Thus, any such shell would either need to be invoked by root or would need to be setuid root. The former would not seem to be a useful exercise. The latter, though tricky, may be doable; you would need to write your own program which would set up the chroot'ed environment, perform the chroot, and then relinquish root privileges irrevocably. I have also added #include to aiops.c because it needs struct sched_param. When it comes to the link stage, I get aiops.o: In function `aio_init': /usr/local/src/squid-2.0/src/aiops.c(.text+0x28): undefined reference to `pthread_attr_setscope' /usr/local/src/squid-2.0/src/aiops.c(.text+0x49): undefined reference to `pthread_setschedparam' /usr/local/src/squid-2.0/src/aiops.c(.text+0x62): undefined reference to `pthread_attr_setschedparam' which all seem to be phantoms. The only places they are called are in aio_init, which is only called once. The code is pthread_attr_init(&globattr); pthread_attr_setscope(&globattr, PTHREAD_SCOPE_SYSTEM); globsched.sched_priority = 1; main_thread = pthread_self(); pthread_setschedparam(main_thread, SCHED_OTHER, &globsched); globsched.sched_priority = 2; pthread_attr_setschedparam(&globattr, &globsched); and then a whole lot of thread creation. I have tried commenting this stuff out which allows it to compile and link successfully, but when it is started it gets stuck and fails to start the dnsserver processes. Has anyone here managed to get it to work? If not, is there anyone here who knows how to make it work? Any help gratefully received. This utility is pretty handy for starting up daemons in their own chrooted jail, but it's not very convenient to use chrootuid for user logins. The painful part is that chrootuid needs to be invoked as root and needs the desired uid and chroot directory as arguments. This means that you'd need to write a wrapper for it in order to use it as the login shell in /etc/passwd, and set the uid to 0 in /etc/passwd. Wu-ftpd can be configured to automagically chroot certain users by adding a "/./" in the middle of the path to their home directory to specify the chroot directory. I'd prefer a tweak to /usr/bin/login to do the same thing. Increasing maxusers will increase mbuf clusters something like (512 + (maxusers * 16)) which is 8704 -- kind of high. Each mbuf cluster takes 2k so with 8704 mbuf clusters you are using 16 meg plus, and there is only 32 meg of kvm. Increasing maxusers will cause other kernel data structures besides mbuf clusters to grow (those need kvm too), so you may want to shrink maxusers down and twiddle with "options NMBCLUSTERS=xxxxx" in your kernel config file. If you have a lot of processes running (a thousand or so) you may want to search the archives for the patches David Greenman applied to wcarchive (requires a buildworld). Watch the mbuf cluster usage with a "netstat -m" and see if it gets around 8000. That is really kind of high. My squid box get 14 new connections a second and it rarely gets above 1000. All UPSes (UPSii) are not alike. The industrial units have some pretty severe power conditioning. At one time there was a distinction between a UPS and a Battery Backup - the latter only being a switch over circuit. High end units will ensure a constant exact power output, highly filtered and reliable. The best of them actually run the systems off of a converted AC to DC - so they appear - electrically at least - to be running from a battery - a device which has no spikes, and a very even output. Any NIS clients that use crypt() should have encryption configured the same was the the NIS servers. If you don't do this, then software that does the canonical "read a username, read the password for that user, do a getpwnam for that username, do a crypt() on the typed-in password, and compare the two" will fail. This happens because an NIS client doing getpwnam() will in fact fetch the password file entry from the NIS server, and the format of the password returned by crypt() on the local machine will not be the same as that returned by the server. This cost me some hair pulling trying to figure out why a newly installed Radius server was rejecting logins that were perfectly legitimate. If you're running the version of ppp that comes with FreeBSD-2.2.5, it's a known problem (see the ERRATA.TXT file on www.FreeBSD.org). You can either upgrade your version of FreeBSD (it was fixed before 2.2.6 was released) or you could upgrade your version of ppp via http://www.Awfulhak.org/ppp.html If you upgrade ppp, make sure you glance through the README.changes file. You should probably re-browse the man page too as a lot of things have changed (but not too much WRT your configuration). > Thanks in advance. > > Mukti A. I recently needed to permit user logins to a chrooted environment and so I whipped up a small wrapper program that runs suid root, sets up the jail, drops root priv.'s permanently, and then executes a shell within the jail. See http://www.eq.net/software/chrsh.html for more info. It was written on and for my own FreeBSD box. Why should you not raise it above 12,288? What evidence do you have to support that? This is an issue near to my heart, so I would appreciate any details you can provide. I do agree however