So far, response to the first two calls for testers has been totally underwhelming. Look people, this isn't hard: if you have a Compaq PCI Netelligent or NetFlex 3/P card or a Compaq system with a built-in Netelligent or NetFlex 3/P ethernet controller, or an Olicom ThunderLAN=based adapter, download the driver from http://www.freebsd.org/~wpaul/ThunderLAN and give it a try. If works great for you, then tell me. If it doesn't work, then also tell me, and give me lots of information about what doesn't work, what error messages you see, what hardware you have, and anything else that might make it easier for me to debug the problem. Apparently some people are unable to quite grasp this concept so I'm going to spell it out for you in graphic detail. You may wish to escort little children out of the room until I'm finished. This is what I want you to do: - If you have a Compaq system or Compaq network adapter, then establish whether or not it has a PCI ThunderLAN chip. Note that I said PCI. That's PCI: pee-see-eye. _NOT_ EISA. _NOT_ ISA. _NOT_ PCMCIA. Don't send me e-mail asking me what kind of card you have: YOU look in the manual and find out for yourself. Here's a hint: a NetFlex/E is an EISA bus card. A NetFlex/P is a PCI card. I'm not the least bit interested in the NetFlex/E, only the NetFlex/P. PCI ThunderLAN chips are about 1 inch square, have a Texas Instruments logo imprinted on them along with the word TLAN superimposed over a lightning bolt. There should be a part number that looks something like TNETE100A, or TNETE100PCM, or something to that effect. - If you can conclusively determine that you have a PCI ThunderLAN device, download the driver from http://www.freebsd.org/~wpaul/ThunderLAN and compile a new kernel. There are instructions there that explain how to do this. There's driver code for 3.0-current and 2.2.x (where x can be 5, 6 or 7; don't know about 2.2.1 or 2.2.2). - Boot the kernel and see if a tl0 device is detected and properly attached. If the driver complains that it couldn't read the station address from the EEPROM, then the attach will have failed. If you see 'tl0: Ethernet address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' then it succeeded. - It's possible you may have a ThunderLAN adapder who's PCI device ID does not appear in the device list in if_tlreg.h. If you think this is the case, try temporarily changing one of the PCI device IDs in if_tlreg.h to match your device's ID and see if the adapter is probed successfully. If so, e-mail me the device ID and the official name of the adapter (if you know it) so that I can update the list. - If the interface is attached correctly, connect the ThunderLAN NIC to a network and run some tests. See if you can get 100Mbps out of it. Beat up on it. Try to induce problems. Report back to me how well it works or fails to work. - Once you are satisfied that the driver works well, or you have found a problem, e-mail me at wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu and send me the following information: o The type of adapter you have and the type of system in which it is installed o If the adapter is integrated into your machine, provide the model number of the entire system o The version of FreeBSD you're using o An accurate and ___***DETAILED***___ description of any problem(s) you have encountered. Include _ALL_ error messages that you see. Quote the messages exactly: do not make half- hearted attempts to remember or interpret them. Just copy them down exactly and show them to me. o If you report a problem, be prepared to try patches that I might send you to fix the problem. Now here are examples of resports that I do not want to see, and the replies you're likely to get from me if see them: - "Hi, I have a Compaq GrumbleSmurf 2100 machine; does this system have a ThunderLAN adapter in it?" Don't send me questions like this. It's your hardware, you have the manuals for it, you can pop the cover and look inside it. _YOU_ tell _ME_ if it has a ThunderLAN PCI NIC in it. If I had a complete list of all Compaq models with ThunderLAN PCI NICs in them, I would have listed them here, but I don't. - "Hi, I have several Compaq systems with ThunderLAN NICs, but they're all in production running Windows NT and I can't shut them down to test them with FreeBSD." Then why did you bother writing me. - "Hi: I don't run FreeBSD, but do you know if your driver will work with Linux? I have a Compaq machine running Linux version mumble and I'm trying to set up networking on it." No, FreeBSD device drivers don't work with Linux. No, I will not help you set up Linux. If you want help with Linux, go subscribe to a Linux mailing list. If you persist in bothering me, agents of the sooper sekrit FreeBSD Cabal (tinfc) will sneak into your home, send me your machine so that I can do some decent testing, and replace it with a cardboard box with the word 'Compaq' written on it. Chances are you'll never notice the difference. - "Hi, I have a Compaq machine with a Netelligent NIC and I tried your driver, but I encountered some problems. Unfortunately, I'm going out of town for a month