I haven't tested it much on -current, though. Hi ! I wanted to give altq a try on my FreeBSD-current machine, where I run the kernel with SMP, CAM, softupdates and i4b (isdn "4" bsd). The machine is my home internet gateway using a passive Teles ISDN card (64 KBit), which connects to the Cisco Router of my ISP. Authentication is PAP. After installing the new altq kernel I can't connect to my ISP anymore, the connection will be established and disconnected very rapidly. It's the first time, I install altq. So I have no major number problem or such. I followed the installation instructions and used the update kit for FreeBSD-current. I copied the additional files in net and netinet into the kernel subdir. At this time I have no altq serverice daemon up and running. I only wanted to boot with the fresh altq kernel. I compared the debugging output of a kernel with and without altq patches. I see that there is an authentication problem, but I'm not that experienced in debugging a PPP connection at startup. Maybe you or the isdn developer see what happens more quickly. In the attachement I send my kernel config file and the kernel messages ... I turned on debugging in i4b ... I send a copy to freebsd-isdn as well to reach the i4b hackers. -- Andreas Klemm http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/~andreas What gives you 90% more speed, for example, in kernel compilation ? http://www.FreeBSD.ORG/~fsmp/SMP/akgraph-a/graph1.html "NT = Not Today" (Maggie Biggs) ``powered by FreeBSD SMP'' --2oS5YaxWCcQjTEyO Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="i4b.normal" normal i4b kernel ================= Aug 10 10:51:15 titan /kernel: Copyright (c) 1992-1998 FreeBSD Inc. I have been able to do this using ppp (interface tun0) with no problems, however natd does not work correctly with isd4nbsd and a dynamic IP address. The problem is that natd does not detect when the IP address of interface isppp0 changes. I am running natd with the -dynamic option, which means it is supposed to detect a change in IP address on the interface. It does detect this change with ppp and tun0, but not with isdn4bsd and isppp0. I have run natd with the -v verbose option to see what is happening, and saw the following: ------------------------------------------------ [I have forced isppp0 to connect to the net by pinging an IP, I then run natd:] bpiserver1:/usr/local# natd -dynamic -n isppp0 -v Out [ICMP] 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 aliased to 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 In [ICMP] 158.152.1.222 -> 193.149.75.48 aliased to 158.152.1.222 -> 193.149.75.48 Out [ICMP] 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 aliased to 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 In [ICMP] 158.152.1.222 -> 193.149.75.48 aliased to 158.152.1.222 -> 193.149.75.48 [so far, so good. Now I "ifconfig isppp0 down ; ifconfig isppp0 up" to force the line to drop:] Routing message E received. Routing message E received. [Now I ping the IP address again, forcing isppp0 to reconnect] Out [ICMP] 0.0.0.0 -> 158.152.1.222 aliased to 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 Out [ICMP] 0.0.0.0 -> 158.152.1.222 aliased to 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 Out [ICMP] 193.149.70.237 -> 158.152.1.222 aliased to 193.149.75.48 -> 158.152.1.222 [natd does not realise that my IP address has changed, and thus changes all IP addresses to my old IP address. No packets will now reach me. I am forced to manually "kill -HUP natd"] ------------------------------------------------ Now I repeat the test using ppp and interface tun0. Most of the output is the same, however when my IP address changes, natd is aware of it: ------------------------------------------------ Routing message 2 received. Routing message D received. Routing message C received. Interface address has changed. Routing message 1 received. Routing message 2 received. Routing message 2 received. Routing message 2 received. Routing message 2 received. Routing message 2 received. Routing message 1 received. ------------------------------------------------ >From the man page of natd: -dynamic If the -n or -interface option is used, natd will monitor the routing socket for alterations to the interface passed. If the interfaces IP number is changed, natd will dynamically alter its concept of the alias address. Therefore I presume that isdn4bsd