If you're running -current on your system(s), I'd like to hear how this
works for you. You will need to add

options	"VM86"

to your kernel config. This was tested with APM 1.1 and APM 1.2
systems; I don't have an APM 1.0 system or a copy of the 1.0 spec to
verify this code against.

Note also that the commented out section in apm_attach which sets the cs
and ds segment limits to 0xffff is probably cured by correctly
calculating the segment limits as the returned value less one. (This
is not detailed in revisions of the spec before 1.2.) At least the
Award APM 1.2 BIOS returns '0' for the CS32 and CS16 selectors.

PCCARD is in a severe state of flux since the CardBus chips in modern
laptops are not backwards-compatible to the existing code.

For the record, I have a Digital HiNote 575 (which is out of production)
that runs FreeBSD great save for the pccard slots. Toshibas have been
getting quite proprietary and may not work; ThinkPads have nutty keyboards
that may require sc0 flags but otherwise appear to work.

I think someone should start with a survey or database of known
working notebook configurations. Here is what I have:

FreeBSD 2.2.6-RELEASE
CPU: Pentium (200.46-MHz 586-class CPU)
real memory = 33554432 (32768K bytes)
Probing for devices on PCI bus 0:

chip4 <Intel 82371AB Power management controller> rev 1 on pci0:1:3
vga0 <VGA-compatible display device> rev 211 int a irq ?? on pci0:2:0
pcic0 <O2Micro OZ6832 CardBus bridge> rev 2 int a irq 9 on pci0:3:0
pcic1 <O2Micro OZ6832 CardBus bridge> rev 2 int b irq 9 on pci0:3:1
Probing for devices on the ISA bus:
...
wdc0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa
wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): <HITACHI_DK226A-32U>
wdc1 at 0x170-0x177 irq 15 on isa
wdc1: unit 0 (atapi): <SR200S/k02A>, removable, intr, dma, iordis

this works fine with FreeBSD and PCMCIA cards for Ethernet (3c589D),
ISDN (AVM Fritz!Card) and SCSI (Adaptec 1460B)

I'm trying to get the PCCARD stuff working on the
Digital HiNote Ultra 2000 GTX 5266M with Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible
PCMCIA controller and Texus Instruments PCI-1131 CardBus Controllers.
I have a number of questions.

First, is anyone else using this notebook who can swap notes with me?
Second, is there any documentation for the pccard options in the kernel
config? I haven't found anything in the handbook or faq.

I've installed FreeBSD 2.2.6 and everything works fine except for the
PCCARD stuff. I've also tried the PAO patches, which gave me a different
set of problems...Here are some of the problems that I'm seeing (I'll
include verbose kernel/pccardd output at the end of this message if anyone's
interested).

With the standard 2.2.6 distribution (no PAO):
 1. The computer has an integrated Xircom 10/100+56K LAN/Modem card on it's
own internal controller. pccardd sees the card (pccardc dumpcis output
below) but I cant' get any configuration to work. If nothing else,
can it be configured as a modem-only? Anyone have a pccard.conf
entry? There is a Xircom Combo modem-only config in the pccard.conf.sample
but any variation that I've tried gives me a "driver allocation failed"
    error.

 2. The integrated Xircom seems to be on it's own controller, occupying slot 0.
When I insert a 3Com 3C589D LAN card in the normal slots, the kernel
reports that a card was inserted in slot 3, but pccardd doesn't
see it or configure it. When I run 'pccardc dumpcis' it reports
only "2 slots found", which seem to be on the controller for the
integrated LAN/Modem, not the user-accessable ones.
Do I need to configure multiple controllers in the kernel? What should
    this config look like?

Docking issues:
 3. I have a Digital Multimedia dock for the notebook. Under standard
2.2.6, I can use it with the floppy drive in the dock module without
problems. I haven't tried any of the other dock ports yet.
It also has a PCI-bridge and another set of PCCard slots. Can I
config the kernel/pccardd to use these also? Currently, cards inserted
in these slots are not recognised by even the kernel.
 4. See 5!

