This device (a PCI ISDN card) does _not_ have a HSCX in the normal manner of speaking. Most of the HSCX functions are handled by the PCI ISAC, the rest (HDLC decoding) has to be done in software. At the moment, I just want to get the 'D' channel signalling working [as a first step], but firstly I need to know how much of the HSCX code has to be implemented to allow this. Since the ISAC doesn't at all resemble a 82525 et al, I'm probably going to have to emulate it at the register level, and that (may?) be a lot of work. I think I may only have to do the HSCX interrupt control and version stuff for 'D' but I may be very wrong. Can anyone tell me ? You need HDLC before anything else, the D channel runs on HDLC and LAPB. You should probably not bother with emulating the HSCX at all, rather try to provide the functions at the right level of the stack in isdn4bsd. You should be able to find some LAPB code if you look in the 'sys/netccitt' directory of a 2.2.X release (probably have to go back to 2.2.2 or so) or you can resurrect it from the dead using a CVS tree. -- Poul-Henning Kamp FreeBSD coreteam member phk@FreeBSD.ORG "Real hackers run -current on their laptop." The 'classic' Siemens-chipset cards (Teles, AVM etc) contain: - HSCX (SAB8525). This is a dual-channel HDLC controller, used to receive the B channels only. It demultiplexes the two channels under the control of timing strobes from the ISAC. It also has a non-HDLC mode, where it simply acts as a FIFO for bytes of raw B channel data (byte timing being supplied by the ISAC again). Raw mode is used for voice applications, HDLC mode is used for IP (if they were ever implemented in I4B, V.110 would use raw mode and V.120 would use HDLC mode). - ISAC (PEB2085). This handles the clock recovery and mux/demux for the ISDN S-bus, and also has an HDLC controller (very similar register-wise to one half of the HSCX) for receiving the D channel. So, if your card really has no hardware support for HDLC on the B channels, it is going to be _very_ inefficient for handling IP: although the HDLC 'protocol' is quite simple, and CRC-16 can be implemented quite efficiently by table look-up, doing the zero-bit insertion/deletion in software would use a lot of CPU. If there is hardware HDLC for the B channels but not for the D channel, that would require just the same development effort but would have a much less serious impact on performance since the average data rate on the D channel is extremely low. It may seem to unbelievable (but it's true) that it's the opposite way. There is hardware support for decoding the D channel but not for the B channels. As far as the software is concerned, the ASIC is transparent for the B's in that it just passes through whatever it receives from the ISAC. [Note that in my original message I said 'PCI ISAC', but this was a typo; I meant PCI ASIC. It does the PCI glue functions and also implements the D channel decoding etc. The ISAC is an ordinary Siemens PSB2186.] As there's a Linux driver for this card in existance the FreeBSD version should not (I hope) be a major problem to get working, but I am stepping carefully as I am not an experienced Unix device driver type person. -- Chris To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Thu Oct 1 06:48:22 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA20054 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 06:48:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from theory.cs.uni-bonn.de (theory.cs.uni-bonn.de [131.220.4.161]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA19995 for ; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 06:48:08 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ignatios@theory.cs.uni-bonn.de) Received: from cauchy.cs.uni-bonn.de (cauchy.cs.uni-bonn.de [131.220.4.169]) by theory.cs.uni-bonn.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA28867; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 15:45:50 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (ignatios@localhost) by cauchy.cs.uni-bonn.de (8.8.8/8.6.9) id PAA24853; Thu, 1 Oct 1998 15:45:49 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <19981001154548.C24738@cs.uni-bonn.de> Date: Thu, 1 Oct 1998 15:45:48 +0200 From: Ignatios Souvatzis To: Hallam Oaks P/L list account , "freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG" Cc: Andrew Gordon Subject: Re: HSCX query Mail-Followup-To: Hallam Oaks P/L list account , "freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG" , Andrew Gordon References: <199810011335.XAA27382@mail.aussie.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.91.2i In-Reply-To: <199810011335.XAA27382@mail.aussie.org>; from Hallam Oaks P/L list account on Thu, Oct 01, 1998 at 11:36:23PM +1000 Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Thu, Oct 01, 1998 at 11:36:23PM +1000, Hallam Oaks P/L list account wrote: > >software would use a lot of CPU. You _need_ HDLC for the D-channel protocols. You only need HDLC for B-channels, if you use HDLC-base protocols. Voice data are transmitted raw, so you don't need HDLC necessarily. But right know with the same configuration as i had in 2.2.5, the kenel doesn't detect my isdn card. I have a Teles 16.3. My kernel, or the generic one says in the boot isic0 not found at 0xd80. I tried several irq, and several address, but nothing. With the 2.2.5 i had configured at 0xd80 and irq 12 and it was working very well. As anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance .... Sometimes the i4b system gets into a state where it's constantly trying to write to the card, failing, then retrying, apparently indefinately, even though the controlling process has been killed. Is there any simple way to reset the entire i4b subsystem to the state in which it was when the system first booted (or close enough to it) ? Currently I'm just rebooting but that's getting tiresome :( -- Chris To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Fri Oct 2 05:25:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA16136 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Fri, 2 Oct 1998 05:25:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from www.scancall.no (www.scancall.no [195.139.183.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id FAA16117 for ; Fri, 2 Oct 1998 05:25:02 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Marius.Bendiksen@scancall.no) Received: from super2.langesund.scancall.no [195.139.183.29] by www with smtp id ITRDNNSK; Fri, 02 Oct 98 12:24:42 GMT (PowerWeb version 4.04r6) Message-Id: <3.0.5.32.19981002141949.00952770@mail.scancall.no> X-Sender: Marius@mail.scancall.no X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.5 (32) Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 14:19:49 +0200 To: "Hallam Oaks P/L list account" From: Marius Bendiksen Subject: Re: i4b reset ? But I'm very satisfied with it. It runs very good under Win95 (in kinds of disorder of my) Warp4. If You finish the development of the driver I would be glad to test it. I'm running a new installed 2.2.6 (CD-ROM from Wallnut Creek). Yesterday I tried to install the i4b (I didn't read the README) and I get an error code during make install. There was an path not present to erase. But I think this was not an major error.
