i386 >Environment: 3.0-19980827-SNAP bc 1 .\" "Command Manual" v1.04 "June 22, 1995" >Description: manpage bc.1 has two same typos: line 332: "the the" -> "to the" line 351: "the the" -> "to the" >How-To-Repeat: man 1 bc >Fix: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Sep 13 14:24:44 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA04831 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:24:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (mail.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.13]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA04783; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 14:24:14 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wosch@cs.tu-berlin.de) Received: from caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de (wosch@caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de [130.149.17.12]) by mail.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id XAA14720; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:21:03 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from wosch@localhost) by caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de (8.9.1/8.9.0) id XAA28072; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:20:57 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19980913232056.A28003@caramba.cs.tu-berlin.de> Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 23:20:56 +0200 From: Wolfram Schneider To: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Converting ppp and ddwg tutorials to docbook Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org How hard would it be to convert the tutorials ppp and ddwg from linuxdoc doc docbook? Under FreeBSD-2.2.6R, I could use only one of these two devices - the system would only acknowlege one of them. With the "atapi.c" patch from Satoh Junichi, FBSD-2.2.6R now recognizes and accepts both the Atapi CD-ROM and the Atapi ZIP drives. Using the ZIP drive was a little bit of a mystery. Starting with the FBSD FAQ item#8.4 (I have a new removable drive, how to I use it?), I wound up with the following, with regards to an ATAPI ZIP drive instead of the SCSI ZIP drive in the FAQ: - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - For an MS-DOS device (where the ZIP media is MS-DOS preformatted, and the "/zip" directory is already defined): mount -t msdos /dev/wfd0 /zip Normal MS-DOS caveats apply: whilst the ZIP media is accessible via normal Unix commands, all file/directory names are truncated to MS-DOS standards. For a UNIX device (again, "/zip" already exists): /etc/disktab: zip100|zip 100:\ :ty=removable:se#512:nc#96:nt#64:ns#32:\ :pa#196608:oa#0:ba#4096:fa#512:ta=4.2BSD:\ :pb#196608:ob#0:bb#4096:fb#512:tb=4.2BSD:\ :pc#196608:oc#0:bc#4096:fc#512:tc=4.2BSD: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rwfd0 disklabel -r -w wfd0c zip100 zip1 newfs -T zip100 wfd0c mount /dev/wfd0c /zip - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Comments: 1) the "zip100" entry in "/etc/disktab" already existed; all that was changed was to add the type flags ("ta=4.2BSD", etc.). 2) I don't know offhand if all three disktab partition definitions are really necessary (perhaps they are, perhaps they aren't); FDISK will report FOUR partitions. I would suspect that only ONE partition is required ("pc" ?). 3) the original FAQ entry suggestion of using dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/.... count=2 did not appear to prepare enough of the disk, and NEWFS attempts would report "not enough disk space" (or "out of disk space"). I don't know if it is really necessary to "format" the entire ZIP "disk", but I did. 4) the original FAQ entry suggestion of using disklabel -Brw ... auto didn't work as "/usr/mdec/wfdboot" doesn't exist. Perhaps including "-b boot1" would have resolved this? Also, the "auto" parameter was not able to recognize the "media (disk) type". 4) leaving the media MS-DOS formatted appeared to offer more free/available space (as reported by DF), by about 10MB (?) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Stats from various commands: ...../root: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rwfd0 dd: /dev/rwfd0: end of device 196609+0 records in 196608+0 records out 100663296 bytes transferred in 4030.920802 secs (24973 bytes/sec) ...../root: disklabel wfd0 # /dev/rwfd0c: type: unknown disk: zip100 label: zip1 flags: removeable bytes/sector: 512 sectors/track: 32 tracks/cylinder: 64 sectors/cylinder: 2048 cylinders: 96 sectors/unit: 196608 rpm: 3600 interleave: 1 trackskew: 0 cylinderskew: 0 headswitch: 0 # milliseconds track-to-track seek: 0 # milliseconds drivedata: 0 3 partitions: # size offset fstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] a: 196607 0 4.2BSD 512 4096 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 95*) b: 196607 0 4.2BSD 512 4096 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 95*) c: 196607 0 4.2BSD 512 4096 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 95*) ...../root: newfs -T zip100 wfd0c Warning: Block size and bytes per inode restrict cylinders per group to 5. /dev/rwfd0c: 196608 sectors in 48 cylinders of 1 tracks, 4096 sectors 96.0MB in 10 cyl groups (5 c/g, 10.00MB/g, 4448 i/g) super-block backups (for fsck -b #) at: 32, 20512, 40992, 61472, 81952, 102432, 122912, 143392, 163872, 184352, ...../root: df -k /zip Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/wfd0c 92607 0 85198 0% /zip ...../root: dmesg [..] Sep 14 ... /kernel: wdc1 at 0x170-0x177 irq 15 on isa Sep 14 ... /kernel: wdc1: unit 0 (atapi): , removable, accel, ovlap, dma, iordis Sep 14 ... /kernel: wcd0: 5512Kb/sec, 256Kb cache, audio play, 255 volume levels, ejectable tray Sep 14 ... /kernel: wcd0: no disc inside, unlocked Sep 14 ... /kernel: wdc1: unit 1 (atapi): , removable, intr, iordis Sep 14 ... /kernel: wfd0: medium type unknown (no disk) Sep 14 ... /kernel: wfd0: buggy Zip drive, 64-block transfer limit set Sep 14 ... /kernel: sb0 at 0x220 irq 5 drq 1 on isa [...] To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Sep 15 17:15:11 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA13826 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 17:15:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from rose.garden.sierra.com (machines.sierra.com [209.67.71.