PAO issues:
 5. I also tried using the latest PAO. It helped with some of the above.
pccardd recognized all 4 slots (2 on integrated lan/modem controller +
2 user-accessible ones) and my Etherlink III worked great. However,
when I booted with the notebook docked the kernel PANICED!
If anyone wants info to debug this, email me. Anyway, this is
unacceptable, so I went back to standard 2.2.6.

Well, I would be interested to hear from ANYONE who has tried FreeBSD 2.2.6
on this computer. An of course, any specific help or answers to the above
would be appreciated.

The rest of the message contain verbose output from the kernel and pccard
utils while runnign the standard 2.2.6-RELEASE distribution (no PAO):

One of my partner's has one of those running 2.2.6. He's stuck doing
some Win95 crud on it right now, but we did get 226 up.

We didn't even try. If you get it working, please drop me a line.

That's what we've determined as well.

The external slots are on the second controller. You need to:

  cd /dev/; ./MAKEDEV card2 card3

and restart pccardd.

The stock PCCARD config already has two pcic's configured, so you shouldn't
need to change it if you've cloned PCCARD.

> Docking issues:

Don't have a dock, so I don't know for sure. I'd just go ahead and
add pcic2 and pcic3 to your kernel and then ./MAKEDEV for /dev/cards4-7.

I'd add pcic2 and pcic3 and lose the "controller card1" line.

We've used my LinSys EC2T in the machine successfully. We'll be using
a 3c589D with it as soon as we get one from Frys that they haven't
re-shrinkwrapped without the dongle (grrrr!). Gorgous display -
very nice machine!

Best of luck,

Combo cards are not supported in FreeBSD or in PAO.

Multiple controllers are not supported in FreeBSD, although they may be
supported in newer versions of PAO (I don't know). I know that Fred
Templin was working on them.

So they supported multiple controllers, cool!

I suspect the multiple controller support in PAO isn't fully debugged
(duh!).

Great, this helped. I added all the pcics to my kernel config and
and made the devices. Now pccardd sees the card and matches it with an
entry in pccard.conf.

HOWEVER, pccardd gives the error :
driver allocation failed for 3Com Corporation

Can you tell me what should be at the top of my pccard.conf (io, irq,
memory, etc lines). I shouldn't need to change the 3Com 3C589D entry
should I?

Thanks

Hello nomads,

I'm trying to install FreeBSD 2.2.6 on a Thinkpad 701C. I use the PAO
(for 2.2.6) disk as a boot disk and it recognizes my ethernet PC-card
correctly: it's a D-Link DE-650CT.

I would like to install from a server on my LAN. The server's setup to
accept ftp connections and my 2.2.6 CDROM is available through the "ftp"
account.

The problem is that my laptop cannot connect/login into the server. I
see the message "Login in ftp@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and the "send" LED flashing
on the laptop's connection but the "receive" LED never flashes. My
understanding is that both computer can't talk to either other. I tried
doing a "ping" from the server to the laptop and it didn't work.

Are there any known install problems with the D-Link DE-650CT?

BTW, my pccard.conf configuration contains the 0x10 flags to avoid using
share memory (only programmed I/O).

Regards,
Alex Boisvert

i think i have had the same problem. I have a no-name card which
presents itself as IC-CARD IC-CARD, but some of the drivers on the disk
refer to the DE-650 so i suppose it is almost a clone.
This card (at least mine) does not have auto media select, and defaults to
using the UTP media. There is a dos/windows program which allows you to
set the media. It is fairly short (about 1KB) so i am looking at it.

All it seems to do is toggle one bit in some of the card's registers.
However, it appears to do it in a fairly complicated way, by banging
bits in some of the PCIC register. Maybe some of this functionality is
already duplicated in pccardc/pccardd but i am not (yet) familiar with
this code...

so, our only option thus far is to switch to windows, run the program,
and hope that the configuration is persistent :)

	cheers

This card isn't one that you can prise open, is it? I have a "Danpex"
card here which is fairly trivial to open, using a Tamerack chip. It
does auto media selection, so I've never bothered to go further than
that, but it might be feasible to get documentation for some of the
more common PCCARD 'net chips and write some grubby-little-hack
programs to do this...

