Do you have bpfilter compiled into the kernel? I don't use ISDN on FreeBSD, but it's the same error as if you don't have bpf compiled in. I'm using an AVM Fritz! ISDN card which I managed to get patches for and I built a kernel which was able to contact my college (many thanks to Wolfgang Helbig here!). However, I didn't actually succeed in connecting to the dialup machine because the unpatched bisdn package doesn't support dynamic IP address assignment. Wolfgang suggested using bisdntest-3 (which I downloaded and added to my kernel sources) but it wouldn't compile. It does say in the Readme file that bisdntest is for a 3.0-current kernel, I'm running 2.2.5-stable, so the patch files didn't apply cleanly. I finished off the patches by hand and tried to compile, but I'm missing a file "poll.h". I also noticed that there were several additional entries in the options.i386 and /sys/conf/files files. Has anyone tried compiling bisdntest-3 (or -2) on a 2.2.5 stable system? Further question: how or where do I start if I want to understand how the kernel source files are organised and what each one does? I used bisdn-0.97, bisdntest-3.tar.gz and BISDN-ppp-FreeBSD2.2.tgz to get isdn(/isdnpppd) running on my 2.2-STABLE box here. I, too had to fix some rejections, but it works like a charm now. If you want to, you can mail me directly (in german :-) and I can try to help you. Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure it handles dynamic assignment correctly, as we're using static IP's here. But ISTR that it worked correctly during a mis-configuration where IP's have been assigned dynamically. I repeat the question for those who were not there : I am trying to setup a FreeBSD 2.2.5-R box with a Teles S0/16.3 card inside to connect to my ISP using synchronous PPP as I used to do with the same machine under Linux. The problem is, when I ping a site, a dial command is echoed, but it seems that no connection is established. I managed once or twice to have it connected but the connection stopped immediately because my ISP uses dynamic addressing and changing the IP address of the ppp0 interface made isdnpppd hang up the line. I tried the "new" bisdntest_2 kernel patches archive, which docs precise that the problem no longer exists... but there is no way to make it connect! Since it works with other OSes (Linux, MS-Win...), I dont think the problem is due to hardware, but rather software. In fact I can't find a precise way to get things to work. Currently I do this : # sh /etc/rc.bisdn # route add -interface default ppp0 # ifconfig ppp0 up # ping www.freebsd.org Here are the log files I can find. Messages are from the kernel and from bisdnd. Thanks a lot again to anyone who could give me a hand :-) 0269854351 is my ISP number 0536421021 is my own phone number ......1020 is my ISDN line number ... and, sorry, some lines may be longer than 75 characters. --------------------------------[starts here]------------------------------ At boot time : Feb 13 00:57:13 abtl /kernel: tel0 at 0xd80 irq 5 on isa Feb 13 00:57:13 abtl /kernel: IPP attach 0 f01c8e3c Feb 13 00:57:13 abtl /kernel: IPP attach 1 f01c9e7c Feb 13 00:57:13 abtl /kernel: tel0: card type Teles S0/16.3 When bisdnd starts with debug level 31 : Feb 13 00:58:18 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG rates: index 0 day 0 = 0.0-5.0:2400 [...more info on the rates...] Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG rates: index 3 day 6 = 21.0-24.0:250 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: name = ISDNIP Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: interface = ipi0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: isdntype = 1 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: reaction = 1 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: protocol = 0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: telnloc-ldo = 0536421021 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: telnrem-ldo = 0269854351 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: telnloc-rdi = 1020 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: telnrem-rdi = * Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: controller = 0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: dialretries = 3 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: recoverytime = 3 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: callbackwait time = 1 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: idletime-in = 360 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: idletime-out = 80 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: blocksize = 2048 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: unitlength-dyn = 0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: calledbackwait max time = 10 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG entry 0: ratetyp = 0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG WARNING, no unitlength in entry 0 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG WARNING, no earlyhangup in entry 0, using 5 Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG unit length source = dynamically calculated Feb 13 00:58:19 abtl bisdnd[187]: DBG device /dev/icard0 currently set to ISDN protocol DSS1, OK! I am using i4b with sppp including dynamic IP addresses and did *not* have to go back. i4b's support of PPP is much more mature than BISDN's. (which I beated to PPP and nearly to death). The file opt_i4b.h is created by config(8) and put in the kernel compile directory. It contains preprocessor symbols which in turn are used to control the inclusion of source. Your ``fix'' effectively excluded all low level driver source and caused the breakage during loading