Yes. They're generally under a FreeBSD style copyright. > 2) Is it a good copyright notice? Not really, no. It doesn't answer whether I can use it (read it) when working with my company stuff, for instance. FreeBSD generally tries very hard to be commercial use friendly - look at any of the source files that are not in gnu/ for our preferred copyright style (minus the advertisement clause that you find in some of these). A very good example is at http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/freebsd-license.html - see the parent (http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/) for more details etc. > 3) Do I need such a copyright notice? You should have _some_ sort of copyright/license statement, to let people know what they are allowed to do. Eivind. It's generally better to do your upgrades from the installation floppy of the version you're trying to upgrade to since otherwise you're using the older upgrade tool bits to upgrade with and won't get the benefit of any fixes we've made to the upgrade process. Not much I can do about it now though. :( - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Mon Dec 7 03:24:40 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id DAA16495 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Mon, 7 Dec 1998 03:24:40 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from usr11-dialup6.Atlanta.compuserve.com (usr48-dialup11.mix2.Atlanta.cw.net [166.55.62.203]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id DAA16490; Mon, 7 Dec 1998 03:24:35 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from asa@aol.com) From: asa@aol.com Message-Id: <199812071124.DAA16490@hub.freebsd.org> Subject: toner Supplies Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 02:58:55 To: undisclosed-recipients:; Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org BENCHMARK PRINT SUPPLY 1091 REDSTONE LANE ATLANTA GA 30338 CALL----> 770-399-0953 FOR TONER SUPPLIES ORDERS/PRICING ONLY CALL----> 770-399-5505 CUSTOMER SERVICE/SUPPORT ISSUES CALL----> 770-399-5614 E-MAIL REMOVAL COMPLAINTS LINE OUR LASER PRINTER/FAX/COPIER TONER CARTRIDGE PRICES NOW AS LOW AS $39 & UP. We feel this company has a strong business plan in the environmental technology business. THE BUSINESS: COMGEN has developed a highly efficient process for converting waste oils, of all types, into diesel fuel. The importance of finding an economical solution to the problem of waste oil cannot be over emphasized because of the devastating impact oil can have on the fresh water supply. One gallon of oil can pollute 1,000,000 gallons of fresh water and 25% of waste oil being generated into the world today is now being illegally dumped into the environment. The principals of the company have refined this technology over the past 15 years to the point that they can economically operate their system and show a profit, without government subsidies or grants. In the past this type of technology could only be profitable with government assistance which usually took the form of tax breaks or outright grants. This has been the case in almost all areas of recycling to date. BUSINESS STRATEGY: Dr. Roy Jefferies and Mr. Peter Rzazewski, the companies co-founders, have vended the rights to exploit this technology into a US public company, COMGEN CORP. Their purpose in going public now is to raise capital, which will allow them to expand sales of the COMGEN technology, but also to allow COMGEN to participate in Joint Ventures of the operating side of the business. Rather than simply selling, installing and servicing these operations they want to participate in the downstream cash flow and profits which they have seen their customers enjoy. In this way they hope to gain a form of royalty from the technology. As an example, in Poland they have seen their primary customer go from a one man operation, with limited resources (as a result of which they virtually financed him into his first operation) to a position today where he has eight installations throughout Poland and he recently chartered a jet to take 42 of his key employees for a one week all expense paid vacation in Cyprus. A significant portion of the equity that COMGEN will put into each Joint Venture will come from their profit margin on equipment sales. The Joint Venture strategy is important because it will provide a number of strengths to the enterprise: The operating partner will be "hands on" at the local level and they will have a significant financial investment to protect. The J.V. partner will have local access to feedstock (used oil) for the plant. They will have a collection system in the form of a truck fleet and storage facilities for the used oil, and ideally, they will have sufficient additional zoned land to construct the COMGEN refining system. The playback on COMGEN's investment in these J.V.'s is projected to be between 2-5 years depending on the amount of government subsidization (if any) that is available. SIZE OF MARKET: Messrs. Rzazewski and Jefferies have been involved in the installation of 70 of these plants worldwide. Over the past three years they have sold, manufactured and installed 19 plants in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. They have not touched the environmentally