Please send questions to FreeBSD-questions, not FreeBSD-doc. I don't know if the system has been down, but it certainly isn't at the moment. I have just managed to install freeBSD 3.0. and now I plan to spend time to understand it ! The installation first did not work though, and I think this comes from the installation manual... I downloaded the files on my hard drive, under windows, but the install program could not find the ports I downloaded. That surprised me since I respected the instructions (found in the handbook and INSTALL.TXT): my files were on the primary partition, under directory C:\FREEBSD\ After trying (under DOS) to change the case of my directory names, I decided to put the files directly C:\ (that is, I moved C:\FREEBSD\bin I in C:\bin) And that worked ! I don't know if I missunderstood something or if the help files are not up to date, but I thought I could let you know ! The short answer is that, yes, FreeBSD comes with a shadow password system. However, this is a good point: either the handbook or FAQ should probably say something about this. Is the following a good start? ================================================================ Passwords 1. How do passwords work? FreeBSD uses a "shadow password" system. There is an /etc/passwd file, as UNIX systems have always had, but it doesn't contain the actual passwords. Those are kept in /etc/master.passwd (and in a hashed database /etc/spwd.db). 2. So do I need to edit these files to change my password? No. Normally, the easiest way to do that is with the 'passwd' command. 3. Editing password files Password files have more in them than just passwords. As an ordinary user, the 'chpass' command should be all you need as far as changing your entry, but for system administration purposes you need a lot more. Do *not* just edit the password files themselves. The easiest way to make your modifications is to use the 'vipw' command, which will bring up the password file in an editor, and automatically build the databases for you when you're done editing. If you *do* edit the master.passwd file directly, make sure to run the pwd_mkdb program on it afterwards. 4. Other topics [Not covered here, and probably shouldn't be: NIS, Kerberos, login.conf...] 5. More Reading To administrate a system, you really ought to read the following manual pages: passwd(1) : actually, *everyone* ought to read this chpass(1) : lets users change some other information as well as the password vipw(8) : edit the password file passwd(5) : format of the password file. If others on the list haven't visited yet, do take a look. It feels just right as a technical document: it's not overly austere, yet not too informal, either. You've followed the rule of having text after every heading---something many software engineers don't understand. And you clearly know your way around Docbook. Would you also post the SGML source? That might help other people approach the DTD and start developing more documents. Some comments from my compulsive editing habits: ** In the Customizations section, check spelling of "dependant." ** In Increasing the number of lines/Just do it, refer to the figures directly, if you're going to use formal figures. If you're saying "the following...", then use informal, unnumbered figures. Both of these sections bring up an issue: maybe /etc/rc.i386 should set up these properties for all the vtys? In /etc/rc.conf, you can set the video mode, character size, and mouse properties, but they apply only to ttyv0. There might be a software fix for this, in this case. ** In Moving /tmp to Memory, another benefit of using MFS is the system performs better when you have processes using memory-mapped files in /tmp; changes to the memory-mapped file don't have to be backed out onto disk, since the file itself lives in a memory filesystem. Anyway, well done! Okay, so who's going to add a link to this document from the FreeBSD web pages? --Sean To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Thu Oct 22 12:34:32 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA15325 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 12:34:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from drmemory.fnal.gov (drmemory.fnal.gov [131.225.105.170]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA15317 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 12:34:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rneswold@drmemory.fnal.gov) Received: (from rneswold@localhost) by drmemory.fnal.gov (8.8.8/8.8.6) id OAA01229; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 14:33:18 -0500 (CDT) Message-ID: <19981022143317.A1149@drmemory.fnal.gov> Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 14:33:17 -0500 From: "Richard M. Thanks for pointing it out... > ** In Increasing the number of lines/Just do it, refer to the figures > directly, if you're going to use formal figures. If you're saying "the > following...", then use informal, unnumbered figures. This is due to my inexperience in SGML. I tried to directly refer to the figure, but I couldn't get SGML to generate the appropriate text. Maybe there's a more recent DocBook or some DocBook documentation that explains it better... > ** In Moving /tmp to Memory, another benefit of using MFS is the system > performs better when you have processes using memory-mapped files in > /tmp; changes to the memory-mapped file don't have to be backed out onto > disk, since the file itself lives in a memory filesystem.