the kernel. Sorry, I don't know how to feed the NetBSD configuration to make it create opt_i4b.h. For FreeBSD this is described in FreeBSD/INSTALLATION, step 8. This one liner is the content of my opt_i4b.h: #define TEL_S0_16_3 1 Wolfgang To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sat Feb 21 12:02:10 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA09844 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 12:02:10 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from casparc.ppp.net (mail.ppp.net [194.64.12.35]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id MAA09823 for ; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 12:02:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ernie!bert.kts.org!hm@ppp.net) Received: from ernie by casparc.ppp.net with uucp (Smail3.1.28.1 #1) id m0y6L7Z-00339xC; Sat, 21 Feb 98 21:02 MET Received: from bert.kts.org(really [194.55.156.2]) by ernie.kts.org via sendmail with smtp id for ; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 20:15:25 +0100 (CET) (Smail-3.2.0.91 1997-Jan-14 #3 built 1998-Feb-14) Received: by bert.kts.org via sendmail with stdio id for freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 20:13:41 +0100 (CET) (Smail-3.2.0.94 1997-Apr-22 #7 built 1997-Jul-4) Message-Id: From: hm@kts.org (Hellmuth Michaelis) Subject: Re: alpha release of isdn4bsd available In-Reply-To: <26405.888078721@time.cdrom.com> from "Jordan K. Stefan said, that the interactive response is better than before but exactly there are still problems (i suspect they are in the interrupt handling code of the HSCX) which have to be solved. The isdnd has to be debugged more and has to be made much more stable than it currenly is. There is almost no error recovery mechanism (with the exception what is specified in the standards itself) available. And this list can be continued for a long time - it is alpha code, give it a bit time and the eyes of some people who don't dream already at night of IRQ handling routines for not quite documented Siemens chipsets in totally undocumented card designs. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis hm@kts.org Hamburg, Europe "Those who can, do. This is strange. This is really, really strange. There is either something completely wrong in the irq handling code or there is something fundamentally different in how this special situation is handled on SMP implementations. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis hm@kts.org Hamburg, Europe "Those who can, do. This is really, really strange. Not *that* strange. During initialization of the ISAC and HSCX chips they raise the interrupt line - exactly once, since these chips are requesting interrupts by just setting the level, not by giving a positive edge on the IR line. In an SMP environment, this first (and only) edge is lost and the ISR is never called. The MASK/DEMASK sequence in isic_isac_l1_cmd() produces this edge every time a layer1 command is issued and ISAC/HSCX commands are pending. A layer1 command is issued from the "upper half" of the kernel, i. e. not from the ISR, if ph_data_req() finds that layer 1 is not in state ,,F7 activated''. The raising edge is not lost, if maximal debug reporting is turned on for all layers. Prerequesite for the final fix is to find out, why this first edge is lost. Synchronous PPP just works and is a lot easier to get running. Read the FAQ, there's a description of how to get sPPP working. --- Gary Jennejohn Home - garyj@muc.de Work - garyj@fkr.dec.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sat Feb 21 14:37:47 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id OAA27427 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 14:37:47 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from peedub.muc.de (newpc.muc.ditec.de [194.120.126.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id OAA27419 for ; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 14:37:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from garyj@peedub.muc.de) Received: from peedub.muc.de (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by peedub.muc.de (8.8.8/8.6.9) with ESMTP id XAA27708 for ; Sat, 21 Feb 1998 23:38:25 +0100 (CET) Message-Id: <199802212238.XAA27708@peedub.muc.de> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.1 12/23/97 To: freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: i4b on NetBSD 1.3 Reply-To: Gary Jennejohn In-reply-to: Your message of "Sat, 21 Feb 1998 20:31:16 +0100." <199802211931.UAA00876@rvc1.informatik.ba-stuttgart.de> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Sat, 21 Feb 1998 23:38:25 +0100 From: Gary Jennejohn Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Wolfgang Helbig writes: >> Hi! >> >> The previous problem is still there, I have ignored the code for now and >> commented it out. >> >> >> ../../../../i4b/layer1/i4b_isic.c:52: opt_i4b.h: No such file or directory >> >> the next change is: >> >> /usr/src/i4b/layer1/i4b_isic.c >> >> // Sat Feb 21 19:52:51 MET 1998 dave@turbocat.de >> //#include "opt_i4b.h" > >Hmm, this was definitely the wrong way to fix. This one liner is the content of my opt_i4b.h: > >#define TEL_S0_16_3 1 > This is partly my fault, I added the opt_i4b.h stuff shortly before Hellmuth made the alpha release. Since I'm not running NetBSD I couldn't test the impact of this change. This should actually read: #if defined(__FreeBSD__) #include "opt_i4b.h" #endif but apparently Hellmuth missed i4b_isic.c :-( What you need is an options line in your kernel config file. Look at FreeBSD/CONFIG under the config: heading for the appropriate options to use for each card. I believe that the NetBSD config should place an appropriate -D