sensitive markets in North America or Western Europe. The US generates 1.5 Billion gallons of waste oil each year and it would take over 600 systems to recycle this oil alone. Discussions have commenced with various parties in regard to developing this market. COMGEN also has written expressions of interest from multi-national corporations in the Middle East/India market and Asia, in regard to both manufacturing and operating these systems on a Joint Venture basis. As these discussions progress we will update our subscribers. There are other opportunities that are being developed in the area of co-generation of electricity from diesel powered generators. SUMMARY: This is a brand new company with a proven technology that is poised to grow rapidly. The stock has performed extremely positively to date, no doubt as a result of the rumors of this impending deal. Although this can be a slow time in the market, it may provide an opportunity to pick up the stock prior to the January - February period which traditionally sees some of the largest upside moves of the year. I started working on this, and wrote some code which I mailed to Wolfram and Satoshi -- I appear to have lost it, so I've cc'd them on this message in the hope that's they hung on to it. Basically, it implemented two objects. FreeBSD::Port was an individual port. You created it calling the new() method, passing it one line from the ports INDEX file. The object read this in and set its internal state. It then provided methods to get this info back. There were also two methods that returned a multi-line string of information, one as text, the other as HTML. The second object was tied hash. You passed it the filename to the INDEX file and it went and created all the ::Port objects as necessary. The hash key was the name of the port. So you'd write code like use FreeBSD::PortsIndex; my(%i, $i); tie %i, FreeBSD::PortsIndex, "/usr/ports/INDEX"; $i = tied(%i); # Get information about a port print $i{"foo-1.1"}->maintainer(), "\n"; # Set information about a port $i{"foo-1.1"}->maintainer("foo@bar.org"); # Dump all information about a port print $i{"foo-1.1"}->as_text(); # Turn the port's information back into an INDEX line print $i{"foo-1.1"}->as_index(); # Create a new INDEX file that contains the changed information open(F, "/tmp/INDEX") or die "Can't open /tmp/INDEX"; print F $i->as_index(); close(F); Because FreeBSD::PortsIndex was a tied hash, you could use the normal Perl operators (sort(), keys(), each(), etc) to iterate over it. That's as far as I got. I didn't re-write any existing programs to use these new objects. Subscribing to the mailing list was a good first step, since that's where most announcements of things to do will happen. Do you know how to use CVSup to keep your system up to date? In particular, do you know how to keep an up to date copy of the documentation repository? You'll probably need to be able to do that. Your DocBook experience is particularly handy. If you can, please take a look at doc/en/handbook/* in the CVS repository and let me know what you think. I'm shortly going to be committing some changes so that this can be used to generate PDF, RTF, PS, DVI, plain text, and HTML formats, and the more people that can test this out the better. > Please get me up to speed on your projects and let me know what needs to be > done. You can find this at which is my current draft, and changes almost daily. Comments gratefully received. I'm also looking at "Rewrite the Handbook". If you look at you'll see some of my comments relating to this (comments.txt) and my proposed new layout for the Handbook (new-layout.txt). This is part of a discussion that took place on -doc a few weeks back. I can forward you the discussion if you'd like so you can see what happened. When I've finished the DocBook conversion this is going to be my next big project I think. Any comments you may have about my proposed new structure would be very useful. As you can see, we also need papers, tutorials, and sections in the Handbook (although for the latter I'd ask that people hold off for two weeks so I can finish the DocBook conversion). If you've had to do anything under FreeBSD that was difficult, badly documented, or non-intuitive, please feel free to provide documentation > Also, provide information about policies, procedures, etc. explains how to submit documentation. In generaly, if you've got new documentation to submit (or changes to existing documentation) send it in with send-pr and it'll get committed shortly (assuming there are no problems with this). Do this a few times with no problems, and you'll almost certainly get asked to become a committer, so you can commit your own changes. Note though that committers are still encouraged to post their changes to the -doc mailing list for review first. Finally, two more things you might be interested in -- Wolfram Schneider is the FreeBSD WebMaster, and you can always get in touch with him to see if there's anything you can help with on the web side of things. His e-mail address is wosch@freebsd.org. Also, have you seen DaemonNews? They're at . They're always on the lookout for interesting BSD related articles, and I think they probably have one or two permanent