Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 13:09:39 -0500 From: William McVey Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I've done a brief scan through the i4b documentation but couldn't find a conclusive answer to whether or not the i4b drivers will solve my need. I have an ISDN line connected to via an NT1 (National Telecom) switch in Memphis TN, US. I have a 3COM/USR Sportster ISDN card and I plan on upgrading my FreeBSD system to the recently release 3.0-release (although this isn't absolutly necessary). I would like to connect to NT RAS boxes (bletch) as well as Ascend ISDN boxes which are running generic PPP over ISDN. Additionally, it would be ideal if I could use one B channel to keep a semi-permanent connection to an internet ISP, for my home network access. I would like to use the other B channel to connect to work as needed, and when not in use to connect to work, it'd be nice to be able to bond to the other channel to the ISP. Currently I have to boot to Windows when I need to use ISDN (double bletch) and it only accepts one remote connection at a time. >From my brief review of the documentation, it appeared that the i4b package appears to be focused on the European ISDN standards. This impression of mine has been reenforced by the fact that most of the email addresses I've seen coming across this list appear to be of European orgin. I know the NT1 switch is listed as being supported, but I didn't know if there were other differences between European ISDN and US ISDN that would cause problems. I was hoping someone on this list could conclusivly state one way or the other whether what I'm hoping to do is currently possible. -- William P.S. I know this is probably a newbie type of question, but I did "lurk" on the mailing list for a while and have done some search against the mailing list archives and didn't find any hits which answered this question. I recently bought (and installed) the complete FreeBSD from walnut creek (2.2.7 release). Of course, I'd like to have a proper connection to the internet with FreeBSD. I downloaded and installed i4b, in order to be able to use a TELES BRI 16.3-adapter. I'm having difficulty configuring i4b. When trying to run isdnd, I get error messages with 'permission denied'. If I change to root (with su), I get error messages with 'Command not Found'. I guess (and hope) I overlooked just one small thing, but after spending hours reading the documentation, I can't seem to find it. I copied the sample file isdnd.rc to /etc/isdn/isdnd.rc, and modified with proper telephone numbers, etc. Also, i copied the rc.isdn-PPP to /etc/rc.isdn and modified it with isp-specifications (pap, author.name, etc.). Both files have user, group and other executable set. What am I missing? AFAI can tell, using the ps command, there is no daemon called isdnd running from system startup. I normally don't log in as root, but a 'normal' user and then use su to 'become' root. Should I log in as root to get isdnd running? >It sounds that your path is not including isdnd when you have su'ed >to root. Give the complete path and look into /etc/rc.isdn to see >how isdnd is started. isdnd is located in /usr/local/bin. This directory is in both my 'normal' path and the path of root. I did not change the lines in the sample rc.isdn that start isdnd (these lines include the right path). I did comment out, however, the lines that configure ipr0. I'm confused about whether I need it or not (since the comment says 'always allow incoming calls' and I don't want to allow incoming calls, I just want to dial out to my ISP). If I do need the ipr-lines, what ip-addresses do I put in, since my ISP uses dynamic adressing on both sides (well, his side is not really dynamic of course, but he says I don't have to fill it in). Can I use: ifconfig ipr0 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 ifconfig ipr0 down and then let the negotiation fill in the IP-adresses? I assume, that in that case I will also have to make an entry for ipr0 in isdnd.rc . Right now, I only have one entry in isdnd.rc and its for isppp0 (much like the PPP-example). Again, because of the comment 'i call back the remote end' and I don't want to enable call back, I commented out the 'IP over ISDN' entries. I greatly doubt that your ISP supports transparent HDLC since that mandates that he assign you a static IP address. BTW the second address (the one for your ISP) MUST be either 0.0.0.1 (for dynamic allocation) or your ISP's known IP address. --- Gary Jennejohn Home - garyj@muc.de Work - garyj@fkr.dec.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Wed Oct 21 20:41:41 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id UAA21410 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 20:41:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from uni-sb.de (uni-sb.de [134.96.252.