To Whom it may concern:

I've tried downloading the file mentioned in the subject line from
www.freebsd.org/java several times from my FreeBSD box as well as my Win95
machinef and each time I run gunzip on the file I get a crc error. Would
you check the file to make sure everything is ok. If the file is ok,
would you point me to another place to get this file from.

I also download it from http://www.freebsd.org/java/ last week,
but it's all OK.
The checksum is the following:

% md5 jdk1.1.6.V98-7-21.tar.gz
MD5 (jdk1.1.6.V98-7-21.tar.gz) = a29020b1659bdb599e4fd6d9f8285eee

This is the same as ports/lang/jdk/files/md5 in ports-current.

By the way, I found a problem in it.
When I execute a Java application or applet by appletviewer,
it always shows only upper and left side.
It seems the calculation of the coordinates of the point is something wrong.

My environment is:

2.2.7-stable (98/08/02)
XFree86 3.3.2.3
fvwm95
etc.

The others are OK for me,
especially it is more stable and Japanese characters can be showed.
Thank you.

As the WWW page mentions, this bug is one in *ALL* JDK1.1.6 versions
(including the Solaris release), and is not specific to FreeBSD. It
will be fixed when Sun fixes the original JDK sources and/or someone
figures out the bug and fixes so we can submit the fix back to SUN.

Oh, I see.
At the Section 6 it has been written,
I was not careful enough.

I am going to translate the page into Japanese to become popular.

I am also very happy I can do programming in Java on FreeBSD.
BDK 1.0 (March '98) works well, too.
I will test the newer version of BDK.

Thank you.

I didn't have any trouble downloading this the other day. I guess you
could try setting your transfer mode to binary if you're using FTP (I'm
not sure if this is served on FTP actually; I just did a browser HTTP
download, which incidentally took about five hours).

Are there legal issues with including the JDK 1.1.x on the Walnut Creek
CD-ROMS?

Regards,
Joe Shevland.

Just to put my bit in as well, I haven't experienced any problems at all
with the JDK 1.1.6 (apart from, as you said, the window manager/applet
viewer prob). I've noticed that the javadoc program is a true chewer of
memory; this though is also a cross-platform problem (good thing about
cross-platform software; you get cross-platform bugs :)

Anyway, thanks very much to all who put the time in to make Java on
FreeBSD a reality. This has helped me no end in testing
Internet/intranet apps on a quality OS. When Win crashes once too often
or misbehaves as usual, its comforting to know I can jump onto my BSD
box with Apache, Java servlets, the JDK and all the other bells and
whistles... and have it work.

Regards,
Joe Shevland.

No. We can and do distribute JDK on the CDs. So long as we don't charge for
it, nor distribute it with a Java product, we are legal.

If so, we certainly shouldn't. Distributing the JDK *except* via the
net is illegal according to SUN. You can distribute the JRE legally,
but *NOT* the JDK.

*phew* I just checked, and indeed we don't put it on the CDROM.

Are we considering the CD either (a) a product or (b) charging for it?
I don't consider that we are doing either. If JDK can be place in a book, and
the book can be charged for, why can't we distribute them?

And we've been distributing jdk102 on CD's for a while. I checked my
2.2.5-RELEASE CD's. It's on disk four in the /usr/ports/distfiles directory.

On another matter. Since I was reading the source license, what about this
clause:

"Licensee shall not export, re-export or transfer, whether directly or
indirectly, Licensed Software or Derived Binaries or direct products thereof, to
any person or company who is a legal resident or is controlled by a
legal resident of any proscribed country listed in the U.S. Export
Administration Regulations (or any equivalent thereof) unless properly
authorized by the U.S. Government."

Are we "exporting" in a legal sense?

So far so good. Note the 'for internet distribution'.

It's a product for Walnut Creek. Matter of fact, the CD *is* the only
product from WC.

As a matter of fact, you can't in fact put the JDK on a CD and
distribute it with a book.

Look again. The only thing in the package is the class files. The
actual JDK distribution isn't in there.

That's a sticky matter best left up to lawyers. Due to a legal
precedence set by a lawyer in S.F., Walnut Creek's lawyers have deemed
it 'OK' to distribute some of the products deemed illegal by the export
laws, and to be honest I haven't cared much about it.

Maybe I should????

Ah. Fine print always gets you :)

I was considering a product to be a Java product that JDK was bundled with. If
it's any product, then we can't distribute it, as you have said.

Hum. I wonder if they have a commercial license, or if we can arrange with
Sun to distribute it freely on the CD. I'll follow that up.

I didn't open it. Haven't used 1.02 in a long time.

Nah. If they scream, we'll take it off.

Lawyers in the past have made no distinction between 'charging for
media' and charging for 'product'. I expect Sun's lawyers to behave the
same, and so do all of the other porters.

A commercial license costs close to a million $$. I talked with someone
whose company actually bought one, and there's no way WC is going to do
that just to distribute the JDK.

As far as SUN allowing giving dispensation, I gave up on trying to have
any meaningful relationship with them. They promised 6-9 months ago
that we (the FreeBSD java porters) would get access to the JDK1.2
sources long before they went public. I kept on them for weeks until
they finally quit answering email. Apparently the Linux folks have the
same problem, and their advocate *works* for Javasoft.

Well that certainly answers that. Oh well.

I know Javasoft have had an upheaval of some description recently; they
might need to get their act together or have possibly lost some staff
that previously were handling this issue.

Having said that, I think its poor that they are destroying an obviously
crucial business partner in the Linux/FreeBSD camps. I would have
thought they'd love to get the JDK out to as many people as possible...
obviously they don't need the support I thought they did.

Joe.

The /java/ directory at www.freebsd.org/java/ create every day 35% of
the total web traffic, thats 500-600MB/day. Some *.tar.gz files are
very large, 5-12MB each. HTTP is the wrong protocol for transfering
large data, e.g. it does not support the 'reget' function. Can we move
the large files to the FTP server ftp.freebsd.org?

Wow, that's *great*. :) :)

A number of folks have been asking for this, but I'm in no position to
give out ftp access to myself on wcarchive. David?

I don't see any reason why not - where specifically do you want it?
Under development/lang/java?

I need a place where I can update it on a regular basis. Either that or
a shell script could mirror it from someplace that I can stick it.
