I didn't have any particular ones in mind; it's just that past experience leads me to believe that it is an important datapoint. Particularly if some people duplicate your results and others don't. It's amazing how often such discrepancies turn out to be in something that everyone is taking for granted... (But only one time.) Under FreeBSD (running locally) it continues to do this many time, so I'm not sure what's causing this. There is definitely different behavior, but it still's jumps under Solaris. I don't have the ability to easily test it both running and display under Solaris though. For now, I'm considering it a 'buglet', which is not quite a bug, but neither should it be ignored. Details are available at http://www.freebsd.org/java. New to this release: * Process.waitFor() bug fixed * Multicast should work now * Non-blocking pipes blocked in 2.2.2, and now are (again) non-blocking. JDB should now work on 2.2.2 again. Bugs: * The new release *requires* XFree86 to be installed, even if you don't plan on using the AWT. This is due to Motif licensing restrictions, and will be resolved in a future JDK release. * There is a socket bug lurking that appears to be affecting all of the FreeBSD releases, but only affect certain people. It appears to be related to the network load, and only shows up under loaded/lossy networks. * There still appear to be bugs in 2.2.2 w/regards to non-blocking pipes/sockets, which may be related to the above bug. We're working on it, but wanted to get this release out the door to developers since the previous version is no longer available on the ftp site due to hardware problems. Any other details, check out the WWW page, which will be updated as new releases and other important news is released. - The FreeBSD-Java team To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Tue Feb 10 13:52:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA22310 for java-outgoing; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 13:52:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from iglou.com (exim@iglou1.iglou.com [192.107.41.3]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id NAA22295 for ; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 13:52:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from patrick@cre8tivegroup.com) Received: from gateway.cre8tivegroup.com [204.255.227.128] by iglou.com with esmtp (8.7.3/8.6.12) id 0y2Nat-0005jb-00; Tue, 10 Feb 1998 16:51:55 -0500 Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2 [p0] on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <199801291851.KAA02900@rah.star-gate.com> Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 16:51:55 -0500 (EST) Organization: The Creative Group From: Patrick Gardella To: Amancio Hasty Subject: Re: JDK 1.1.5 port for FreeBSD 2.2.x Cc: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, Nate Williams , (Java Port) Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Amancio, I ran all the example that came with NetComponents with no problems. Note that I am also running all my java apps on a remote X server (because my FreeBSD box doesn't have a graphics card). Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce this in a consistent way. It happens more often when I crazy-click(tm) my Swing app. On a related note, if I run all my swing apps using Alex Boisvert's jdk1.1.2 (ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/incoming/jdk1.1.2-fbsd1.tgz.good) not only I do not get this error, but all my apps run at a much better speed (almost twice as fast!!). Alex, if you are on this list, maybe you can see what are the main differences in implementing the VM code between your version and Nate's 1.1.5 ? Enrico. Though I don't immediately plan any Java programming myself, there is an app distributed internally here which requires the AWT under a web browser, and which I really want to be able to run under FreeBSD/XFree -- already works under OS/2, Macs, etc. My understanding is that in the recent past, the AWT part of the JDK was not working, and the announcement didn't specifically say. We can telnet to the FreeBSD machine and then FTP to freebsd.org and get any file easily. The HTTP protocol forces us to download the file to the NT machine (dialup speed) and then FTP it to our FreeBSD machine (another dialup speed). Using fetch(1) might help. Our solution was to use the HTTP protocol BUT we accessed it via telnet to port 80 from the FreeBSD machine. We issued the command GET to the HTTP server and sure enough the file was retrieved to our FreeBSD machine at no time. In the ancient past (what, 6 weeks ago ;) the JDK was compiled against LessTif, which caused most AWT programs to behave erratically. This was fixed in a prior release, and the current release also follows this practice. This is mentioned in the README.FreeBSD distributed with the JDK, and also would be apparent if you downloaded it and tried it out on your applet. :) Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Thu Feb 12 08:45:58 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA21407 for java-outgoing; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 08:45:58 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns.mt.sri.com (sri-gw.MT.net [206.127.105.141]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA21401 for ; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 08:45:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from nate@mt.sri.com) Received: from mt.sri.com (rocky.mt.sri.com [206.127.76.100]) by ns.mt.sri.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id JAA11681; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 09:44:35 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from nate@rocky.mt.sri.com) Received: by mt.sri.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id JAA04352; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 09:44:32 -0700 Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 09:44:32 -0700 Message-Id: <199802121644.JAA04352@mt.sri.com> From: Nate Williams MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: Johan Larsson Cc: Shalom Halevy , java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: http://www.freebsd.org/java/jdk1.1.5.V98-2-8.tar.gz via FTP? And plans are of getting a complete mirror of ftp.freebsd.org, we used to have this, but the mirrorprogram we had didn't work to well and there was some problem organising the disks. But it's > hopefully coming back soon :) Let me guess -- mirror.pl 2.8 ... ;-) That's why I started to write my own mirror program (in C), and now I'm desperately looking for beta testers. If you're interested, the latest version is available from this URL: http://fromme.com/omi/ The software is still declared "alpha", but it is running stable for some time on our own server (ftp7.de.freebsd.org), and a friend of mine is using it to build the complete (!) FreeBSD mirror at ftp.ru.freebsd.org. The only major feature still missing is exclude lists with regular expressions, but I'm working on that right now. And, yes, you might want to consider upgrading. Unfortunately, the following fix is unsupported: For earlier FreeBSD releases the following might work (it's been some time since I've tried this): ln -s /usr/lib/libc.so.2.2 \ /usr/local/jdk1.1.5/lib/i386/green_threads/libc.so.3.0 (This assumes that your version of libc in /usr/lib is libc.so.2.2, and that you've installed the JDK in /usr/local. My FreeBSD version is 2.1.0. Unfortunately, FreeBSD 2.1 is *NOT* supported by the JDK. However, you might be able to get a libc.so.3.0 from a recent 2.2 system and see if it works. You'll probably also need to get more recent X libraries. We (the java porters) have decided that since FreeBSD 2.1 is no longer 'supported' by FreeBSD, we aren't going to support it either. (It's simply a matter of available resources). I've got a 2.1 box myself (I'm typing on it as we speak), but unfortunately it's not going to run the JDK anytime soon, since it's too slow and too painful for me to try and make it work there. In short, you can *try* to make it work, or a better suggestion is to upgrade to a newer version of FreeBSD, like 2.2.5 or better yet 2.2.6 (soon to be out). I'd avoid upgrading to 3.X. Nate ps. Note the library version does not correspond to the FreeBSD version. Did you know that the FreeBSD java team has just released a new port of JDK 1.1.5 for FreeBSD? Check it out at It seems to run MUCH better than any other of the JDK ports I've seen. Your best bet is probably to get a 2.2.5 CD-ROM and upgrade. I must admit that I didn't do very much magic with JDK 1.1.2 for it to be faster. I mostly assembled patches from other people (Keith White, Jeffrey Hsu, the Linux folks, ...) I'm trying to follow this release of JDK 1.1.5 but I just can't keep up. I'm now working full time on a Java/Database product and also finishing my thesis during the remaining few hours. This is not a good period for me to devote time on this project but I promise to contribute when I get the time. I've released the patchkit of my JDK port to Nate, so if there's anything worth moving from JDK 1.1.2 to 1.1.5, Nate can probably help ;-) Regards, Alex.
