You probably don't want it if you're gonna be using php3. but just for reference my SERVER_SOFTWARE variable reads: Apache/1.3.1 (Unix) mod_perl/1.15 PHP/3.0.3 mod_ssl/2.0.7 SSLeay/0.9.0b hmm.. mod_ssl should be 2.09, perhaps Ralf forgot to change it. I started doing this 4 years ago, and I'm still doing it. It's easy to hack apache to chroot itself into /chrootdir/192.168.1.1. Note that you'll need to start a separate instance of apache for each VWS. It's also easy to hack inetd to use getsockname(2) to find out the local IP address and chroot in the child before execing telnetd or ftpd. This is getting to be a FAQ. Maybe I should write a Handbook section on it.... We surely do not want people to be making money by re-distributing (selling) our work... See http://www.freebsd.org/ports > 3) there are no diffs, each release is self-contained and stands > by itself, once we release, the old version is considered obsolete But this release has a certain name and needs perhaps other local diffs to make it into /usr/local ... and it has perhaps other installed files, so the ports PLIST file needs certainly an update, which is needed to install and remove ported software cleanly. > If there are no legal entanglements (I'm not a lawyer!), then I > think having the FreeBSD "port" reference our FTP site would be > fine. I want to run SSL-enabled Apache in my FreeBSD boxes, but I found some problems when searching for suitable software: 1. SSLeay certificates are not automatically recognized by most browsers, and I don't want my potential users to see a scary warning when entering my site. 2. Raven is available only for sites located in the U.S. and Canada, which is not my case (my site will be located in Guatemala). Any ideas? Can I get certificates from Verisign, Tawthe, etc., for a foreign site? If so, which server do they support? I am rather newbie with those matters... sorry for asking too many questions. We don't sell the add on software. The FreeBSD CD-ROM is so damn cheap that you can't speak of selling your software. It costs about $50. And the ports collection contains in the meantime 1700+ ports. The ports collection only is the Makefile mechanism. So your software stays on your ftp server. Only if an end user decides to use your software within the Copyright, he can use the ports collection to assist in how to get it fetched, extracted, compiled and run. Each release of the Merit AAA Server has "a name" -- more properly a version number. It needs no local diffs -- it compiles/links/runs just fine on FreeBSD. We're needing to support FTP PUTs, so squid won't work (even if it wasn't for browsers, not command line FTP programs). We're about to be using FreeBSD for a firewall for IRIX machines, and the Socks version 4, as well as not being supported currently (or at least not well supported), doesn't work right on IRIX. I've asked on the Socks mailing list about this problem, and the only reply I got was to go to the (restrictively copyrighted) version of Socks 5. Incidentally, if there's one out there that'll do well, I'm willing to try making the proxy server portion of it into a port. The local diffs are not so much you software itself, it is just where the software installs. The default on FreeBSD is /usr/local. But a person might choose /opt. He can set that global. The patches in the port basicly take care of changing the Makefile of your software and any source files which maybe have hard coded file names. The 1.2 version, albeit less stable than the 1.1 version, is improved in this respect, such as via replacing sprintf with snprintf. Tried jps.net and I am going to drop them tonight. They not only don't support V90, but everything is very slow. Many times the modem just sits and waits. Also have had connection and dropout problems. Since trying them 5 days ago there has not been a day I didn't have to dial ibm.net What I want: -Acces in 212 or 718 -V90 -Good performance -Reasonable newsfeed. Don't care for quantity of newsgroups. What I do care is that if I see 100 messages in a news provider I have and see 5 on the ISP news server and a simmilar trends goes on every day then this is not acceptable. This is one of my biggest complaints against ibm.net I am not on the list so please reply directly. Later one I may want static IP and perhaps run a mail/news server for home. If you have either or both (static ip or a reasonable price for running a 56K permanent link) this would be a big plus. We use several machines as PPP dialin servers. My script checks for multiple logins across the various machines, and then kills ALL logins with prejudice 8). It requires that you configure .rhosts to allow rsh to operate between the dialin machines (probably a potential security problem I guess). But at present, getting in to a dialin machine will not let you then get in to any of our more important machines, we use `ssh' for that. Anyway, if you are interested, I can send you a copy of the script. brian On Thu, 17 Sep 1998, Jean M. Once we have the various backup.tgz files from the servers, we dump all of them to a Windows box which has our autoloader and then the backup become part of our daily batch which is no problem. If you need to connect from the windows machine, it might be easier to implement something this way. On the machine you're backing up type this command from a root shell. socket -p "tar -czf - -C /" -s 12345 To retrieve the backup type socket localhost 12345 > remote.host.tar.gz Or you could write a short perl script using IO::Socket::INET to do the job, which might get around this instance of the awkwardness of using windows. Do look into other approaches. A .tar.gz file might be easier to extract files from using windows if that's important, but otherwise you'd be better to use dump so you get incremental backups. By dump'ing to stdout you can use this exactly like tar in the above examples, meaning that your windows machine doesn't need to know anything about dump. I haven't looked at Amanda (see ports), but for backing up a whole network of servers it's probably worth a look.