Hey Folks,

I just sent my laptop in to IBM to get serviced -- the apm stuff quit
working and as a result they replaced my motherboard and updated my bios!
Really great service and they had it done in a day. What took the most
time was overnight shipping back and forth...

Unfortunately, now X doesn't work! :-/ I am now sporting a Cyber 9385/82
video chip, apparently. I'm not sure what I had before (the laptop is
about a year old), but it seems like things have changed enough that I
have to munge my XF86Config a bit.

SO, you happy TP560 folks out there: does anybody have a current working
XF86Config file for this chip?

Thanks,

Brian

Nope, this card is laser welded shut. I had freebsd 2.2.6 with PAO working
fine with this card on a NEC Versa 6030H. The DE-660CT does auto media
selection, so there is no need to toggle the card's registers manually.
You are probably just having IO address or IRQ conflicts. You might have
to use the IO address Windows uses. It's something like 0x120 on mine.

Mine claims to have a 9382. I can send it to you if you haven't
gotten dozens already. Only tested it with 800x600, though.

Now that I've answered a question, it's my turn to ask one. Does
anyone know of a 100Mbps ether card that works with a TP560E (not `X',
i.e., no cardbus...)? I looked up the PAO relnotes, the handbook etc.
but can't find anything about them.

Hi,

Pardon me for a newbie question, I'm not on this mailing list.

Has anyone done anything to enable the DES encryption facility in a
RoamAbout PC card?

Thanks,
Tony

Thank you Luigi, you hit right in the bullseye! (sp?)

I changed the default media to Coax instead of UTP and everything worked
fine (I only had to boot DOS from a floppy and run the little 1k utility)

PS: How did you know I was using Coax instead of UTP? ;-)

I owe you one...

I have a tp560 here that didn't work last time I tried. It did work with
the previous version of XF86 though.

Poul-Henning wins the Kewpie Doll. I went hunting around my other systems
and came up with a 3.3.1 XF86_SVGA binary, and a new XF86Config file from
the Japanese laptop site someone mentioned earlier. (Sorry I don't have
this information available...my life is in total disarray right now.)
Anyway, replacing the binary did the trick. Using the curent XF86_SVGA
just doesn't work with *any* XF86Config file I could muster. The older
SVGA works with one set up for a TP560E, though.

This sucks. I think a well-placed email needs to go to someone on the
XFree86 project and see if we can get this ironed out so It Just Works.

Thanks for the help everybody,

Brian

I already filed the bug, but I don't have the TP560 available anymore,
feel free to take over the bugging...

I finally got my modem working. I am using Freebsd PAO 2.2.5, I setup
the stuff for kernel ppp. And can log onto the internet. But then the
problems start, when for example i ftp, and ls in a large dir. , and
data starts to come down the line. I get stuff like this:
------
Jun 5 11:40:22 localhost /kernel: sio2: 1 more interrupt-level buffer
overflow (total 1)
Jun 5 11:40:44 localhost /kernel: sio2: 118 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 119)
Jun 5 11:40:52 localhost /kernel: sio2: 81 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 200)
Jun 5 11:41:16 localhost /kernel: sio2: 60 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 260)
Jun 5 11:41:21 localhost /kernel: sio2: 118 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 378)
Jun 5 11:41:25 localhost /kernel: sio2: 23 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 401)
Jun 5 11:41:37 localhost /kernel: sio2: 4 more interrupt-level buffer
overflows (total 405)
----
Etc. On a 56k modem this just suck, the flow of data is constantly
interrupted. All help wanted please, I really need to get this modem
working. Thanks :)

Try using user PPP - it looks like your CPU is too slow to keep up with
the flow of incoming data. You could also try turning off any
protocol-level compression that you might have enabled (leave the modem
compression on), as this will also slow kernel PPP down.

Does anyone know of any, period? I suppose 3com could (they make an
100mbit ISA) but you can't get even close to 100mbit speeds on a 16-bit
bus.

Actually I don't really need that much speed. I just want to connect
my laptop to a 100Mbps hub without having to go through another
computer.