that leaving maxusers at 512 and increasing NMBCLUSTERS is the answer. IIRC, with maxusers at 512 there are around 8,000 mbuf clusters, so something higher than that would be the place to start. Doug -- *** Chief Operations Officer, DALnet IRC network *** Go PADRES! We run a small ISP with multiple FreeBSD servers providing all of our services. Four systems provide most of our essential services (such as DNS, Mail, and Radius authenticaiton). I'm wanting to come up with an effective way to 'mirror' drives across servers. The solution we should use, IMO, is RAID, but that's been shot down... so we're attempting to come up with an 'alternative'. Let's say we have servers A, B, C and D on the same ethernet segment like so: A---B---C---D What I would like to do is place spare drives in each server... So each system would have the drive(s) it needs for normal operation, plus a drive it isn't using... Then A and B could cross-mirror and C and D could do the same... So if any drive fails, I just hotswap from one server to the next (the idea being that if the mirror copy is across the network on another server, there's less chance of controller-related corruption - which happened to us once before). My question is, what's the best way to do something like this? I've thought about rdist, but have little-no experience in this area (I guess I'll have to become an rdist guru over the weekend - we all know the timeframes management gives us ;). What I'm basically hoping for is a brainstorming session... Either suggestions of something other than rdist to use (and hopefully some info about it) or effective ways to implement rdist. This sort of stuff tends to run with perl and or java, and your OS isn't going to be much of an issue. There's a bit of a range between CGI bulletting boards and JAVA clients for pretty much any system you want to put on a port on your machine, including things like irc and muds. Bullettin board type systems are better for browsing archives of previous discussions, but are slower to use, so they are less social in feel. they're suited to discussions among larger groups of people. For a more interactive chat system, you're probably best to use something along the lines of a MUD and put a java client program on your web page. Users have the option of using standalone software instead. Has anyone tried to get the Lambda MOO server going on FreeBSD I wonder? > Is there some reason why I wouldn't want a web-based chat? Most approaches to chat systems have potential security pitfalls. As with any software, do search the web and security archives for any security issues. The FAQ could be wrong. On my IRC box, I have my mbuf's at 17,000 actually. (you should find out what the max mbuf's it's gonna use with netstat -m at various intervals, then double that figure). And I remember seeing a post from DG saying something about ftp.cdrom.com having 80,000 mbufs.. The only maximum is the number that can fit in the kernel virtual memory. You could probably configure 15000 or more without much trouble, but going much beyond that will require changing the virtual memory layout in FreeBSD. With a changed kernel VM layout, the limits become much higher - wcarchive is configured for 80000 at the moment, for example, and will eventually be going to 160000 (required to support 10000 concurrent ftp users). -DG David Greenman Co-founder/Principal Architect, The FreeBSD Project To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Fri Oct 16 07:28:43 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA03804 for freebsd-isp-outgoing; Fri, 16 Oct 1998 07:28:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from toth.ferginc.com (toth.ferginc.com [205.139.23.69]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id HAA03797 for ; Fri, 16 Oct 1998 07:28:36 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from branson@FergInc.com) Received: (from mail@localhost) by toth.ferginc.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) id KAA20191; Fri, 16 Oct 1998 10:28:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: from belmakor.hq.ferg.com(172.16.74.60) via SMTP by toth.ferginc.com, id smtpd020184; Fri Oct 16 10:27:57 1998 Received: (from branson@localhost) by belmakor.hq.ferg.com (8.8.8/8.8.7) id KAA00508; Fri, 16 Oct 1998 10:27:57 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <19981016102756.A411@belmakor.hq.ferg.com> Date: Fri, 16 Oct 1998 10:27:56 -0400 From: Branson Matheson To: mike@seidata.com, freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Mirrored Servers Reply-To: Branson.Matheson@FergInc.com References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.1i In-Reply-To: ; from mike@seidata.com on Thu, Oct 15, 1998 at 05:15:03PM -0400 Organization: Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. I was hoping it would be gone by the time -RELEASE came out. The linker can't find some of what it needs in a *.a library, even though it is likely there. You can change the order of how the *.o files are archived in the *.a library and it will affect what references are unresolved. I think the problem is in ranlib or ld, possible brought about by some a.out to elf transitioning. Maybe a post to hackers will