positions to fill as well. Hope that's useful, and don't hesitate to get in touch. I'm happy to get asked questions via the -doc mailing list -- traffic on that list is quite light, and it helps get the answers out to a wider audience. I'm about to post a call for testers to confirm that the ports for the Doc. Proj. all install properly and the Makefile correctly builds all the formats. If all goes well, I expect to have cut over to doc/en/handbook by the end of the year. In the meantime, please don't commit to it, 'cos it makes my job merging changes more difficult :-) N -- C.R.F. There are two things I'd like tested at the moment. First is the generation of HTML, RTF, and plain text formats. Second is the generation of PostScript and PDF formats. To start with; * Install ports/textproc/docproj * Download (use CVSup or similar) and checkout the latest version of doc/en/handbook. This is the DocBook version of the Handbook. To test the HTML generation There are a few things not in the docproj port that are required from the ports system. * www/tidy * www/lynx They'll be added soon. In addition, you need to cut-n-paste the following into doc/en/handbook/conv.pl #!/usr/local/bin/perl -pi s/“/\`\`/g; s/”/''/g; s/—/---/g; s/–/--/g; s/…/.../g; s/$/\$/g; (Yeah, I know this isn't seamless, I'll be tidying it up on Friday or Sunday night). Then convert the Handbook % cd doc/en/handbook % make Should leave you with a bunch of .html files. Load index.html into your browser and play around. % make FORMATS=html-chunk should make one big HTML file instead, probably ~1MB in size. % make FORMATS=ascii should make one big .txt file, and 1 big HTML file (the .txt file is generated from the HTML file). This depends on Lynx being installed. % make FORMATS=rtf should make one big .rtf file which you can load into your favourite RTF viewer (Word, Star Office, whatever). Any problems, please let me know. To test PostScript and PDF generation Install the ports/print/jadetex port. THIS WILL INSTALL teTeX-beta if you haven't already got it. This is a ~ 30MB download, so you might not want to test this. If so, I understand. PS and PDF generation take a while. If you have installed this port, you should be able to do % make FORMATS=ps to generate a large handbook.ps file and % make FORMATS=pdf to make a PDF file. Use Ghostview to view them (or Ghostview for the PS and Adobe Acroread for the PDF -- Ghostview will read both formats though). This will generate some errors from Jade about undefined variables with 'jpja' in their names. You can safely ignore these for the time being. It will also create from LaTeX errors on some of the TeX passes. Again, you can ignore these. If you are able to successfully generate these formats with these tools, I'd very much like to know about it. Thanks, N -- C.R.F. Consulting -- we're run to make me richer. . . They were already installed, so I just did the following: # cd /usr/lib # ls -l libcry* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 11 Nov 20 12:32 libcrypt.a -> libscrypt.a lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 16 Nov 20 12:32 libcrypt.so.2.0 -> libscrypt.so.2.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 13 Nov 20 12:33 libcrypt_p.a -> libscrypt_p.a # rm libcrypt.a libcrypt.so.2.0 libcrypt_p.a # ln -s libdescrypt.a libcrypt.a ; ln -s libdescrypt.so.2.0 libcrypt.so.2.0 ; # ln -s libdescrypt_p.a libcrypt_p.a # ls -l libcry* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 13 Dec 11 02:20 libcrypt.a -> libdescrypt.a lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 18 Dec 11 02:20 libcrypt.so.2.0 -> libdescrypt.so.2.0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root bin 15 Dec 11 02:20 libcrypt_p.a -> libdescrypt_p.a It seems to be working well. Now, this seems a FAQ (I have found 53 articles by Bill Paul with NIS or YP on the subject since 1995, many of them about the setup of NIS clients), but: % cd /usr/share/doc/ % egrep '(NIS|YP | YP)' handbook/handbook* FAQ/FAQ* Just matchs release notes and similar, not guides. I suggest a question 8.22 could be added to the FAQ: 8.22 How do I make my FreeBSD system a NIS(YP) client ? The answer could be something like: 1 - turn on NIS in /etc/rc.conf. Change the lines: nisdomainname="your_domain" nis_client_enable="YES" 2 - add a +::::::::: line to the passwd(5) file using vipw. Read the passwd(5) man page for details. 3 - explain the above bit about the DES libs. -- http://www.mat.uc.pt/~rps/f1/ an ex-tifoso since 95/11/13 .pt is Portugal| `Whom the gods love die young'-Menander (342-292 BC) Europe | Villeneuve 50-82, Toivonen 56-86, Senna 60-94 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Fri Dec 11 14:50:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA11726 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 14:50:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from imo27.mx.aol.com (imo27.