Whatever version of tar you are using is now compatible with any version
of tar I've used. This is a tar archive, not a cpio archive.

Are you sure you downloaded the file in binary mode?

The file was downloaded in windoze, right?
so under freebsd:
`mv jdk1_1_7_V98-11-5_tar.tar jdk1.1.7.V98-11-5.tar.gz'
`tar xvzf jdk1.1.7.V98-11-5.tar.gz'

       Shouldn't this read 'xvzf'? At least that's how I untar those archives..

BTW, why don't you try the JDK in the ports collection - same executables, but
saves a lot of hassle when installing everything.

The FreeBSD JDK is a simple, gzipped tar file. Absolutely no need for any use
of 'cpio' here.

Does anyone know why netscape 45 here doesn't seem to run with applets
built with jdk1.1.7 ?? It complains about a bad magic number :-(

Are you compiling your applet with Jikes and not javac by any chance?
If so, try a compile with the JDK javac, and see if that helps things.
Otherwise, clear your cache, restart your browser, and if you are
testing on a Win32 platform, reboot too for good measure.

Lastly, if none of this helps (and if no one else on the lists knows
what the issue is), please post some more information like an exact
stacktrace, a simple source example we can compile/test, platform you
are running Netscape on, etc.

freebsd-java and running Win32 :-) how dare you.
Well, no I reduced the problem to that of running applets over secure
http, which doesn't seem to work :-(

I've managed to have applets running (and talking back) over https using
apache 1.3.1, SSLeay and netscape 4.5 as the browser, but only for JDK
1.0.2. Is this just a broken combination with 1.1.7 and 4.5?

It does work if I run it over the normal http port with same browser,
same classfile and same webserver.

Is the applet signed? I seem to recall seeing something about
current versions of Communicator requiring signatures on applets
invoked via https.

It work well in my environment over both http and https:
	OS: FreeBSD 2.2.6
	SSLeay: SSLeay-0.9.0b
	Apache: apache_1.3.3
	Netscape: version 4.5
	JDK: jdk1.1.7 with i. javac

Hi all,

I just saw on slashdot (www.slashdot.org) that IBM have released the Jikes
compiler as Open Source. The license its being released under is at
www.ibm.com/research/jikes/license.html -- I haven't had a chance to look at
it yet, but slashdot is of the opinion its fairly unrestrictive.

I've got a FreeBSD native binary that I'm testing locally. (See my
recent post to hackers about wchar support.)

If it works out I'm going to see if I can make it available on the
FreeBSD-java page. The only issue is displaying the Copyright. Hmm,
maybe I'll make a port out of it. :)

That seems to be the best and correct thing to do :)

According to the Financial Times (http://www.ft.com/hippocampus/qe250a.htm,
 but password protected) Sun has announced that they are releasing "Java" as
"community source" (some sort of Open Source(TM)-derivative license) so it
looks like we may be able to get a version on FreeBSD before too long...

Seems like a good week for open source software!

Hello Nate,
    here is another one. This one is pretty critical and any help will be
deeply appreciated

FreeBSD JVM version : 1.1.7
This code causes the Resident memory size of the java process to continously
grow
You can see this if you run "top" on freeBSD
It will eventually given an OutOfMemoryError

If you throw in the socket code, it will give a "recursive malloc()" error
To trigger this error there has to be a client that continuously tries to
connect to the server
This problem seems to be an result of the previous problem, however this
causes our server to die.

I ran this using a SUN JVM on Solaris without any problems
-----------------------------------------TSock.java
----------------------------------
import java.net.*;
import java.io.*;

public class TSock {

    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {

        /* Required to trigger recursive malloc error after OutOfMemory
condition
        ServerSocket server = new ServerSocket(9090);
        */

        while(true) {
             Thread t = new Thread();
             t.start();
             t.stop();
             System.gc();
             System.runFinalization();

            /* Triggers recursive malloc error after OutOfMemory condition
                Need to have a client that tries to continously connect to it

             try {
                  Socket s = server.accept();
                  s.close();
             }
             catch(Exception e) {
             }
            */
    }
  }
}

I see this on Solaris as well.

I just ran it and I *do* see this problem, which implies a generic JVM
problem with the SUN implementation. Which version of the JVM are you
using on Solaris?

