Does that mean that it will be slow or unreliable ? both? Something else? I have another card: Cogent PCI 960TP / DECchip21040: PCI / 10MB Ethernet which I could also use for the main connection.... However, if this machine is going to be a firewall/router, it will need 2 ethernet cards. I have 2 of the EtherExpress cards but only one Cogent. Plus, I was under the impression that unless your BIOS specifically supports "Boot from SCSI", the SCSI bus adapter BIOS will not install to allow a boot from the SCSI disk in the first place; having four IDE devices with the primary adaptor setup as your normal boot device would by default prevent a SCSI boot! I loaded the FBSD boot loader onto my primary ESDI disk a year or two back and pointed it at my SCSI disks attached to the bus adaptor (an AHA1740A), then used FDISK to set the bootable partition to be the Primary DOS partition on the 1st ESDI disk; this means the BIOS boot loader will first load the secondary loader in the MBR on the first (for you IDE) disk, which now contains the FBSD boot loader; you should then be able to choose the tertiary boot loader for the OS you want, eg. DOS on the first disk, FBSD on the (non-DOS bootable) SCSI disk. It's like it is turning off sync or changing whenever is processes certain keystrokes (cursor movement, mostly). There exists a driver for Linux, which is based on 3COM's internal information. You could mimic it and the ported driver may work, but it will be quite hard to maintain it without further support from 3COM. - nao To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Jun 9 05:39:46 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA08046 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 05:39:46 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from vader.cs.berkeley.edu (vader.CS.Berkeley.EDU [128.32.38.234]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id FAA07977 for ; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 05:39:37 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from asami@vader.cs.berkeley.edu) Received: from silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (sjx-ca115-10.ix.netcom.com [207.223.162.74]) by vader.cs.berkeley.edu (8.8.7/8.7.3) with ESMTP id DAA11960; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 03:49:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.8.8/8.6.9) id DAA14032; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 03:49:52 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 03:49:52 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199806091049.DAA14032@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: hamada@astec.co.jp CC: cdubuque@rrnet.com, freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG In-reply-to: (message from HAMADA Naoki on 09 Jun 1998 15:43:15 +0900) Subject: Re: 3com 10/100 PCMCIA cards? So far, I have been an enthusiastic and regular user of FreeBSD. Unfortunately I ran into problems recently. These problems are related to my NCR53C810 SCSI controller. I am not quite sure, if it is a hardware and/or software problem. Anyway: my PC configuration is as follows: Pentium, Gigabyte Board, AMD 100 (133) MHZ chip 48 MByte RAM NCR53C810 SCSI Controller usual floppy drive Elsa Winner 1000Trio Graphics card disks and CD-ROM's IDE: Quantum Fireball 2.1 GByte SCSI: 1.) Toshiba CD-ROM 2.) Quantum Atlas II 2.1 GByte 3.) Quantum FireBall 4.3 GByte The SCSI bus is properly terminated. Operating Systems: FreeBSD 2.2.5 Windows NT 4.0 (service-pack 3) The problem is: the ncr-controller crashes occasionally and completely randomly with an ncr0:fatal error . It then gets a timeout and the machine hangs and must be rebooted. I do not get this failure with my Windows NT partition, wich I also installed on my PC. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? The NCR controller is about 4 years old and the Firmware version is 3.07.00. Any suggestions are welcome Regards Peter ----- End Included Message ----- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Tue Jun 9 08:55:16 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA25069 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 08:55:16 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from csrlink.net (schroeder.csrlink.net [209.173.80.