I need to overclock again and write down the messages this week. I have a PC (Compaq Presario with a Predator motherboard) that I have successfully overclocked to 133 (132.67 actually, 66*2) from 120. I get no error messages in FreeBSD at bootup in 133. When I overclock to 150 (152.74, 50*3), I get a message pertaining to, if I remember, unable to sync the disks (EIDE). Is this speedup too much in that I must reload FreeBSD(I'm not opposed to it) or is it just too fast for my disks? Anyone familiar with Compaq Predators? The CMOS is on the hard drive(UUGGGHH!!!) and I can get to it and make changes and reboot, but I can't get the OS to load. I have identical removable root drives, one with FBSD, one with W95. I get the same (I'm assuming) results: unstable OS loading. I promise I will send more info later. Is there anything you can surmise from what I have written so far? -- UNIX Rules!!! However, the third IDE controller does not seem to work with the IDE on the SB16. I say this because it gives me the message wdc2 not found at 0x168 I did an override config for the SB16 IDE as follows pnp 1 3 os enable port0 0x168 irq0 10 I am lost as to what I should do next. Here is the output of pnpinfo that I ran may be you might have some clue as to what should be done next. Thanks for the information. I've now installed a new, larger heat sink, and things run fine. > Note that these processors should be 3.2 volts, not 3.3; I have more than > once had some other board pre-configured and 'set' with the voltage too > high. The result is burned fingers. In fact, there *are* some 3.3/3.3V processors out there; I saw them when I bought mine (which is the standard 3.3/3.2V), and was very suspcious. c't (the German magazine) reports that they were specials (probably half-rejects :-) which were never intended for the open market. I think part of my problem was that the motherboard has an "Automatic" voltage setting, which is supposed to autodetect the chip and set it accordingly. When I bought the board, they strongly recommended that I leave it on automatic. I've since changed to 3.2V. I don't know whether that, the cooler, or the combination sorted things out. BTW, has anybody seen that AMD had bought out a K6/266? It's in .25 micron technology, and instead of the 33W of the /233, it only uses 8W. c't tested it and found it to be good. Several people responded with similar problems when I posted here for help, so I thought I'd let everyone know what finally fixed it. The problem was that the first 16 ports would work fine, but the second 16 wouldn't work at all. A friend of mine got a 32Ye and his worked perfect without any problems. The only difference was that he had his set as cy2 since he was adding it to his system which already had 2 8Yo cards in it and I was replacing my two 8Yo cards so mine was set as cy0. I had tried *everything* else, so I decided to try putting in one of my 8Yo's as cy0 and setup the 32Ye as cy1 and guess what ... it worked! On top of that I also had one defective card in the mix which made it even harder to figure out. But the bottom line is for some reason the 32Ye will *not* work as cy0 (at least it wouldn't with the two cards on the two servers I tried it in). Only drawback is that you must have another Cyclades card to put in as cy0, most of us who are upgrading to this probably do though. Someone who knows more about the cy driver and devices on FreeBSD will have to look into the whys of this, but I'm assuming that it has something to do with the differences in the devices when you make ttyc0 and ttyc1 and up. Some more testing may need to be done to ensure that this is in fact the problem too since I did have a defective card which was part of the reason things weren't working, but even the new card that is working now wouldn't work as cy0, so I'm pretty sure that is what eventually solved this mess. Anyone who has been having these problems, or who does have a 32Ye installed and working, I'd love to hear your experiences too. Some of the weirdest things I've heard have to do with how finicky these boards can be about RAM selection. Buying the correct speed from one manufacturer has never been so important. I also remember reading about some cache limitations of certain chipsets (e.g., how much memory they will effectively cache), but I don't remember any of it. I'm looking for at least 4 GB uncompressed capacity at a street price for the unit (not necessarily including interface card) around $375. What models have you had good experiences in installing, operating, and with its technical support among those in the market. I've never bought a tape drive for a PC. Though, I'm experienced with the major PC peripherals regarding installation and configuring. The system is an Intel Pentium 200 MHz with 32 MB. Windoze space is a little over 5 GB and FreeBSD space is about 1.8 GB. I do have plans of increasing disk space with another disk to allow keeping uptodate with FreeBSD-Stable. The only drives *WELL* supported by FreeBSD are SCSI tape drives. (FreeBSD, I believe, now supports IDE/ATAPI tape drives, but I do not know how good/stable/etc. that support is). This is a problem, because most tape drives for PC's are "floppy tape" variety (they