Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org My Motorola PM100C CDPD modem/radio is a type II PC-Card. It works reasonably well (i.e., as well as one can expect from CDPD) for wireless IP, with the exception that its 9V alkaline internal battery runs out far too quickly. Motorola supports "partial host power," which it is claimed will allow the radio to work for a much longer period on a single battery. In this mode, the PC-Card draws 12V from the laptop. Of course this will run down the laptop battery much more rapidly, but for applications where the laptop has an AC source, but no network connection, this power mode is a vast improvement. (Note that Motorola bizarrely neglects to offer a direct external AC power supply option for the card while it runs; they only offer an external charger and NiCad battery for the card, which requires the battery be removed from the card during charging. And of course, the NiCad battery has an even lesser capacity than a standard alkaline 9V cell.) I have learned the undocumented AT commands to make the Motorola card take 12V from the laptop to use this partial host power mode. Using (also undocumented) status AT commands, I learned that my laptop, an IBM 380D with a Cirrus PD672X PCIC, will not supply the Motorola with 12V when it is inserted. I have verified with pccardc dumpcis that the card's CIS tuples include a request for 12V, and with pccardc rdreg that the behavior of 2.2.6 leaves the power register for the slot in question with the 12V bit cleared. For the moment, I work around the problem by manually using pccardc to change the power register for the slot with the Motorola card to a value with the 12V bit turned on. This works just fine; when I query the card after hand- tweaking this register, it reports that it is receiving 12V from the laptop. My rather cursory reading of the pccardd and sys/pccard code gives me the impression that apart from an unused ioctl for setting the power values for a slot, there is no support in either 2.2-stable or 3.0-current for giving cards 12V when they ask for it. My question is, am I right? Has there been little demand for 12V, so that the pccard code doesn't check for the request from the card and configure the slot accordingly? Or am I missing the place that is meant to take care of this in the code, and the code is simply not working on my hardware? I would be happy to contribute code to handle 12V requests, if there is interest. I believe that in the "early days" there was concern that supporting this would lead to destruction of buggy cards. Since then, the issue has languished waiting for someone like yourself to take it up. > I would be happy to contribute code to handle 12V requests, if there is > interest. I finally downloaded the serial patch for 2.2.6 because the standard kernels didn't recognize my serial port or my internal 56k modem. The good news is that the patch allowed my kernel to recognize the serial port just fine, but the bad news is that it still doesn't recognize the modem. :( I haven't tested the serial port, since I misplaced my NULL modem cbl. But it seems to work... ??? I set it correctly in the BIOS (even tried a few permutations) so that the serial port is COM1 and the modem is COM2. I double-checked the IRQ's too. No luck. I should mention that I am trying to run FreeBSD 2.2.6 with the PAO patches. I have run the Memory Diags on the box, and everything checks out fine with the SIMM. Windows 95, which I have installed on another partition, sees the memory and it seems to work fine. -------- C. Thanks, Go to Toshiba, and ask them for programming documentation for the modem. It doesn't appear that it looks or behaves anything like a real serial port, so it's going to take some work to make it play. Are you using the link kit or the port? This works for me. I'm adding the neomagic directory (from either the 1.0 or 1.1 archive), patching as above and updating xf86site.def after doing a ``make patch'' in ports/x11/XFree86. But, as I mentioned in my other post, I get screen flickering - perhaps something to do with not having hardware pointer support... Things are also a damn site better in 16bpp than in 8bpp ! It makes no difference if I change the dot clock or mode lines from the recommended "800x600" 40 800 .... 600 .... +hsync +vsync. If I run an app (such as knews) full-screen, I get no flicker at all. I suspect I'm going to have to go join the XFree86 usenet group and be a newbie :-[] > Doug White | University of Oregon > Internet: dwhite@resnet.uoregon.edu | Residence Networking Assistant > http://gladstone.uoregon.edu/~dwhite | Computer Science Major -- Brian , , Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour.... The cnw driver from PAO worked for me under 2.2.5-RELEASE, but failed under 2.2.6-RELEASE. I've got the docs, and I've been meaning to sit down and write a driver, but haven't had time. If anyone else has gotten the cnw driver to work under 2.2.6 *without* *PAO*, I'd love to hear about it. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ted Faber faber@isi.edu USC/ISI Computer Scientist http://www.isi.edu/~faber (310) 822-1511 x190 PGP Key: http://www.isi.edu/~faber/pubkey.asc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: 2.6.2 iQCVAwUBNcIkk4b4eisfQ5rpAQHE5QP/YCB9YXq5mCsTM790GqyfmP6usljNxQ1j da1mI4lUKHuTaWMQV2YH6dtqbxLtE8cm8nPcmSNF7ZMhvP7WIgZniC+F/Fi5muSX kq0RZ7qYu1AWuN2kLW1INI68+6f/zwX/AqtM1RmMdNPX61ioJ+JFeiplQ6LPQo5o 6/sRy4iQsbA= =GM4P -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Jul 31 13:38:30 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA21540 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Fri, 31 Jul 1998 13:38:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from smtp04.wxs.nl (smtp04.wxs.nl [195.121.6.59]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA21500 for ; Fri, 31 Jul 1998 13:38:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from asmodai@wxs.nl) Received: from tempest ([195.121.58.45]) by smtp04.wxs.nl (Netscape Messaging Server 3.54) with SMTP id AAA3462 for ; Fri, 31 Jul 1998 22:38:12 +0200 X-Sender: skywise@pop.wxs.nl X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Demo Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 22:25:52 +0200 To: FreeBSD Mobile From: Jeroen Ruigrok/Asmodai Subject: Latitude CP/NeoMagic 128XD Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Message-ID: <77182D20EE3.AAA3462@smtp04.wxs.nl> Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hiya, anyone have a 2.2.6 XF86Config file for the Dell Latitude CP with the NeoMagic 128XD. I just talked to three different departments in Toshiba, and they all said that the 550 doesn't have a Winmodem. They couldn't give me any technical information or programming specs, but they did put in a request with the engineering dept. to have someone contact me. Digging on their site, I found some technical information. The modem is a 56kflex, don't know the manufacturer. They say it conflicts with the 3Com Megahertz XJEM3336 ethernet/modem combo card. One scary thing is that using the BIOS, you select two different IRQ's. Why, I don't know. According to one source, SCO supports Toshiba laptops and I heard their driver works, but I might be misinformed. It may be a lead, however. The Tecra 550's internal modem is the same modem in the Tecra 780, Tecra 750, and the Satellite 320. So does that help anybody? So does that help anybody? Yes. Apparently you, like me, have a Lucent "Mars" modem chip in your Tecra. I believe "Winmodem" is (technically) a U.S. Robotics term. The Mars modem isn't a "Winmodem" - it's a "controller-less" modem. Instead of something like a Z80 CPU to interpret AT commands and control the modem's DSP, those chores are handled by the main CPU (e.g. Pentium) via a device driver. The major computer makers, including Toshiba, love controller-less modems because they save a few (but only a few) dollars on the modem. In other words, don't get mad at Lucent about this, ask Toshiba why they didn't choose the Lucent "Venus" modem chip, which *does* include the controller on chip... (the answer, I'm sure, is that it costs a bit more :-( ) > If I can somehow > get some technical information, I don't mind writing the driver... :) To make a long story short, forget about it. The Win95 host driver for Mars not only interprets AT commands, it also manages the DSP, writing certain values to certain registers at certain times, and implements or controls the DSP to support all the myriad of standards included in modern modems (e.g. V.42, V.42bis, V.8, V.80, etc.) which go beyond the V.34 or K56Flex modulation itself. All this complexity results in a Win95 driver _binary_ of about 0.5 megabyte (see LTMODEM.VXD in \Windows\System). This may well be the way things are going. In the days when Mac AV had a 68k processor and an onboard DSP, they introduced a thing called a GeoPort. This is a pod containing just the interface h/w to connect to the line. The modem code ran on the DSP, and the 68k did the control. I still use one of these things with a PowerMac; nowadays both the control *and* the DSP code run on the PPC 604! -- Bob Bishop (0118) 977 4017 international code +44 118 rb@gid.co.uk fax (0118) 989 4254 between 0800 and 1800 UK To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message