get you more info. -- Barrett Richardson ratbert@aye.net On Sat, 17 Oct 1998, Paul Stewart wrote: > We just upgraded our main commerical web server to 3.0-RELEASE and > everything works like a dream except I can't compile apache-ssl for our > secure server... as it's compiling, I get the following from the SSLeahy > port... > > /bin/rm -f ssleay > gcc -o ssleay -DMONOLITH -I../include -DTERMIOS -DBN_ASM -DL_ENDIAN > -D_ANSI_SOUR > CE -DRSAref -fomit-frame-pointer -O3 -m486 -Wall -DSHA1_ASM -DMD5_ASM > -DRMD160_A > SM ssleay.o verify.o asn1pars.o req.o dgst.o dh.o enc.o gendh.o errstr.o > ca.o p > kcs7.o crl2p7.o crl.o rsa.o dsa.o dsaparam.o x509.o genrsa.o s_server.o > s_clie > nt.o speed.o s_time.o apps.o s_cb.o s_socket.o version.o sess_id.o > ciphers.o - > L. -L.. -L../.. -L../../.. -L/usr/local/lib -L.. -lssl -L.. -lcrypto > -lRSAglue - > lrsaref > speed.o: In function `speed_main': > speed.o(.text+0x135b): undefined reference to `RC4' > speed.o(.text+0x1465): undefined reference to `des_ncbc_encrypt' > speed.o(.text+0x1584): undefined reference to `des_ede3_cbc_encrypt' > speed.o(.text+0x18b5): undefined reference to `RC5_32_cbc_encrypt' > speed.o(.text+0x19c5): undefined reference to `BF_cbc_encrypt' > speed.o(.text+0x1ad5): undefined reference to `CAST_cbc_encrypt' > ../libcrypto.a(md5_dgst.o): In function `MD5_Update': > md5_dgst.o(.text+0x143): undefined reference to `md5_block_x86' > md5_dgst.o(.text+0x2e2): undefined reference to `md5_block_x86' > md5_dgst.o(.text+0x32f): undefined reference to `md5_block_x86' > > Then it goes into an > Stop. > *** Error code 1 > after about three screens full of undefined references... anyone have a > port that works of RSAREF by chance or is it something I've done wrong?? > > Thanks, > > Paul > > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Oct 17 19:14:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA20232 for freebsd-isp-outgoing; Sat, 17 Oct 1998 19:14:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from alpo.whistle.com (alpo.whistle.com [207.76.204.38]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA20177 for ; Sat, 17 Oct 1998 19:14:03 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from julian@whistle.com) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by alpo.whistle.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id TAA08969; Sat, 17 Oct 1998 19:08:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from current1.whistle.com(207.76.205.22) via SMTP by alpo.whistle.com, id smtpdJY8967; Sun Oct 18 02:08:50 1998 Date: Sat, 17 Oct 1998 19:08:47 -0700 (PDT) From: Julian Elischer To: Rowan Crowe cc: freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Multilink PPP daemon for FreeBSD - not mpd In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org mpd aint THAT bad.. anyhow, multilink has been added to user-land pp. (at least in -current) should work in 2.2.7 as well julian On Sun, 18 Oct 1998, Rowan Crowe wrote: > Hello all, > > I'm relatively new to this list so apologies in advance if this is a > frequently or recently asked question. > > Are there any solutions for multilink PPP for FreeBSD that don't involve > mpd? If you look through the >-current mailing list you would have seen why... A lot of the ports, and other >software have problems with ELF at the moment... Forshame Paul! One should have a test machine for such things. Only once after testing did an install botch things, but I was able to finish is less than 2 hours from when I started the upgrade. >I have problems with Apache myself - even if I go fetch the original (i.e. >don't compile a port)... With or without SSL? Haven't tested it much and don't need the SSL part, but it compiles clean on a system about 1 day prior to the release. My preference is to compile it myself, not the port. At least until I sort out the port, so that I get things were I want _and_ the install is clean. Not fond of the port's choices. >I've seen a few commit's for the ports & apache-ssl go through recently, if >you cvsup your ports collection to the latest - you might be lucky and be able >to compile the port of apache... There were Indeed, but none that I could see newer than 10/2 and to be sure I just did a cvsup of ports and apache13-modssl is unchanged since then (or my last sup 2 days ago). Interestingly there were a TON of deletes. Paul, did you upgrade the ports as well? If you did there may be one other option... One change was to remove the apache13-php3-modssl port, which appears to mean the the apache13-php3 _may_ work, as it does have a patches.modssl directory and a PLIST.modssl. The CVS commit and ports changes page are not clear. One could guess that if SSLeay is installed... Neat! A 'make all' brings up an options menu, so you do have an alternative. >Sorry I couldn't be more help... Maybe this will. Luck! To be fair, 3.0 has now been released, and you can't expect that everybody who's now thinking of installing to have been reading -current all this time. But yes, Karl's right. You don't want to move to 3.0 as if it will be a seamless migration. There's a lot of new stuff in there, and the ports have only partially been transferred. Doesn't your 2.2 version of apache-ssl work?