and I won't be able to give you any details or do any troubleshooting until then." I'm hoping to get this driver code into FreeBSD 3.0, which is due to ship inside of a couple of months, so I don't have time to wait for people to get back from their vacations/business trips/cruises/etc. Give me a break here people. - "Hi, I tried your driver but I got an error saying that something failed. Can you help me?" No. - "Hi, I have a Compaq machine running Windows 95. How do I install FreeBSD?" I'm sorry, this is device driver testing: brain implants are two doors down on the right. - "unsubscribe" Was it something I said? So come on people, I know there have to be some people out there with Compaq machines who want to use their built-in PCI NIC. If you don't have one, see if your friend has one. Or your friend's friend. If they're running Linux, convince them to try FreeBSD. Now's your big chance to contribute. Soon even you could be a member of the FreeBSD Cabal (tinfc). -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager, Master of Unix-Fu Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ============================================================================= "It is not I who am crazy; it is I who am mad!" - Ren Hoek, "Space Madness" ============================================================================= To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-net Sun Sep 13 12:37:19 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA18749 for freebsd-net-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:37:19 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from smtp03.wxs.nl (smtp03.wxs.nl [195.121.6.37]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA18740 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:37:16 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from asmodai@wxs.nl) Received: from diabolique ([195.121.58.148]) by smtp03.wxs.nl (Netscape Messaging Server 3.54) with SMTP id AAA2690 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 21:36:53 +0200 X-Sender: skywise@pop.wxs.nl X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Demo Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 21:37:33 +0200 To: FreeBSD Networking Group From: Jeroen Ruigrok/Asmodai Subject: Networking protocols Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Message-ID: <77187437E44.AAA2690@smtp03.wxs.nl> Sender: owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, anyone want to point me to good webpages detailing the following protocols (after the LINT options commands) as I would like to try to upgrade them to the 2.2.X series or even implement them back into -CURRENT options NS - Xerox NS protocol options CCITT - X.25 protocol options ISO - ?OSI stack? options TPIP - TP class 4 over IP options TPCONS - TP class 0 over X.25 options LLC - X.25 link layer for ethernets options HDLC - X.25 link layer for serial line options EON - ISO CLNP over IP options NSIP - XNS over IP If anyone could point me into some directions =) Thanks in advance, -- Jeroen Ruigrok van der Werven / Asmodai ICQ-UIN: 1564317 .:. One thing that ipfilter can do that ipfw can't untill tee is implemented is intercept packets. Suppose a scenario arrises where a box has a heap of ppp connections and one needs logging or tracing and it needs to be done discretely. ipfilter can forward another copy of the packets to another host (eg: outside of crackers vision) for logging. The main difference is that you can have packets logged that wouldn't otherwise be visible on an ethernet segment, eg: if a ppp user was trying to break into another ppp user on the same host and you needed a secure logging point. Mind you, tcpdump / tcpshow make a pretty good combination, especially when the dump file is being accessed via NFS so that there isn't as much running to tip off an intruder. I need to have access for about 50 stations to start. By X-Session I assume you want to run X programs on the bsd box and display them on the PC's ? I use the Exceed from Hummingbird to accomplish this. It has a different version for NT & 95. It lets you run an X-Server on the PC so that users can export DISPLAY=hostpc:0 on the bsd box and have the window open on their pc. Downside is that Exceed costs a lot. But it is a full fledged package. I did see some demo version of X-server for PC which lets you connect to a single host box at a time. I might have a copy at work. If you need it, I can look it up. I need to have access for about 50 stations to start. vnc should work well for what you want to do (if I understand you correctly). It sounds like you want to have several users, some of whom are using Win95, concurrently working on a single X display. vnc will do this, but you will need to specify that you want the session "shared" when you start the vnc client (i.e. "vncviewer -shared ..."). The vnc port will install both the client and server programs. If you download the Win95 binary distribution, you also get client and server functionality. For more information, look on their web page (listed in the port description). One interesting difference between the UNIX