Yes this is a known problem. Take a look at all of the reports
on Bug Parade at the JDC site. Most of these reports are closed
stating that the problem can almost always be attributed to a
problem in the user's code. This is utter bs! Why do you think
they added the flush() method to java.awt.Image?

     I heard that before year 2000, there is another millenium bug, called "Preview Bug" which may occur on 9/9/99 (Sep. 9, 1999) or 1/1/99 and
cause critical problems, such as skip & delete data and so on.

  Do jdk 1.0 or 1.x have this poblem? I believe not. But I want to check this. If you have any idea about this. Please send me a mail please.
Thank you.

Sun has a page on their WWW site that explains all of these issues.
Please check out www.javasoft.com and look for the Y2K statement

kaffe doesn't seem to grow in size but dies when I uncomment the socket codeand
test it with connections

Hmm.. I tried it today with the latest snapshot and it worked fine.
Which version were you using? I think Thread.stop was just fixed.

Hmm, I *just* compiled it yesterday on a 2.2.8 system by replacing
'wchar.h' with:

#include <stddef.h>

and using the RedHat 5 - libc5 defines.

CCREQUIREDFLAGS=-DGNU_LIBC5 -DUNIX -funsigned-char  -c -DTYPE_bool -ansi -I.

The GNU_LIBC5 sources bring in some w* definitions that are necessary,
and the resulting executable appears to be working fine. (Although, it
appears to run slower than the Linux version.)

Albrect,

That is great news to hear!

What would you need from our end? Someone to hack code, or merely to make sure
the latest and greatest is availible on the FreeBSD side?

If its the later, I'd be happy to maintain the port. I'm too busy to hack on
this as well :)

We'd  love to have TYA!

Jikes works fine. I haven't stress tested it completely on my (fairly
complex) JFC applications, but it appears to work fine. However, I
should note that the Linux jikes binary is still faster than the FreeBSD
native binary I compiled.

(In case you weren't aware, Jikes is a replacement for javac, and only
javac. No VM, but the compiler is at least 10X faster than javac).

Some things to note. Applets compiled with jikes don't always work the
same as applets compiled with javac. Some people have reported that
jikes compiled applets won't pass the byte-code verifier test in certain
browsers, but this was with older versions of Jikes. Newer versions of
jikes are supposed to have fixed it, but the reporters haven't updated
to test this yet. (This from another mailing list I'm on.)

there is not yet. But I have announced a ``christmas release''
on the Linux list some days ago. So if nothing bad happens
I will put it out on the net on the weekend @gonzalez.

ftp://gonzalez.cyberus.ca/pub/Linux/java/

(Thanks the work of Neil Sanche I choosed ``gonzalez'' to be
TYA's home site.)

This release will be both: a Linux plus a FreeBSD release.
For more info compare other mails today.

no, but Mon 9th November 1998  (TYA1.1v4)
ftp://gonzalez.cyberus.ca/pub/Linux/java/tya11v4.tgz

Cheers

As mentioned in other mail the release of TYA1.2 comes at the weekend.
Thanks the initial work of K.Ball and my further ``studies'' of FreeBSD OS.

I used version 2.2.6 and jdk1.1.5 (February)
I have added a primitive recognition of this JDK in the./configure script,
so it should run well. (But tested only text mode stuff like ``javac'')

Because 1.1.5 is outdated, I tried also 1.1.6, that works too. But
this mysscript does not recognize autmaticly, because Steve Bourne's Linux
port has the same release version.

WHAT I NEED is mostly that someone of you experts will change
the configure script for proper setting some defines like

#define FREEBSD

etc.

WHAT I NEED is mostly that someone of you experts will change
the configure script for proper setting some defines like

#define FREEBSD

etc.

As mentioned in other mail, TYA 1.2 will come next days.
In the moment someone has patched the scripts, we would
release TYA 1.2v2.

I can't do this patches by myself, because the PC I used
to install FreeBSD 2.2.6 was ``leased'' for 1 week only
and is not available anymore. (BTW I am a satisfied using Linux)

BTW: the PC was a very slow 486/33:
Sieve scores
using TYA 224 iterations, sieve score 22
   no TYA 24 iterations, sieve score 2

Please do not expect too much, because
1. on real applications using Linux JDK the relation
   is about 1.2 up to about 4, plus somewhat more for AMD K6-II CPU.
2. of course TYA some bugs...?

Great. If you could send the announcement to this list, I'm sure
someone would send you the proper patches and such.