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.71]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA11718 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 14:50:06 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from Imagoodriv@aol.com) From: Imagoodriv@aol.com Received: from Imagoodriv@aol.com by imo27.mx.aol.com (IMOv18.1) id IKDZa12607 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:43:03 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:43:03 EST To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: FreeBSD Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello, My name is Jason and I am trying to install Freebsd and have been for the past three weeks. I have finally gotten to the point where I need to connect to the FTP site and install everything. Well, I think that the documentation for this OS is great; however, I find it very difficult to relate to and understand. It would also be helpful to have a listing of the minimal files you will need to install and how big they are. I am using a macintosh to d- load most of everything I have now, but I don't know what I am going to need. This would be great for people like me who are wanting to try out FreeBSD for the first time and have MINIMAL equipment. And I don't mean like a 486 intel computer with a 400Mb HDD and a 28.8 connection; I'm talking about a Macintosh, 14.4 connection using AOhell, a 486 computer without internet connection, and 342Mb HHD space. Now if you can put a document out that specifically instructs someone how to put the minimal OS on the 486 (without using a CD-ROM....I don't have one) I will kiss your feet. I intend to freeze the doc/handbook/ portion of the CVS repository[1] at 00:00 GMT on Wednesday 16th December. During the freeze, no new commits should be made to doc/handbook/. At the same time, no commits should be made to doc/en/handbook/ without going through me first. This should allow me to finish merging in changes from the LinuxDoc version of the Handbook to the DocBook version (which is currently a bit of a moving target). If you would like to test the current state of play as regards the conversion of the Handbook to various formats (PS, PDF, HTML, RTF, plain text) please see my message to -doc with the message ID 19981210203033.34618@nothing-going-on.org When the merge is complete I'll post a call for testers to confirm that the DocBook version of the Handbook builds and installs correctly on their machines. After confirmations have come through I'll update doc/Makefile to use doc/en/handbook to generate the Handbook. However, if you're interested in testing this, let me know now and I'll make sure you get e-mailed specifically when it's ready. A few days after that, the LinuxDoc version can die (die! die! die! -- sorry, got a trifle carried away there). Now would also be a good time to consult (and very shortly after this message is sent out you should be able to replace index.html with one of book.html.gz, book.rtf.gz, book.pdf.gz, book.ps.gz, and book.txt.gz) which is a draft of a Doc. Proj. primer for committers and contributers. It's unfinished, but is hopefully sufficiently complete that existing contributers and committers will be able to use it to understand the new Handbook. It also showcases what the output from the conversion process looks like (including the rather spiffy PDF with embedded links). I'd do the same for the Handbook (for those who just want to see it rather than build it) but that'll have to wait until I buy a new hard disk tomorrow. If you're a frequent Handbook contributor, now would also be a good time to take a poke through doc/en/handbook/ and familiarise yourself with it. N [1] Or rather, John Polstra will freeze it for me. In theory, commits will actually be prevented from happening. I'd be grateful if no one tried to test this however. -- C.R.F. Consulting -- we're run to make me richer. . . Hi I plan to release it under the BSD style copyright. I did see http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/freebsd-license.html but 1) where is the copyright of the handbook? The FreeBSD copyright say "in source and binary forms". A tutorial is not (and cannot be) a binary but is a text file. 2) What should I change in the BSD copyright to fit my need? The intent of the license is that 'binary' means 'processed form', so if you e.g. store the tutorial with the license as comments, they're not allowed to process and re-distribute it without your license. So I don't think you need to change it. Eivind. Thanks for taking the time to write to the documentation team. Perhaps you could help us to understand your difficulty a bit better so that we can look at addressing it. On the main web page I see this as the first paragraph in lynx (after all the menu items): What is FreeBSD? FreeBSD is an advanced BSD UNIX operating system for "PC-compatible" computers, developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. I can't quite see where this is causing you trouble. Do you perhaps need the terms "operating system" or "UNIX" or "PC-compatible" to be explained to make sense of this paragraph? As for a history of BSD UNIX, that is not the primary role of this site but you will find more background in the FreeBSD Handbook which you will find on the web site. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Dec 12 14:46:45 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA06680 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 14:46:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from saffron.fsl.noaa.gov (saffron.fsl.noaa.gov [137.75.253.44]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA06667 for ; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 14:46:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from kelly@plutotech.com) Received: from plutotech.