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA13543 for ; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 17:13:18 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from philip.hallstrom@cendantsoft.com) Received: from localhost (philip@localhost) by rose.garden.sierra.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id RAA16532 for ; Tue, 15 Sep 1998 17:12:52 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 17:12:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Philip Hallstrom X-Sender: philip@rose To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Kudos! It could be that just one step failed during the install, but that you can copy /kernel.GENERIC to /kernel after the system boots. 3. Please don't send these things to freebsd-doc; this is a mailing list for discussing the documentation, not doing tech support. Maybe try freebsd-hardware next time. That drive will work just fine under FreeBSD as-is. It will be seen just as any other removable-media SCSI device. Using it in parallel-port mode is a different story and requires that a driver be compiled into the kernel, which does exist in -current (and maybe -stable). Beware that FreeBSD will spew some error messages while probing it at boot and when you start to use a freshly inserted disk, but they are harmless and everything works fine anyway. -- Chris Dillon - cdillon@wolves.k12.mo.us - cdillon@inter-linc.net /* FreeBSD: The fastest and most stable server OS on the planet. SNN Interviews NuOncology Management NuOncology Labs Inc. Symbol: NLAB - OTC Bulletin Board We apologize for not getting this letter out over the weekend but there is a lot going on with this company - for instance, only today SNN received a request to be kept updated about NuLab's progress, from an Asian based pharmaceutical concern. SNN met with the Senior Management of NuOncology Labs Inc. (NuLabs) on September 10, 1998, at the offices of their investment relations firm, Investor Communication Company (ICC), in Washington, D.C. SNN met with Mr. Robert S. Thomas, Chairman and President, Mr. Philip F. Enlow, Executive Vice President and Mr. Joe Kane a financial consultant to NuOncology Labs Inc. As you can appreciate in a meeting such as this, there are legal and regulatory restrictions on what information can be shared with SNN and our readers, but from the information we did receive there is no doubt this company is making significant progress. We received confirmation that the doctors at the Baker-Sanger Laboratory in Houston, Texas are in the final phases of testing and validating Arglabin and determining its method of action. We also learned that one of the original doctors from Kazakstan is in Houston and assisting in this process. The completion of these tests will be followed by the publishing of a paper, in a recognized medical journal, discussing the findings of NuLab's research team. This paper will be co-authored by at least four physicians with extensive experience and credentials in oncological research, including Dr. R. Michael Williams, NuLab's Medical Director and Chief Scientific Officer. Our impression was that this paper would be completed very soon and if the demeanor of the people we met with is any indication, the results are what NuLab and their shareholders want to see - our feeling is that Arglabin is an FTI. SNN will immediately publish a synopsis of the paper when it is available. We also gained an appreciation of how far ahead of other biopharmaceutical companies NuOncology is at the present time. To the best of SNN's knowledge no one has published information on clinical (human) trials of FTI's. NuLab, on the other hand, has all of the clinical results from the Institute of Phytochemistry, in Kazakstan, for the treatment of over 200 patients with various types of cancers. In addition, on a visit to take place between October 19-29, 1998, further results will be available from clinical trials involving 40 liver cancer and 60 breast cancer patients. These tests have been conducted so as to conform to the international protocols for medical research and should help to add credence to the effectiveness of Arglabin. For this reason alone, NuLabs could be 1-2 years ahead of their many industry competitors who are trying to develop FTI's. (There are at least 8 major pharmaceutical companies conducting research in this area.) We were also pleased to confirm that the patents for the lead compound, Arglabin, and the broader patents for its related and derivative compounds are held in the United States and controlled by NuOncology Labs Inc. One of the key questions to our readers is "What is all this worth?" The best answer SNN could come up with was by making an analogy to another cancer treatment, Taxol, that seems to work in a similar way to Arglabin. Taxol is a $1 billion a year drug today. It has one serious problem in that it is highly toxic. Arglabin, conversely, has minimal toxic side effects and in clinical trials appears to work as well and in some cases better than Taxol, depending on the type of cancer being treated. Assuming that the clinical trials continue to confirm Arglabin's efficacy as a cancer treatment, one way of looking at the valuation of Arglabin would be as a less toxic Taxol. This could easily lead to Arglabin becoming the treatment of choice and thereby giving it a value at least equal to Taxol. In our next letter we will discuss a number of other developments underway in the predictive and chemosensitivity testing areas of NuOncology's business. SNN wishes to thank the management of NuOncology Labs Inc. for taking the time for this meeting and providing ourselves and our readers with these insights into their company and their business. SNN continues to feel very bullish about this company and encourage our readers to closely follow this rapidly developing situation. We believe the shares of NuOncology Labs Inc. (NLAB) to be very attractive at prices up to $10. 