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA24949; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 08:54:53 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from root@techyman.ml.org) Received: from techyman.ml.org (rlynn.csrlink.net [206.228.95.43]) by csrlink.net (8.8.8/8.8.5) with SMTP id LAA27522; Tue, 9 Jun 1998 11:54:18 -0400 (EDT) Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 11:54:17 -0400 (EDT) From: "Robert J Lynn Jr (TeChYMaN)" To: morph@shinbiro.com cc: questions@FreeBSD.ORG, hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD and Initio INI-9100 SCSI card? I have just upgraded my lowly 486 board to a TX based motherboard (FIC PT-2007). Everything is great but I noticed after booting Win 95 and coming back the BIOS started assigning IRQ 11 to both the video card and SCSI control (Matrox Millenium and NCR810 resp.) Is this okay? If not what should I try and do: - The BIOS has an option to not assign the IRQ to the video card. - Set some ISA options in the BIOS (I can assign DMA and IRQ to PCI/PnP or ISA). - Set everything to PnP. (currently set to no PnP). Other hardware - Internal 33k modem on COM2. - 3c509Combo in ISA mode. Will add in a Sound Blaster 16 PnP, once I have gone up to 2.2.6 (later tonight hopefully). Actually, it's less likely that this has anything to do with fast interrupts - I think a P200 has more than enough squirt to handle the interrupt load a 57600 and leave processing time open for kernel PPP. Remember that these are interrupt-level buffer overflows (interrupt handler has delivered more data than the in-kernel consumer is accepting). -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Wed Jun 10 12:28:54 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA21680 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Wed, 10 Jun 1998 12:28:54 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from athena.compulink.gr (athena.compulink.gr [195.242.129.99]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA21606 for ; Wed, 10 Jun 1998 12:28:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from cyric@compulink.gr) Received: from athena.compulink.gr (athena.compulink.gr [195.242.129.99]) by athena.compulink.gr (8.8.7/COMPULINK-3.0) with SMTP id WAA17938 for ; Wed, 10 Jun 1998 22:22:43 +0300 (EET) Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 22:22:43 +0300 (EET) From: Cyric To: hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Rendition & X Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Is there any support for Rendition-based graphics cards under X ? This is a known problem with the driver. It needs someone to sit down with one of these devices and the hardware documentation and fix it. The LANCE family is large, and relatively complex, but well-documented. This would be an excellent first-time hardware hacker project. If anyone would like to attempt this, I can provide documentation and one or more sample cards. My question is what is up with these cards... do i need to do anything special for them????... also looked to see if i could build a kernel that just supported this card but it was nowhere to be found in 2.2.6-RELEASE's LINT..... I noticed something similar when I bought this new trackball, which sits on the PS/2 port. The cursor zips across the screen fast enough, but selecting text in an xterm is a whole different story. It used to be that when I clicked/dragged to select text the "reverse" selection followed the cursor perfectly. Now it lags behind the cursor and updates in bursts. Weird, eh? Hi, I'm the 'proud' or otherwise owner of 3 x 2940UW's, the only problem I've had with them has been termination - which was my fault, and with 40Mhz kicking around ribbon cable - you probably can't blame them for that... ;-) I've never had any problems with them in FreeBSD - some people say there not the fastest, to be honest - I've not tried anything else (though I've thought about it). They work, and at this point in my life - I'm quite happy with things that 'work'... (maybe that explains why I'm running FreeBSD? ) Regards, Karl To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri Jun 12 17:30:06 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA23699 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Fri, 12 Jun 1998 17:30:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from quark.ChrisBowman.com (crbowman.erols.com [209.122.47.155]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA23584 for ; Fri, 12 Jun 1998 17:29:46 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from crb@ChrisBowman.com) Received: from fermion (fermion [10.0.1.2]) by quark.ChrisBowman.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id UAA02427; Fri, 12 Jun 1998 20:31:27 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from crb@ChrisBowman.com) Message-Id: <199806130131.UAA02427@quark.ChrisBowman.com> X-Sender: crb@quark.ChrisBowman.com X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0.1 Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 20:29:21 -0400 To: Ben Goodwin From: "Christopher R. Run it wide and get the 40MB/sec marketing number. Still, 20MHz isn't anything to scoff at either. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. Anyone know why this happens? Interesting. The "updates in bursts" looks like an interrupt problem. I've had similar problems, but I hadn't associated them with the change from serial to PS/2. I'm currently using a MouseMan on a serial port on my laptop, and it works fine, but I've been having real problems on my "real" machine with a PS/2 port. I thought it was the screen resolution (1600x1200) which was causing the problems, but now I'll investigate more carefully.
