Huh? What do you mean by that? The same classes are used in both JD1.2 and the JFC1.0.1 release. > If the date is necessary, I'd prefer to see it added to java.vendor: > > "Sun Microsystems Inc., port by java-port@mt.sri.com 1998/02/08" > > and leave java.version: > > "1.1.5" The problem with this is people have to write a Java program to see which version of the program they are using. FWIW, all of the 3rd party vendors such as Linux and others do the same thing. But I noticed over lunch in the inside cover of this week's InfoWorld, there was a blurb on the Javasoft reorg and how the Freeware community might one-up them with reimplementations of their products. Anyway, here are the URLs they mentioned. http://www.hungry.com - Freeware Java Virtual Machine http://www.kore.org - Freeware Java class libs (suspect; at first glance, I didn't see them) May or may not be useful as an less restricted Mozilla JVM replacement. The reason is that I'm using IBM's jikes debugger. This one checks for the JDk version and refuses to work on versions prior to 1.1.5. A bit nasty because I always have to include a special command line option in order to make it work. Actually, the DIGITAL UNIX port of the jdk has a nifty feature - java -version returns "1.1.5", while java -fullversion returns something similar to our current version. Makes life a lot easier... So now I'm trying to install several java packages (e.g. Jogl, GL4Java, JavaCC) so I can begin the project I want to work on in Java, namely writting a super-duper, wizbang scientific visualization tool in Java and OpenGL. I was able to install JavaCC from the file JavaCC0_7_1.class as follows: java JavaCC0_7_1 But I'm having trouble running other Java _applications_ (not _applets_!!) For example, I was able to build and install the libs and classes for Jogl-0.7, and I could compile the demos with javac just fine but when I tried to run one of them (e.g. bounce.class) like so: java bounce I get: Can't find class bounce or like so: java bounce.class I get: Can't find class bounce.class This occurs whether or not I have CLASSPATH set explicitly (i.e. I've tried including . in CLASSPATH explicitly but this did not help, normally I do not have CLASSPATH set at all). I feel like I'm soooo close to having things set up for java development. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Please respond to me directly as I'm not on your mailing list. I use java_X version "jdk1.1.5-Freebsd:02/25/98" from the ports collection and it works ok for me. You could also try to use less optimization when compiling the JDK? Also I have noticed that the java compilation doesn't work well with the '-O' flag for optimization, generating various exceptions and such. I hope you can manage to get jCVS to work for you, regards --Jeroen ~ Jeroen Hogeveen // *BSD UNIX; For powerful, stable, efficient serving jh@twiddle.com // Free x86-BSD @ http://www.freebsd.org/ Any opinions expressed herein are not those of present nor past employers. This was the static Motif build from http://www.freebsd.org/java that I was having trouble with, but I could have used my Lesstif-linked version (with debugging symbols intact) to check on the problem.