2. Market Commentary If the market rally can be credited to the strong hints of an interest rate cut late last week and yesterday, and the slide in the market in the middle of last week can be blamed on Mr. Clinton's personal problems then this market is not in bad shape and is likely to move higher. We believe that Mr. Greenspan's guidance of the economy is key to how the U.S. economic future will unfold. In fact, the future of a number of large Asian and South American economies are dependent on his guidance. The "doom and gloom" crowd project the present set of trends and parameters into the future and get a self fulfilling prophecy of economic disaster. This is where we differ from those that are predicting a more negative outlook - we do not assume the monetary authorities of the major economic powers are going to do nothing. SNN believes that the position that is now being taken by the Fed in the U.S. is that America will have to try and ward off a global recession by initially lowering interest rates and thereby encouraging domestic growth. They will also lend enough money, through the IMF, to reflate many of the world's troubled economies. This scenario is only possible because the US economy is strong, unemployment is low, interest rates are at historic lows (and probably heading lower), there is no apparent inflationary pressures, and there is no external threat to the U.S.. Mr. Clinton is less than 2 months away from what most pundits will soon be referring to as the "lame duck" period of his Presidency. Although we do not think it likely that he will be impeached, if it does occur, we do not think it will be a factor in the economic equation. The bottom line is that the U.S. will need to be the engine to keep many of the world's economies afloat and resuming the type of growth they have shown in the past. For this reason SNN believes that the future for the U.S. economy and stock market is positive and there will continue to be opportunities to profit for the savvy investor. 3. One thing I've found, and have found annoyong, over the last while or so is the list of mirror sites in the handbook doesn't always match reality... Take, for example, the list of Australian mirrors in the handbook... there is a list of 4 (which I know is incorrect, because my mirror is ftp7.au.freebsd.org, and isn't listed) and it seems that ftp5 and ftp6 are also available and upto date so should be listed also. So, and I don't think this'll be to hard, would this sort of scheme help people out. I build up a database of sites that reckon they are mirror sites (which is really easy as I just have to go through the DNS and look in each sub-domain for hosts starting with ftp) and maybe once a day or so do a quick check to see if the server contains certain files and directories (i.e. a mirror MUST contain 2.2.7-RELEASE and maybe the tools directory or whatever list of stuff we come up with) or the database could contain info on what releases they hold (I've seen people on the mailing lists ask where that can get files from an old release, this'll tell them). Phew, so there would be two possible, and possibly coexisting, outcomes to the project 1) A list of sites that contain a minumum set of stuff, and/or 2) A list of sites and the releases that they currently hold. The database could then be used to authomatically build the mirrors list in the handbook. Thoughts? I'm not on -doc yet, so please cc me with ideas. I would like to work with others to create a document that knits together all docs that relate to either converting or adding FreeBSD to a Windoze9x machine. There are some wonderful writings in your series. A potential problem is there is a large number of docs, a number that might dissuade those feed the milk of 9x from graduating to a more robust OS. Certainly some might argue this is coddling those who need to get out there and hit the man pages, but I think with more 'hand-holding' we can do more to bring acceptance to full-featured OS's like FreeBSD. UNIX does not come easy to new people. I think it would be good to make the first experience of installing the OS as effortless as possible. "Upgrading from MS-Window to FreeBSD (as server or workstation)" sounds like a good title/topic. Be sure to cover how to get Samba up and running, too. I don't have time to actually do the writing (I don't run any Windows at the moment, anyway, so I'd have a hard time), but I can do review of the document. Eivind. Any volunteers? I hope it's not considered gauche for me to write my own copy. :) I don't know what the "Really Quick Newsletter(tm)" is, but here's something in "newsflash" style: 17-September-98 A new solution is added to the sysutils section of the ports collection for dealing with the often complex problems of merging the configuration and other text files associated with a "make world" upgrade. The mergemaster script uses /usr/src/etc/Makefile to create a temporary root environment with the new files, then compares them to the installed versions. The heavily commented Bourne shell script should be fairly easy to understand, and offers many command-line and runtime options for dealing with the merge process. That may be longer than you're looking for, so feel free to tighten it up a bit.
