The FreeBSD is 2.2.5 from CD-ROM together with the PAO-ready boot-diskette. The pccardd(8) runs fine and attaches the pluged in cards to the driver (e.g. assigns the IRQ and I/O window). The interface is configured and up but there is some problem with it. IP packages on the network are not quickly and/or reliable delivered to the TCP modules. If I telnet from the FreeBSD box (193.31.10.40) to some host on the same network, directly sitting on the same table (193.31.10.39) it takes up to 10 seconds until the echo of a pressed key arrives in the telnet client. I checked it with tcpdump(1M) running on some other host in the same network and as you can see the IP pkgs leaves the FreeBSD host correctly and the other hosts IP answers quickly with ACK which is not delivered to the right place in the FreeBSD kernel: 17:13:46.98 193.31.10.40.1024 > 193.31.10.39.23: P 43:45(2) ack 94 win 16384 (DF) [tos 0x10] 17:13:46.99 193.31.10.39.23 > 193.31.10.40.1024: P 94:96(2) ack 45 win 4096 17:13:49.66 193.31.10.39.23 > 193.31.10.40.1024: P 94:103(9) ack 45 win 4096 17:13:52.53 193.31.10.40.1024 > 193.31.10.39.23: P 43:45(2) ack 94 win 16384 (DF) [tos 0x10] Attached below are also the output of ifconfig(8) and netstat(1). I have seen such delays on other systems where entries in the /etc/hosts were missing -- but I'm clueless here on FreeBSD. I can't imagine that there is a trouble with the hardware because the Linux repair kernel (booted from a CD-ROM) configures the PCMCIA card bridge and the 3c589D out of the box and telnet just runs fine. I don't want to go with Linux but I also can't run FreeBSD without network support. I suspect that the maintainer upgraded to CVSup-15.3 but didn't notice that a couple of things have changed with respect to the cvsupd.access file. Now, if there is a cvsupd.access file, then the default rule is to deny access unless something in the cvsupd.access file grants access. The maintainer can fix it by adding this line to the end of the cvsupd.access file: +0.0.0.0/0 # Grant access by default John -- John Polstra jdp@polstra.com John D. Polstra & Co., Inc. BTW: does the FreeBSD 2.2.6. boot.flp contain the support for the above hardware also? > The interface is configured and up but there is some > problem with it. This came up 2-3 days ago on this list, and the problem is that the IRQ assigned to your card is actually in use by some hardware on your box, but the FreeBSD kernel doesn't know about it. (A built in IR port/sound-card, or something). You'll need to hard-code the IRQ used. I disabled the COM[1-2] and LPT1 ports (which free the IRQ's 4, 3 and 7) and tried to reuse all of these IRQ's for the 3C589D card in the /etc/pccardd.conf file. The IRQ 3 didn't work at all (the driver complains about a wrong IRQ mask) and the IRQ's 4 and 7 were attached via pccardd(8) to the card but with slow network performance (ping delays of ~1.600 ms). I checked the same BIOS setup with the Linux boot diskette and the Linux cardservice uses IRQ 3 for the 3C589D and after running ifconfig(8) for the interface all was fine. I don't want to compare Linux vs. FreeBSD and the only reason for saying that is: I can't imagine that there is a problem with the hardware or IRQ values. Should I dig into the kernel driver if_ep.c for that problem? matthias -- firm: matthias.apitz@sisis.de [voc:+49-89-61308-351, fax: +49-89-61308-188] priv: guru@thias.muc.de PGP: Key fingerprint = 0C 01 F2 23 EC 17 A2 D5 46 2D 29 4C 0E 8B 7E 8F URL: http://www.sisis.de/~guru/ http://www.muc.de/~thias/ from USENET: People who run servers understand that flashy interactive interfaces have nothing to do with the underlying functionality and often get in the way. (i.e., tunnel-style forwarding/encapsulating of IP from the home network to the mobile location). I am in the process of writing a user-land IP tunnel utility for use in a VPN-environment, but as the behavior of Mobile IP is very similar, it seems applicable. I currently have an implementation of a tunnel using /dev/tun over UDP, but will have a raw-sockets direct IP encapsulation (using IP protocol 4) sometime later this week. This is something that could definitely be done kernel-side, but since FreeBSD does have a nice user-land tunnel device, this seemed like a quick way to prototype it. As far as I know, the last release was made by me in September. It was against 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 with PAO (or, it might just contain the entire kernel source tree, but same idea). The PSU implementation is very robust and handles relatively rapid FA switching well (not that I had much to do with that part of it). It also contains some interesting security extensions, including a (somewhat old) version of NRL's IPSEC. There is still work being done on the project, although I do not think it is near another release. It has been there since last July/August. This is essentially a combined IPSEC/Mobile-IP implementation where MIP may *optionally* use IPSEC 2-way tunnels with manual keying. MIP can standalone as well. The kernel in question at the time the release was made was 2.2.2. There is a great deal of kernel work in there by us but it is mostly IPSEC related. There is some mobile-ip stuff, mostly focused on the IPIP "mvif" tunnel driver that actually does many jobs including manual VPNs with IPSEC (done with route(8) and or arp(8)), plus a few odds and ends. I can give somebody a 2.2.5 kernel if they so desire, but I haven't finished testing it yet. Of course, now I get to do it again. Our kernel work assumes the PAO, so we have to have a PAO to build on. On the other hand, given the correct kernel (speaks MIP hacks), our binaries of last summer are still compatible with 2.2.5 kernels. Go figure. The spring or early summer release (this is a guess as to both when and what) should include: 1. HARP, the Home Agent Redundancy Protocol, i.e., Mobile-IP HAs can work in parallel so that if one fails, a 2nd HA is available to take over the Mobile network. 