is not notifying the system of the change in IP address in the same way that ppp does? Is this a bug? I am afraid I am not a coder, so I cannot myself look through the source to see the reason for this problem. If anyone else has the time to investigate this for me - perhaps I am doing something wrong? - I would be most appreciative. One workaround solution I did think of would be to simply call a "killall -HUP natd" every time isdnd connected. Is it possible to tell isdnd to execute a command every time it makes a call? Obviously this is not a very good solution, but it would solve the problem if this is a genuine bug that needs time to fix (I wish I could help do it myself!) Keep up the good work with isdn4bsd! Thanks in advance, Tom Jobbins. I wanted to give ALTQ a try after the announcement in the FreeBSD-net mailinglist. See: http://www.csl.sony.co.jp/person/kjc/software.html To get an ALTQ kernel running is really simple. - I only had to get the upgrade kit for -current (it contains alse the diffs for 2.2.7) ftp.csl.sony.co.jp:/pub/kjc/update-kit-1.1.1.tar.gz - and then the altq package itself ftp.csl.sony.co.jp:/pub/kjc/altq-1.1.1.tar.gz - then copy the whole sys tree to sys-altq and apply the patches from the update-kit there and copy the files from the net and netinet subdir to sys-altq/{net,netinet} - You only need the docu and daemon programs and the MAKEDEV.altq script from the ALTQ distribution (altq-1.1.1.tar.gz) Well, would be fine fine to give the package a try, but... BTW, there is a short howto, how to apply ALTQ support for a device. It looks really simple. Maybe one could integrate it into i4b without much trouble. After applying the ALTQ-1.1.1 diffs (without rejects) from the kernel update-kit I could build and install a new kernel with ALTQ support. After reading the fine manual I created the needed devices in /dev and rebooted. During startup my machine usually dials my ISP, because named is fired up and I'm using ntpdate at boot. The machine tried to dial in, but the connect didn't happen and i4b keeps on dialing and dialing until I unplugged the wire to safe some money ;-) I enabled debugging in the rc.isdn script and noticed some differences during the lcp phase, but don't get the clue what's going wrong exactly. I attach the two sessions from /var/log/messages with and without ALTQ patches applied and my kernel config file in the hope it's useful. Well, started over freshly: - checked out current of today - applied CAM patches - applied ALTQ patches finally installed i4b, which replaces the above mentioned net/if_spppsubr.c. I made sure, that the version of net/if_spppsubr.c were the ones from the i4b package, though this is made sure, as I installed i4b as the very last thing ... i4b moves the original files to filename-BACKUP, so I could easily check, that the i4b version is "active". It looks like your isppp0 is not configured for authentication. At least if_spppsubr.c thinks so. Do you still have the /sys/net/if_spppsubr.c version from i4b, or is it overwritten by altq? After my ISP decided to switch to PPP only, I had to move from bisdn with raw HDLC to i4b with sppp. Installation was a breeze, I was pleasantly surprised with the bisdn torture still fresh in mind. My configuration: 486 PC running FreeBSD 2.2.6-RELEASE, Teles 16.3 non-PnP card, i4b 0.63. The problem we are now experiencing is that isdnd does not hang up after idletime because there is constant lcp echo traffic between the ppp server on the isp's side and isppp. The debug output from isppp0 shows Aug 12 09:50:43 firewall /kernel: isppp0: lcp input(opened): Aug 12 09:50:44 firewall /kernel: isppp0: got lcp echo req, sending echo rep Aug 12 09:50:44 firewall /kernel: isppp0: lcp output every ten seconds. Corresponding to this tcpdump -i isppp0 gives 11:15:58.249799 [|ip] 11:15:58.249859 [|ip] I have read the recent discussion of this in the list archives, but there was no solution mentioned. I suspect that if isdnd is responsible for the hangup timeout, it should ignore these packets, or alternatively the timeout should be handled by isppp. Any ideas? Thanks, Guido -- Guido von Walter . Can you send me a trace and the syslog/isdnd log output for the CRC errors ? Anyway, these CRC errors must not occur and are an indication of something wrong or at least strange occuring from the S0 plug of your card towards the exchange you are connected to.