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by saffron.fsl.noaa.gov (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA06197; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 15:46:37 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from kelly@plutotech.com) Message-ID: <3672F24D.CC324B76@plutotech.com> Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 15:46:37 -0700 From: Sean Kelly Organization: Pluto Technologies X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [en] (X11; I; FreeBSD 2.2.7-RELEASE i386) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Marshall Price CC: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: What is it? True, it doesn't say why it's called "FreeBSD", but it does say what it is. When I surf to http://www.freebsd.org/ I see the following in big red letters: What is FreeBSD? followed by a paragraph: FreeBSD is an advanced BSD UNIX operating system for "PC-compatible" computers ... which says that it's something for PC-style personal computers, and specifically, it's an operating system of some sort. I can see that people who don't know what "BSD" is in this context might be confused. I might reword this paragraph as follows: FreeBSD is a freely available advanced operating system for PC-compatible computers, providing a powerful Berkeley-style UNIX environment. I've removed the reference to "a large team of individuals" since I don't think it's important at this point. Take care. --Sean To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Dec 12 15:10:45 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id PAA08884 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 15:10:45 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from oitunix.oit.umass.edu (nscs23p16.remote.umass.edu [128.119.179.59]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA08879 for ; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 15:10:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gp@oitunix.oit.umass.edu) Received: (from gp@localhost) by oitunix.oit.umass.edu (8.9.1/8.9.1) id SAA30118; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 18:10:45 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from gp) Message-ID: <19981212181044.B684@oit.umass.edu> Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 18:10:44 -0500 From: Greg Pavelcak To: Nik Clayton Cc: doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: teTeX problem means no testing doc formats References: <19981210203033.34618@nothing-going-on.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.2i In-Reply-To: <19981210203033.34618@nothing-going-on.org>; from Nik Clayton on Thu, Dec 10, 1998 at 08:30:33PM +0000 Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, Dec 10, 1998 at 08:30:33PM +0000, Nik Clayton wrote: > Folks, > > To test PostScript and PDF generation > > Install the ports/print/jadetex port. Aah. We tend to assume that anyone wanting to use FreeBSD already understands what an operating system is, that UNIX is one of many types of operating system, and that BSD is one of the "flavours" of UNIX, and that that's where FreeBSD fits in. So we start right off talking to them on that level. On the odd occasion, we get mail from people who were trying to see FreeBSD as a win95 application, people who seem to have no idea that there are computers running on anything other than Microsoft. Things like "Why can't I run boot.flp in win95, do I have to upgrade to win98?" They are new to computers, or their operating system has shielded them from the nasty perils of learning anything. One wonders how they ended up here, though. > Besides, if using FreeBSD > means getting rid of DOS (?), the immediate question is whether I'd have > to wipe out everything and start over with a blank, empty computer. Basically, yes and yes (but see below). Just for starters, different operating systems partition and format their disks in quite different ways. DOS is an operating system. I'm told it descended from something called Quick and Dirty Operating System (QDOS) and has since had several hand-holding shells added over the top of it, the last three being GUI interfaces to DOS. Generally applications or programs that were built for one operating system can't be run on another. It is possible to run two operating systems on the same computer with a little bit of trickery. The easiest way, for example, is to have a separate hard disk for each and use special software to handle the bootup and allow you to select which disk (only one) to use. And other, more flexible variations on this too. So we try to be honest and tell people it's possible to run Microsoft and FreeBSD on the same computer, but when they have *no* basic computer knowledge I suspect that lets them keep assuming that all computers are like theirs and FreeBSD is a small microsoft-compatible application like WinZip or Netscape. > (I was fortunate enough to find it in the trash, with Lotus Symphony > on it, to which I've gotten addicted, though it's pretty old: 1987.) > I suspect that Windows 