Message-Id: X-Files: The truth is out there Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hey Folks, I've got a guy running a TP560 with a NE2000 compatible card and a...uh... a modem of some kind. (Whoever the outfit USR bought is.) My guy would like to be able to keep both PCCARDS stuffed in his PC all the time. The problem we have is, when he inserts the ethernet card it slaps down a default route in his routing tables. Then, when he goes to use the modem and PPP, PPP connects -- but -- his routing tables are all screwed up. I verified this, I had him 'route delete default' and sure enough, then the modem worked. It would be neat if there was some script I could kick off to do this for him. I've tried to get PPP to clean up the routing tables before connecting, but I've never had luck...I probably don't understand something. Anyway, that's probably something I could puzzle out given enough effort. Problem is, how do I set that route back up when PPP is done? I'm using "ppp -background" to do this, then in the window manager I've got a few buttons so when he wants to hang up it just sends a 'kill -2' to the appropriate PID. Does anybody leave their pccards in all the time? I've always pulled the one I'm not using. I'd like to find a method of simplest approach here so he can just click on buttons in his window manager, rather than rooting through the routing tables deleting stuff that's causing trouble. I'm curious how other people handle this. [.....] The latest ppp (http://www.FreeBSD.org/~brian) allows you to add! default HISADDR (not the ``!''). This will RTM_ADD a route, and if that fails, attempt to RTM_CHANGE it. The alternative with older ppps is to delete 0 add 0 0 HISADDR As far as ``putting things back'' is concerned, setup /etc/ppp/ppp.linkdown: MYADDR: add! default x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is your router-via-the-NIC. > Thanks, > > > Brian -- Brian , , Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour.... William Congreve's line in _The Mourning Bride_ (1697), often misquoted as "savage beast," is no doubt inspired by a verse in William Shakespeare's _Measure for Measure (1604): "Music oft hath such a charm to make bad good, and good provoke to harm." In Henry VIII, Shakespeare spoke of Orpheus, who "with his lute mad trees,/ And the mountain-tops that freee,/ Bow themselves when he did sing." The replicators seem to work fine. :) [ Olicom Ethercom card ] > > Possible, depends on what it's trying to be. Is it a clone of an NE2000 > > board or what? > > Wish I knew. You could try building an entry for it using 'pccardc dumpcis'. The 'howto' information has been posted to this list many times in the past, so you may want to go peruse the archives for instructions. Sound: DMA timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? Sound: DMA timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? like the IRQ is not being rehung after the suspend. however, if i then hibernate/resume, it works just fine again. is it a software or firmware/hardware problem? anyone know what's up with that? the other nit i have, is that when i went from PAO -> vanilla freebsd, i noticed suspends under vanilla freebsd seem to use more battery power. i have two PCCARDs shoved into the machine, pretty much at all times. has anyone else noticed this? rob To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Apr 28 06:05:47 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA15162 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 06:05:47 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from theta.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (theta.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp [157.82.98.129]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA15156 for ; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 06:05:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from ignaz@fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp) Received: from yari.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (yari.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp [157.82.98.143]) by theta.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (8.8.6/3.6W) with ESMTP id WAA03335 for ; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 22:05:41 +0900 (JST) Received: from daikon.fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (daikon.fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp [157.82.109.70]) by yari.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (8.8.6/3.6W) with SMTP id WAA26881 for ; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 22:05:41 +0900 (JST) Received: from itokon by daikon.fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/3.4W2) id AA20289; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 22:05:40 +0900 Received: from fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp by itokon.fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp (SMI-8.6/3.6Wbeta7) id WAA16829; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 22:04:19 +0900 Message-Id: <3545D3D3.860AAA5@fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp> Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 22:04:19 +0900 From: Ignaz KOHLBECKER Organization: Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (X11; I; SunOS 5.6 sun4u) Mime-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: k Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Date: Sun, 19 Apr 1998 07:36:04 -0600 > From: Nate Williams > > >From this mailing list, I learned that 2.2.5 recognizes my PC-card > > even without PAO. > > Did you compile a custom kernel with PCCARD support? Hibernation doesn't lose the state of the DMA/sound hardware, it just pauses it. After a suspend/resume cycle, you have to reinitialise the hardware and restart the DMA, and our code doesn't do that. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Apr 28 11:32:33 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA26413 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 11:32:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from uni4nn.gn.iaf.nl (osmium.gn.iaf.nl [193.67.144.12]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id LAA26395 for ; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 11:32:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from wilko@yedi.iaf.nl) Received: by uni4nn.gn.iaf.nl with UUCP id AA29311 (5.67b/IDA-1.5 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org); Tue, 28 Apr 1998 20:32:25 +0200 Received: (from wilko@localhost) by yedi.iaf.nl (8.8.7/8.6.12) id UAA02169 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 20:36:16 +0200 (MET DST) From: Wilko Bulte Message-Id: <199804281836.UAA02169@yedi.iaf.nl> Subject: mobile newbie question To: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 20:36:16 +0200 (MET DST) X-Organisation: Private FreeBSD site - Arnhem, The Netherlands X-Pgp-Info: PGP public key at 'finger wilko@freefall.freebsd.org' X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi there, My employer today provided me with a Digital Hinote VP520 notebook, along with a DEPCM ethernet card and an Adaptec 1460. The latter works OK, I used it to install FreeBSD225/PAO on it. But for one reason or other I cannot get the DEPCM to work. And I'm probably missing the obvious: pccardd tells me that it correctly identified the DEPCM, assigns IRQ10 to it and then proceeds with telling: "driver allocation failed for DIGITAL (Device not configured)". I'm running a kernel based on PAO_ALL which is part of the PAO 2.2.5R patchkit. And it has ed0 in the kernel. Of course the kernel during boot tells me 'ed0 not found' but pccardd should hook it in (yes?). Please tell me what I'm overlooking... I'm not familiar with the PAO error messages, so it's not clear why it's returning ENXIO. However, "driver allocation failed" means that the driver probe failed, or a free driver instance was not available. It looks like your card might not be sufficiently NE2000-compatible - you can add some printf() calls in the relevant probe routines to work out what's going on. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Tue Apr 28 13:02:19 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA20587 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 13:02:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from jli.com (jli.com [199.2.111.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id NAA20574 for ; Tue, 28 Apr 1998 13:02:14 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from trost@cloud.rain.com) Received: (qmail 17240 invoked by uid 4); 28 Apr 1998 20:01:34 -0000 Received: (qmail 2898 invoked from network); 28 Apr 1998 20:00:57 -0000 Received: from softdnserror (127.0.0.1) by softdnserror with SMTP; 28 Apr 1998 20:00:57 -0000 To: mobile@FreeBSD.ORG, Ignaz KOHLBECKER Subject: Re: pccardc References: <199804281604.KAA27961@mt.sri.com> <3545D7D4.7E627A0D@fujita3.iis.u-tokyo.ac.jp> In-reply-to: Your message of Tue, 28 Apr 1998 10:04:44 MDT. <199804281604.KAA27961@mt.sri.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-ID: <2894.893793657.1@cloud.rain.com> Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 13:00:57 -0700 Message-ID: <2895.893793657@cloud.rain.com> From: Bill Trost Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Nate Williams writes: > > pccardc: /dev/card0: Device not configured > > What does this mean? This means your PCCARD controller was not recognized. Is this a CardBus machine? What is the output of your kernel probes (dmesg output)? Rats, my mistake. I misread the error message in my last posting. The other possible theory is that card0 is not configured into the kernel you are using. My impression was that you took care of that, but it would be good to double check (by using -c at boot time, for instance). That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure what that could be or even how to fix it now that I don't have a network... I'm confused... The zp driver doesn't find the card even, so that is really odd. Trouble is that I don't have an old good kernel to fall back on :-( since it took a couple of tries (and make installs) to get this far. Hmmm, maybe a boot floppy.... I've done the usual recompile the kernel after rm -rf the compile directory, so I'm puzzled. The above output happened at one point when I screwed up, but it should have been fixed in both -current and -stable. > Trouble is that I don't have an old good kernel to fall back on :-( > since it took a couple of tries (and make installs) to get this far. > Hmmm, maybe a boot floppy.... > > I've done the usual recompile the kernel after rm -rf the compile > directory, so I'm puzzled. If all else fails, you could try backing out the changes I made to usr.sbin/pccard/pccardd/readcis.c to see if that helps. The system: gw2k solo 9000, with a 3c589D ethernet card. I'm trying to link to our university system via a UTP connection. I've been using zp0 for a while both with 2.2.5 and 2.2.6 releases. It works fine for me, but I have been getting tired of having to reboot to move the machine. I've now tried to get the ep0 driver working. pccardd recognizes the card when it is inserted and allocates the ep0 driver, but the network response is deadly slow. Even after looking at the maillist archives I am still at a loss as to how to rectify the situation (some messages in the archives suggest that ep0 should perform better than zp0). Is this related to routing issues? If so what should I do? My pccard.conf follows, if that is any help. Below is the dumpcis of the DEPCM, I hope that a knowledgeable person might be able to see what causes the problem. I got FreeBSD 2.2.6 on it, but I can't detect the PCMCIA controller. I've built the "generic" PCCARD kernel config, but no luck. Any ideas? Also, how much memory does X NEED to run? I have 8 on this laptop, and X freezes at startup. The graphical setup app works fine, though. I have a WD mono video card with 512K VRAM. Thanks. The port is strictly half-duplex, > that is, if machine A and B send some bytes at the same time > they will collide and junk byte will be received. actually it seems that receive is disabled while transmitting, but the situation is no different from what you say. What i was wondering, though, is if we could implement some quick and dirty hack in iijppp to make it work. Example: one side (the 'client' ppp) acts as a master, the other one as a slave. The protocol is governed by the master, and the slave can only send a packet right after a pkt coming from the master. The master sends empty pkts if it has nothing to send, just to trigger responses from the slave. The slave sends empty pkts if it has nothing to send, just to keep the protocol up. The master will assume a failure in the slave if a pkt is not received after a timeout (conveniently larger than 1MSS at the link speed), and will transmit after a timeout even if no reply is received. The slave WILL NOT send after a timeout. This should be relatively easy to implement.