and Win95 versions is that the UNIX server shares a completely new X display, whereas under Win95, the server shares the existing desktop. (As a side note, I prefer both these models of collaboration to the way NetMeeting does things, which gives you a "two consoles chained at the hip" approach to sharing applications.) Play around with this, and if you have have any questions, drop a note to me or to freebsd-questions (one hint: -questions is probably more appropriate than -net). In theory, I'm now the port maintainer, but I did a boo-boo when I missed an upgrade that broke the port...thanks to whomever fixed it. Cheers, Bruce. --==_Exmh_-861705088P Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- Version: 2.6.2 iQCVAwUBNf3gV6jOOi0j7CY9AQEgwAP8CD41eTeiAbnjl3w/fSfJ54bWSbd3VWuO nWgIwFYrt3L5v2KMLTQzVJjlUJ9NaycEZKV6ZHXSHbzO0m4hZeD8YaZWGHhUewgz enY8eadjYNgehZ3nEO/O4RLwXHHbxJs0RVZFEocKVXE1938rAn98fNXLT2S4BaST fFOGfVV4odM= =0Eio -----END PGP MESSAGE----- --==_Exmh_-861705088P-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-net Mon Sep 14 20:48:58 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id UAA19315 for freebsd-net-outgoing; Mon, 14 Sep 1998 20:48:58 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from relay.pair.com (relay1.pair.com [209.68.1.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id UAA19310 for ; Mon, 14 Sep 1998 20:48:55 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from rjent@rjent.pair.com) Received: from cow (jc-19.connect.more.net [204.185.50.35]) by relay.pair.com (8.8.7/8.8.5) with SMTP id XAA25351 for ; Mon, 14 Sep 1998 23:46:54 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199809150346.XAA25351@relay.pair.com> Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 22:29:32 -0600 From: RJEnt Reply-To: rjent@rjent.pair.com To: "freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG" Subject: Re: Re: Xwindows sessions from Windoze95? It sells for $200 (last I checked), and you can download a fully-functional demo that will shut itself down after 2 hours of continuous use (but you can restart it again and again, and has no expiration date). X-Win32 will allow you to run your X sessions in a root window, or in multiple client windows, or in both; the latter being a very nifty feature. I played with many X Windows servers for Windows 95, both expensive as well as shareware, including Xceed, and found X-Win32 to be the most stable, and the one that was able to properly display the most X apps and window managers. Check them out at www.starnet.com. - Bill. In order to do so I need to get a new Network card. The one I was thinking of purchasing was the Intel pro/100+ (replaces the 100b card). FreeBSD lists only the pro/100B card on its hardware list. Has anyone used this new pro/100+ card with freeBSD without having to get a new driver (with 2.2.7). I need to do an FTP install so having out of the box support is critical. If this card is not supported what would be a high performance, readily available (pricewatch) alternative with 2.2.7 support. We have a 3com/USR Total Control Rack with a HiPer Access card and a Network Management Card and 4 modems (each has 24 modems I believe). Does anyone have any experience with running the USR Total Control Rack and having it authenticate to a FreeBSD Radius server? Basically I am looking at which Radius software to run, whether it be Merrit or Livingston, etc. Any help would be greatly appriciated. I have been toying with it for a little bit, Setup a radius machine and had the rack authenticate to the Radius machine, but I locked myself out of the rack because its now trying to authenticate to the Radius machine even for the Administrator account and I dont know the correct parameters to set up on the Radius machine to allow the Administrator to log in with the correct permissions. Anyway, that all can be fixed, I was just toying with it. But if anyone has succesfully done this, let me know... Thanks.. I'm sure you've probably already checked out the rather verbose info at www.merit.edu/aaa. I have a ATM network (25 Mbps) as follows; [FreeBSD Box]---+---[Delay generator]---+---[SUN Solaris] | | [Windows 98]----+ +---[Windows NT] | | [Windows NT]----+ +---[FreeBSD 2] The delay generator can introduce the packet delays upto couple of seconds for TCP or UDP packets. When there is no delay, the whole link between left and right side shows the maximum performance which is about 20 Mbps. BUT, once the delay is introduced, the famous rule Capacity = RTT x Bandwidth. and the capacity would be limited by the window size. Here, I used 64K for Window size (65536), so the Bandwidth should be Bandwidth = Capacity (65536) / RTT I made the delay in one way as 200 ms, and RTT becomes 400 ms, so the nominal Bandwidth becomes 1310720 bps = 1.3 Mbps. Curiously enough, between two Windows boxes, the maximum bandwidth is obtained, which is about 1.0 ~ 1.1 Mbps. BUT, for FreeBSD, or for Solaris, I obtain only 200 ~ 300 kbps. (precisely 200 kbps for Solaris, and 300 kbps for FreeBSD). I don't understand what happened, but guess that the UNIX machines may evaluate the RTT