connect up to the floppy disk controller, or to a special controller board that is essentially similar to the floppy disk controller but uses different resources). AVOID THESE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Not only is the performance bad (very error prone, IMHO) but the support under FreeBSD is virtually nonexistent. (There is support, but it is not full support - you need to use a special program to access the tape device, you can't just use a /dev file like you can with normal tapes) and this support has been molding away for a long time (ie it hasn't been updated). Yeah, SCSI tapes are definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, they are a bit hard to find. Most computer places don't have them, so you will have to mail-order or go hunting. And they cost somewhat more than their floppy-tape counterparts. But believe me, all this extra money and effort is worth it. SCSI tapes are extremely stable, fast, and versatile under FreeBSD. Avoid the HP/Colorado and Seagate SCSI tape, however, I have heard bad things about these (coming from, I believe, the FreeBSD lists). Other than that, most any tape drive will do. Many like Exabyte drives; the Archive family is popular as well. - --- Donald Burr - Ask me for my PGP key | PGP: Your WWW HomePage: http://DonaldBurr.base.org/ ICQ #1347455 | right to Address: P.O. I'd recommend you spend a little more on the drive, and a lot less on the tapes. In the deal, getting a far better drive. The best decent-priced drives you can get are 4mm DAT drives (DLT drives might be better, but they're WAY expensive). If you're super concerned about cost, you might consider getting a referbished one. Although there are probably several sources for these, one you might check out is http://www.insight.com/. Check out their blue plate specials. 4mm DAT drives basically come in two flavors these days: DDS-2 and DDS-3. DDS-2 is 4GB uncompressed, 8GB compressed, with the 120m DDS-2 DAT tapes. You can get these tapes for $15-$20 if you shop around. Backup speed is approximately .5MB/sec. DDS-3 is 12GB uncompressed, 24GB compressed, on a 125m DDS-3 tape. I paid about $25 per tape for these. Backup speed is roughly 1-1.5MB/sec. You'll find variations on these numbers, but that's a good start. Calculate how many tapes you'd like to have in an ideal world to keep rotating backups on all your computers, then calculate the cost of the drive *and* the tapes, and compare it to one of the cheaper drives. Insight has a refurbished Conner/Seagate (Archive, actually) DDS-2 drive with 4GB/8GB for around $450. I've had a drive similar to this for quite a while, and it has worked great. If you can dig a little deeper into your budget, they might still have some refurbished Seagate (Archive Python) DDS-3 drives left for ~$665. I just bought one of these, and it's an awesome drive. So, don't just look at the specials they have listed, hit the specials search page and type in variations on "DDS" "DDS2" "DDS-2" "DDS3", etc.... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael L. Try something like chio move slot 0 drive 0 to load the first (0th) slot in the tape magazine into the (only) tape transport. To load the next tape, you have to chio move drive 0 slot 0 chio move slot 1 drive 0 It won't let you move a tape from the transport into an occupied slot. louie From owner-freebsd-hardware Sat Feb 7 09:33:02 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id JAA05267 for hardware-outgoing; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 09:33:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from fly.HiWAAY.net (root@fly.HiWAAY.net [208.147.154.56]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id JAA05252 for ; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 09:32:57 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net) Received: from nospam.hiwaay.net (max2-143.HiWAAY.net [208.147.145.143]) by fly.HiWAAY.net (8.8.8/8.8.6) with ESMTP id LAA06458; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 11:32:55 -0600 (CST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by nospam.hiwaay.net (8.8.8/8.8.4) with ESMTP id KAA20251; Sat, 7 Feb 1998 10:31:03 -0600 (CST) Message-Id: <199802071631.KAA20251@nospam.hiwaay.net> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.1 12/23/97 To: Jamie Clark Cc: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG From: David Kelly Subject: Re: Q: Opinions on which Tape Drive to Buy? IMHO Seagate makes excellent DAT/DDS tape drives. OTOH Sony SDT-5200 is underwhelming. Exabyte 8mm 8505XL drives seem to work very well with FreeBSD and Sparc Solaris but for Irix one needs exactly the right patches (for Irix) and the right firmware (for the Exabyte) else its a disaster. Once I scrounged a P90, put FreeBSD on it, and declared it an Exabyte Tape Server for a group of Irix machines. Was much easier than making the Exabyte work on Irix. Of course I only got that wise after totally trashing the Irix boot disk 4 times. http://www.basoncomputer.com was advertising an Archive 4326 for $399. Not sure if that price was updated on their web page or not. But I have 4 of these on various systems and have been very happy. 2/4G DDS-1/ compressed, 4G/8G DDS-2/compressed.