Do you have the patches you used to make the original FreeBSD port, or
are they already including in V1.2?

I just did. Works fine anyhow. The .class files differ, but they
execute just as well. Using 1.1.6 still, but the latest JFC stuff, and
lots of jdbc, graphics, etc. Compiles like the wind, and works fine.

About 100K of source, compiled in about 1.5 seconds. That'll do me.

 but it appears to work fine. However, I

It's fast, but it barfed on the first file I tried to compile
because it couldn't handle the inner class (I guess):

Hello,

I just wanted to volunteer my services for testing the JDK1.2 port of Java
to FreeBSD. Of course I have no idea what your plans are to work on this,
but let me know if I can help.

My company are currently developing a commercial app using JDK1.2 and
Swing/JFC. They use Windows NT.

I would like to get it working on my machine at home though so I can work
from here :-)

10tx!
Is anyone already done to make port/package ?
if not, I will do it.

Jikes definitely can handle inner classes. I use it (the Linux version
of FreeBSD) for my own development for quite some months now and I
never had any problem that javac would not also have reported. I just
know my mistakes faster than with javac :-) For development, jikes
really saves an awful lot of time that you would otherwise have to
just sit back, relax and enjoy the waiting.

I discovered a difference between these two compilers when I switched
to using Jikes. I don't know Java well enough to know which one is
doing the right thing, however. I imported java.util.* and
java.awt.*, and used the class List which is present in both packages
without specifying which one. Only one had the correct parameter
types, however, so javac seems to have decided which one I wanted to
use based on that. Jikes complained about it.

Also, I've not got my servlets to work using Jikes. The compile ok,
but somehow fail to load. Recompiling them with javac make 'em work
again.

So, there definitely are differences in the code they produce, and
sometimes this seems to matter.

What JDK1.2 port? Sun hasn't release the sources to JDK1.2 yet, so we
don't have a port.

I agree. We use inner classes extensively in our code, including
anonymous inner classes and it works fine. However, it's possible that
Archie is running it through the Kaffe stress tests, which might show up
different bugs.

Note, if you use jikes Kaffe appears to have problems, but this has
already been reported to the Kaffe team.

Nate

ps. Archie, the modulo bug should be fixed in all subsequent releases of
FreeBSD. Keith White tracked down the bug and I committed the fixes
recently. If you are interested in a 'configure' solution for FreeBSD I
can tell you privately.

Hi,

the subject says it all:

TYA1.2 is out now!

For the first time we have also experimental
support for the FreeBSD ports of JDK1.1
Also there are bugfixes, for example a problem
running TogetherJ is reported to be fixed.

ftp://gonzalez.cyberus.ca/pub/Linux/java/tya12.tgz

(size is 125053 byte)

Merry Christmas!
Albrecht

PS: for the newbies who have never heard about TYA:
it's a JIT distributed in source code under GPL.
Just try it.

PPS: once again thanks to all feedback I've gotten.

Maybe kaffe's Klasses.zip is somehow confusing it?
Here is a sample class that it barfs on:

  import java.io.*;
  public class Foo {
    public static class FooBar extends DataInputStream {
      public FooBar() {
	super(new InputStream() {
	  public int read() {
	  return -1;
	  }
	});
      }
    }
  }

Can someone try this with the Sun classes.zip in their CLASSPATH
instead and tell me if it works?

Thanks, I saw that one go by. I think Godmar has already checked in a
FreeBSD-specific workaround anyway. And I added a regression test for it.

Yes, have done it for:

java -version
java version "jdk1.1.5-Freebsd:02/25/98"

uname -sr
FreeBSD 2.2.6-RELEASE

Thankyou to all those who wrote and helped with Tya! Works like a charm
so far (although I did get a few warnings in compilation about
incompatible casts).

I'm using the JServ servlets with Apache as well, and, perhaps just a
placebo effect, they seem much quicker in responding too!

Regards,
Joe.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :-)

I compiled it under 3.0 and it seems to be working, so far i've tried
hotjava, icqjava and a few mStar tools. Swing on the other hand doesn't
seem to be cooperating very well.

There are some bugs, for example did icqjava make my whole desktop freeze,
it it's in icqjava or the tya i don't know :-)

Oh, I am sorry - I saw an announcement about JDK 1.2 on Linux so I assumed
with the official release it was available.

Anyway - I just wanted to volunteer my time if/when the Java team do
get to have a look at it.