in a wrong way or what ... Can anyone have a similar experience, please give me an e-mail. ------------------------------------- Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI ~'/ (o\) ^ \___/o Doctoral Research Engineer Service DEE/IR/TSI/TN Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales 18 Avenue Edouard-Belin 31401 Toulouse cedex 4 France (Tel) +33-561 28 15 31 (Fax) +33-561 28 29 13 (Email) kevin.choi@cnes.fr (www) http://www.chez.com/kichoi/ ------------------------------------- ------=_NextPart_000_0069_01BDE219.7C6DEAC0 Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name="Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI.vcf" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI.vcf" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit BEGIN:VCARD VERSION:2.1 N:CHOI;Kevin;Kyeong-il;; FN:Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI ORG:CNES; TITLE:Dr TEL;WORK;VOICE:(05) 61 28 15 31 TEL;HOME;VOICE:(05) 62 17 01 99 EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:kevin.choi@cnes.fr REV:19980710T091856Z END:VCARD ------=_NextPart_000_0069_01BDE219.7C6DEAC0-- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-net Thu Sep 17 07:43:21 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA16604 for freebsd-net-outgoing; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 07:43:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from implode.root.com (implode.root.com [198.145.90.17]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id HAA16577; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 07:43:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from root@implode.root.com) Received: from implode.root.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by implode.root.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id HAA06002; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 07:37:48 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199809171437.HAA06002@implode.root.com> To: "Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI" cc: "FreeBSD Question" , "FreeBSD Net" , tcp-over-satellite@achtung.sp.trw.com Subject: Re: Why FreeBSD (or Solaris as well) get stuck in case of long delay ? FreeBSD is almost certainly still using a window of 16KB. There are problems in the code related to changing the socket buffer size after the system is up. You pretty much have to modify the default value in the kernel source files in order to use a larger window. -DG David Greenman Co-founder/Principal Architect, The FreeBSD Project To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-net" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-net Thu Sep 17 08:14:09 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA22849 for freebsd-net-outgoing; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 08:14:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from chappe.cnes.fr (chappe.cnes.fr [132.149.22.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA22699; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 08:14:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from kevin.choi@cnes.fr) Received: from pasteur.cst.cnes.fr (pasteur.cnes.fr [132.149.22.8]) by chappe.cnes.fr (8.9.1a/8.9.1a/980831) with ESMTP id RAA20086; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 17:13:24 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from imhotep.cst.cnes.fr (unverified) by pasteur.cst.cnes.fr (Content Technologies SMTPRS 2.0.15) with SMTP id ; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 17:13:58 +0200 Received: from pc-kichoi (pc-kichoi.cst.cnes.fr [132.149.9.82]) by imhotep.cst.cnes.fr (8.6.12/MH-19960223.01) with SMTP id RAA12528; Thu, 17 Sep 1998 17:13:58 +0200 From: "Kevin Kyeong-il CHOI" To: "Joao Carlos Mendes Luis" Cc: "FreeBSD Question" , "FreeBSD Net" Subject: RE: Why FreeBSD (or Solaris as well) get stuck in case of long delay ? If you send a message to bounce@us.net, the server will return your original message with full headers intact. If your message does not come back, it is likely that your return address or some other aspect of your mail service is misconfigured. In the case where mail does not come back, you can send a test message to test@us.net, then pick up the phone and call 301-361-6000 and ask to talk to someone in US Net technical support. When an engineer gets on the line, explain to them that you sent a message to test@us.net and you need them to read the message headers back to you over the phone (test@us.net is just like bounce@us.net, except that a copy of the message is redirected to support@us.net for debugging purposes). Note that bounce@us.net is available for anyone on the net to use, while test@us.net is supposed to be for US Net customers. If you are not a customer of US Net, as long as you are friendly to the engineer on the phone (and the engineer is not busy), most are usually willing to help out with messages sent to test@us.net. On the other hand, if you are not a customer and you ask them to help you debug your mail server configuration (or some other long involved support task), be prepared to pull out your Visa card ...