98 is making new computer users less aware than > ever before what goes on inside their machines. When I think of the term > "operating system," I think of DOS, its commands, the way it formats > disks, the interrupts, etc. That's really all I have to go on. OK, that's pretty close. For now, think of UNIX as doing all those things too, but more reliably and with up dozens more commandline options, and less help. We have an optional graphical interface too. But I doubt that is it really our role to teach people what an operating system is. Does Microsoft or Apple do that on their web sites? No. Does your local Ford dealer teach people what a wheel is or explain the difference between a Ford and a tricycle in a brochure for passers by to take? What would be nice on the web site, though, is a quick way to identify people who don't have the background to fathom what we're about (or have them self-identify) and give them a brief message or pointer to save the time and frustration of all parties. > When I think of UNIX, I think of "Jurassic Park," and assume that > it's something only universities have. But "BSD" means even less to > me. It reminds me of a brand of underwear. :-) Well it is sort of a brand name, probably the first time you've encountered the possibility of different brand names associated with any one style of operating system, since your experience has only been with monopolies. Dn't worry about what BSD is until you're comfortable about UNIX style operating systems, and before that, the concept of operating systems in general. > It took me a long time to figure out that "PC-compatible" simply means > "not made by Macintosh," though why Macintosh computers aren't "personal" > is beyond me. I meet a lot of people who are only aware that one of those two hardware styles exists! Actually there's a huge range of different types of computers, apart from these two. Of course those whose hardware and operating system have the same name are particularly disadvantaged if their system has discouraged them from learning. Basically I see these all as problems, and feel for the victims, but they're not *our* problems. Because we don't own the problems it's tricky to work out how we could deal with them on the FreeBSD web site. No point adding to people's misery, or talking down the the majority of visitors who are hard core unix types. If you have any more suggestions from your side of the fencepost, they'd be very welcome. Questions about FreeBSD are answered by the people at freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, and here at freebsd-doc we plan the documentation and deal with feedback such as yours. If we do end up agreeing to make a change, maybe you'd be prepared to comment on it then too. I've copied this back to the documentation project team, because I know others will be watching with interest. (I'm just one of many volunteers here.) Often when someone like you comes along we simply agree to misunderstand each other and go our separate ways because that's easier than sharing and helping. Maybe this time is different. -- Regards, -*Sue*- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Dec 12 16:47:42 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA19279 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 16:47:42 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk [193.237.89.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA19251 for ; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 16:47:32 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nik@nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk) Received: (from nik@localhost) by nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (8.8.8/8.8.8) id UAA05623; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 20:20:00 GMT (envelope-from nik) Message-ID: <19981212201959.40838@nothing-going-on.org> Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 20:19:59 +0000 From: Nik Clayton To: Eivind Eklund , Malartre , freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Man page Copyrights References: <366AEB2C.A48E1D56@aei.ca> <19981207011420.N8663@follo.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89.1i In-Reply-To: <19981207011420.N8663@follo.net>; from Eivind Eklund on Mon, Dec 07, 1998 at 01:14:20AM +0100 Organization: Nik at home, where there's nothing going on Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Mon, Dec 07, 1998 at 01:14:20AM +0100, Eivind Eklund wrote: > http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/freebsd-license.html - see the parent > (http://www.freebsd.org/copyright/) for more details etc. > > > 3) Do I need such a copyright notice? > > You should have _some_ sort of copyright/license statement, to let > people know what they are allowed to do. Here is one I'm experimenting with, based on the BSD copyright, for SGML documentation of my own. I've sent it to -core for deliberation on whether it (or something like it) should be applied to the Handbook and other documents. The *first* thing I will do if -core thinks this is a good idea is contact the people who have contributed to the Handbook, and get their agreement. I am most emphatically *not* talking about imposing a copyright notice that the authors disagree with.