2. MADRP - an experimental multi-hop ad hoc routing protocol. 3. 2.2., at least 5, maybe 6. We'll see. 4. A DHCP based mobile-ip as well as the current FA orientation, which can include 2-way IPSEC back home. 5. mystery features Mike! I'm in still Portland, ... just drive down the same freeway in a different direction about the same distance. This is something that >could definitely be done kernel-side, but since FreeBSD does have a nice >user-land tunnel device, this seemed like a quick way to prototype it. > > > Robert N Watson Robert, The CMU Monarch Project Mobile IP implementation supports FreeBD (as well as NetBSD). This implementation supports the complete IETF Mobile IP protocol and is widely used (last I looked, almost 600 FTP downloads). Our current main release (version 1.1.0) supports FreeBSD 2.2.2, and is available from: ftp://ftp.monarch.cs.cmu.edu/pub/monarch/mobileip/mip-1.1.0.tar.gz The newest alpha release of our implementation (2.0.0-alpha) now supports FreeBSD 2.2.5 and also includes support for the IETF Route Optimization extensions to the base Mobile IP protocol, and also contains improved support for multiple interfaces and foreign agents. This release is available from: ftp://ftp.monarch.cs.cmu.edu/pub/monarch/mobileip/mip-2.0.0-alpha.tar.gz The IETF has yet to standardize Route Optimization for IPv4, and this code represents an intermediate stepping stone between the current version of the drafts, and the direction the drafts are headed. Ideas appearing in the newest drafts are being tested out by this code, and this code will be updated to remain current with developments in the standardization process. Also new in this release is improved support for multiple simultaneous interfaces and foreign agents. The mobile node code, "mobiled", has been greatly simplified with the addition of a table of "registration methods". There is one entry in the table to represent each of the possible methods the mobile node can currently use to obtain connectivity. The registration method table greatly simplifies the logic, making it easy to adjust the policy used to pick how a mobile node should obtain connectivity at any point in time from the available choices. For more information on the CMU Monarch Project, see our Web pages at http://www.monarch.cs.cmu.edu/ You can also find copies of all our research papers and links to the above FTP URLs on our Web pages. No delays in Linux? This one has me stumped. Mike? Nate I started to debug the if_ep.c driver in the kernel. I have some experience in kernel ports and will see what I can do. I already found that the problem are the outbound IP pkgs. For every pkg the routine if->watchdog gets called for a missing interupt. So the problem isn't in user-land (e.g. routing or ARP or DNS), it's in kernel-land. Is there someone who is "in charge" for that driver code or someone who can offer the internal programmers manual for that card (3C589D)? Thx. Mostly I'm working for UNIX SVR4.x system software w/o the kernel source -- it's nice to have the source of FreeBSD. matthias -- firm: matthias.apitz@sisis.de [voc:+49-89-61308-351, fax: +49-89-61308-188] priv: guru@thias.muc.de PGP: Key fingerprint = 0C 01 F2 23 EC 17 A2 D5 46 2D 29 4C 0E 8B 7E 8F URL: http://www.sisis.de/~guru/ http://www.muc.de/~thias/ from USENET: People who run servers understand that flashy interactive interfaces have nothing to do with the underlying functionality and often get in the way. Can you see if the interrupt routine is called at all? > So the problem isn't in user-land (e.g. routing or ARP or DNS), > it's in kernel-land. Is there someone who is "in charge" for > that driver code or someone who can offer the internal programmers > manual for that card (3C589D)? Thx. I don't have one, but I can tell with certain assurance that the driver/software works on dozens of laptops, if not hundreds right now. I'd like into the interrupt generation code in the PCIC controller. I'm about 99.9% sure it's not and issue with if_ep.c, but probably in /sys/pccard. Somehow your controller is not getting correctly programmed to generate interrupts for the card, hence the reason you're not getting them. (This is assuming you're using the PCCARD code.) Is there someone who is "in charge" for > that driver code or someone who can offer the internal programmers > manual for that card (3C589D)? (This is assuming you're using the PCCARD code.) I checked the code in /usr/src/sys/pccard/ i82365.h and pcic.c and found that there is support in 2.2.5-PAO for an O2Micro chip with PCI device ID 0x673a1217. My chip is an O2Micro too but with another chipset and the PCI device ID is 0x68321217 (only the vendor ID 1217 is the same). I pulled a 60 page manual of the O2Micro 6832 from the web pages of the company. In your first response you mentioned that the O2Micro 6832 is supported out of the box in 2.2.6-RELEASE. May I ask you for a copy of the files i82365.h and pcic.c of 2.2.6 to check and compare it before dig into the registers of the chip? At the moment I don't have access to 2.2.6 CD-ROM's here.