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id UAA21401 for ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 20:41:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rock@cs.uni-sb.de) Received: from cs.uni-sb.de (cs.uni-sb.de [134.96.252.31]) by uni-sb.de (8.9.0/1998052000) with ESMTP id FAA06131 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 05:41:08 +0200 (CEST) Received: from cs.uni-sb.de (acc2-189.telip.uni-sb.de [134.96.112.189]) by cs.uni-sb.de (8.9.0/1998060300) with ESMTP id FAA25401 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 05:41:07 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <362EA993.C649EDCA@cs.uni-sb.de> Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 05:42:11 +0200 From: Daniel Rock X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [de] (Win98; U) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Sedlbauer Winspeed and 3.0-current Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, recently I got all sorts of problems trying to reconfigure my 3.0-current system. They seem all to be related to the PnP code in i4b. Here is my horror story in detail: I just wanted to remove some unused options and drivers in my bloated custom kernel. After removing them, the machine hung just before the Probing for devices on the ISA bus: (just after the PnP probe, but the kernel didn't find "isic1"). Only after re-enabling device pcm0 (Luigi's sound code), the PnP probe succeded (the isic1 device showed up), just to the point where the machine rebootet immediately after displaying Probing for devices on the ISA bus: I re-enabled some more options and devices and found out I had to enable *both* IPFIREWALL and IPFILTER to make the machine work again (I haven't tried IPFILTER alone, though, because I need the divert-sockets) If I compile an working kernel as ELF, the boot process stops again during the PnP probe. Therefor I hacked the i4b source. The patch below allows you to use the winspeed card without the PnP code. You can now configure your card as usual: options "SEDLBAUER" device isic0 at isa? port 0x100 net irq 10 flags 0x18 vector isicintr (no I4B_PNP) Beware: The port and irq value aren't really probed. You may have to boot "-c" and set the PnP configuration manually: pnp 1 0 enable os port0 0x100 irq0 10 (if this is the only PnP card) Did anybody else had similar problems with a recent -current and PnP ISDN cards? No. This is what PnP should do. Not using PnP is not an option for this card. PnP support will be improved in the next I4B snapshot. (remember this is experimental code ;) BTW: if you read the mailing list, you should know that you need another dummy isic0 device for the currently available i4b snap to get you running with the sedlbauer card. The pnp code wants to attach the card as isic1 but this is out of range if your config contains only one isic device ( and the old i4b code doesn't check this ). This will be fixed in the next snapshot. > You may have to boot "-c" and set the PnP configuration manually: > pnp 1 0 enable os port0 0x100 irq0 10 (if this is the only PnP card) Yes this is how to do it. But you could also use USERCONFIG(_BOOT) and /kernel.config for this . ( don't know if the new boot loader supports this.) Summary: 1) use PnP 2) use boot -c 3) have two isic0 devices and everything should be alright without removing the PnP code. -- German Tischler tanis@gaspode.franken.de Apple eaten (core dumped) tanis@cip.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Thu Oct 22 06:34:10 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA01086 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 06:34:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from alvman.RoBIN.de (alvman.robin.de [193.174.7.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA01075 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 06:34:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ah@alvman.RoBIN.de) Received: from localhost (ah@localhost) by alvman.RoBIN.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA00749; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 15:33:10 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ah@alvman.RoBIN.de) Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 15:33:10 +0200 (CEST) From: Andreas Haakh To: Gary Jennejohn cc: "Fam. van Achterberg" , freebsd-isdn Subject: Re: When running i4b error: permission denied or command not found In-Reply-To: <199810212028.WAA16099@peedub.muc.de> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8BIT Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Wed, 21 Oct 1998, Gary Jennejohn wrote: > "Fam. van Achterberg" writes: > >AFAI can tell, using the ps command, there is no daemon called isdnd running > >from system startup. Indeed, after invoking rc.isdn from /etc/rc.local the isdnd runs at system startup. >you can log in as root and just invoke /etc/rc.isdn by hand. I also figured out that, since root has csh as default shell, I need to put 'sh' before the command /etc/rc.isdn, when i invoke it by hand. >ipr requires static addresses. Maybe you really want to use isppp0 here ? >I greatly doubt that your ISP supports transparent HDLC since that mandates >that he assign you a static IP address. Yes, I want to use isppp0. But the man pages for spppcontrol say that the only way to dial out is to get a command from ipr0? That's why I thought for a moment that I needed ipr0. Anyway, I have the system running now, and I can make a connection with my ISP. (one other thing that I needed to do, BTW, was to make an extra device node, ttyv6, without a getty, for the isdn-monitor). The only problem left is that i have to type in the ip adresses, since there is apparently no name resolution. Should I use named when I have no local name server, but have to rely on the ISP's name servers? I'd like to thank everyone who helped me. I know the last question isn't really a topic for this (isdn) list, but if you have the answer, don't hesitate to mail me! That's the easiest way to handle it. You can also use a caching named, but that requires more effort (you have to generate a /etc/namedb/named.boot file).
