If someone is knowledgeable enough, the source code to the JRE is only a signed FAX away, and the "how-to" can probably be gotten from the Blackdown project. I guess people already know this, but, anyone can register for the Java source code and download it from Sun after filling out a license agreement. In contrast to what the media and the press release have suggested, the Java Activator does NOT replace the JVM in either Netscape. It isn't even used when you visit web sites unless those web sites have made specific changes to the HTML and the server's MIME types to present the Java applet to the user using the Activator. This is why Sun calls Activator a "...technology that developers need to deploy Java applets across browsers in the enterprise." This implies that the "enterprise" can change completely over to the Sun-based JVM so that employees can use whatever browser they prefer while the "enterprise" makes them use the same JVM on each, providing the true "write once run anywhere" that Java is supposed to deliver in the "enterprise." The web sites that don't specifically ask for the plug-in (by using EMBED and the special MIME types for the applets) will still use the browser's built-in JVM which is NOT CHANGED by the Java Activator. I got the pointer email about 8 or 9 days after sending the fax for 1.1.5. Since it's a manual process, I guess it just depends on the workload over there. But what bothers me is this: The 1.1.x license applies to all 1.1.x versions of the JDK. Unfortunately for the fulfillment people, the email address to which we can send requests for the new source (for current licensees) is curiously missing from www.javasoft.com which is apparently forcing everyone in the world to fax the license requests all over again. I've got another CVS tree ready to switch over to if we want, which would make it easier to track things and how our sources differ from Sun, or I can import JDK1.1.6 into the current tree and hope someone goes over it with a comb and makes sure it builds. I don't have time *right now* to make it build, but I'm hoping I'll get more time after June 1 to work on it. However, if there are people who are willing to work on it ASAP so we have a buildable tree, I'll import JDK1.1.6 as a vendor import. If you have the time and are willing to work on it, let the list know, otherwise I'll assume we'll wait until someone has time to work on it. Sun handles new versions by the same procedure - fax only. Just fill out the form again and fax it to them. JDK 1.1.6 is my third license - I just note on the form that the address details haven't changed since the last time and what version I'm looking for. It's *very* different (from a user/developer's perspective). Unfortunately, it's all weirded out using fvwm if I display applications from the SUN, but lots of Swing bugs we're fixed. I'd call it a step in the right direction, but not a big one. JDK1.1.7 is on tap still, which I believe is a good thing. :( The new release causes all windows to be placed in the upper left corner on the screen with fvwm, and also causes all Frames to be displayed as a *really* small decorated window no matter if they are visible or not, which looks bad. Note, these are all observed under Windows and Solaris, since I haven't even looked at updating the FreeBSD version. I suspect we can fix the WM bug, but the small decorated Frames may be due to a 'bugfix' that we don't necessarily want to fix. In short, I'm not as pleased with this release as I would like. We're avoiding it for our software until we get more time with it, which is the first time we haven't whole-heartedly agreed that the # of bugs fixed is greater than the number of bugs introduced.
