Is there an analog in the US market? As I see it most of US options are internal/external TA's and ISDN routers. The TA's just provide some kind of sio interface and look like a modem, right? There are no US native ISDN drivers, right? If I am wrong about something, could someone point me to a better place to look. I skimmed through the isdn-digest files, and really didn't learn much about anything but i4b. thanks/danke/merci, Adrian -- adrian@virginia.edu ---->>>>| If I were stranded on a desert island, and System Administrator --->>>| I could only have one OS for my computer, Neurosurgical Visualization Lab ->>| it would be FreeBSD. Yes and no. isdn4bsd is (currently) geared towards a Siemens ISDN chipset mostly found on European internal boards. Some manufacturers, such as Teles, released an US version of their boards mostly adding an Uk0 interface (as the 2 wire i/f is called over here). Some US manufacturers have boards with this chipset. Another thing is protocol support for this board. I4b currently only supports the Q.931 signalling protocol, in the US something different is used. I know of someone who is working on this for the US, but i have no idea if he still does and in what state it is. Another way to go were to get an active card for wich an US protocol is supported and make that run for i4b - 2 or 3 other people are working on this. But in its current form isdn4bsd is not usable in the US. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis hm@kts.org Hamburg, Europe "Those who can, do. Those who can't, talk. That person is probably me ;) At any rate, here's my current status: I've written an adapter driver for the NetWarp under BISDN. It hasn't been tested with a switch as I'm in the US, but seems to communicate with the TA properly. Unfortunately I've not yet converted this driver to work with i4b as my time is being monopolized by a paying project :( I have also started the process of modifying the i4b Q.931 protocol code to meet National ISDN-1 standards (NI-1 is a fairly close derivitive of Q.931) but again my time is short until at least the end of March. I have been trying to get Ascend to release driver source code to me seeing as how the card is supposedly going out of production. No word on this yet. If anyone is interested in speeding things up while I'm bogged down, please feel free to contact me. - Bruce ======================================================================== || Bruce M. I can currently recommend one of the following cards (the order is not relevant), all ISA, non-PnP: AVM A1, AVM Fritz!Card, Creatix ISDN-S0, Teles S0/16, Teles 16.3 (NOT 16.3c, it has a different chipset!), 3Com USRobotics Sportster ISDN TA internal - i have tested each one with isdn4bsd under FreeBSD. The PnP versions of these cards are unsupported under FreeBSD although i currently have a Creatix PnP running under FreeBSD on a machine where the BIOS has initialized the card. The AVM Fritz!Card PnP is unsupported. The Niccy GO@ is also PnP and as such unsupported, also the driver has still to be debugged. Ah, yes, I've had this problem, too. Occasionally, when i4b hangs up the phone, it somehow interferes with any phone call on the isdn line. Symptoms are as you describe: I can hear the other guy allright, but he cannot understand me. This even affects any phone call that's happening on the other B-channel at the time of the i4b-hangup :-(. Incidently, I did have the exact same problem with early versions of gerdes' powercapi when using w95. Newer versions of this software seem to have fixed this problem (at least I haven't seen it in quite a while now). The AVM Fritz!Card PnP is unsupported. Hmm. PnP is not unsupported under FreeBSD any more. At least an NE2000 (ed) PnP card got configured on my non PnP-BIOS with the PnP-support in FreeBSD-current and FreeBSD-2.2-stable. (which will be FreeBSD-2.2.6 soon). So this might also work for the PnP ISDN cards. But this has not been tested well (I don't have any PnP ISDN cards). Any trials and reports are very much welcome! And if it doesn't work for some PnP card, it's probably just a typo and easy to fix. It'll be changed to the proper address during PPP connection. At least that's how I'd expect it to work, but I am wrong :-(. If I supply a wrong destination address, my side won't accept the destination address supplied by the destination host. This is not a big problem, since you usually know the fix IP address of the other side, only the address of your side is not fixed. I think, there is a patch of phk to ifpppsubr.c that handles this problem. This might be merged into the next version of i4b. Once it gets incorporated you can *not* supply just any old address for the ISP's end. You MUST give him 0.0.0.1 if you want his address to be dynamically assigned. It's all explained in the sppp manpage. I suggest looking at the isdn4bsd FAQ. I put an entry in it explaining how to go about getting sPPP working. Several more or less severe bugs were fixed and several enhancements have been added, please have a look at the ChangeLog for details. FreeBSD users, to get the new syncPPP files installed please run the uninstall.sh and install.sh scripts (in that order) located in the FreeBSD directory; NetBSD users please make shure they are installed (if_sppp.h and if_spppsubr.c). There is a sppp.4 man page available now which doesn't get installed yet. I'd like to thank everyone who gave us feedback! Heres how to access the ftp site: The ISDN4BSD package is available from: isdn4bsd@ftp.consol.de/pub -------------------------- you have to log in as user isdn4bsd -------- and give your mail address as the password. Then change to the "pub" directory. Anonymous ftp as user "ftp" or "anonymous" will NOT (!) give the desired result ! This is because the driver tries to mirror the FSM built into the ISAC chip. If the FSM is switching to fast some intermediate transitions might not be reported to the driver. The last transition then makes the driver think something bad has happened. This patch takes this into account. I surely hope this to be the last change in i4b_l1fsm.c for a while. If anyone sees something illegal in layer 1 *or* if you see a loop of TEI-ID requests and timeouts after applying this patch please report. This diff is against i4b-00.50 from March 13th.
