The driver is probably winding up performing async transfers to the device due to a bug in the negotiation code. If you boot with "-v" the driver will probably tell you this. All known negotiations problems have been fixed in the CAM version of the driver so you may want to try using CAM on one of your systems. BTW, the WD disks are known to be low on both the performance and quality scale. Seagate is having a version contest with Exabyte! :-) I have: (ahc0:4:0): "ARCHIVE Python 28388-XXX 4.CM" type 1 removable SCSI 2 (ahc0:5:0): "ARCHIVE Python 25601-XXX 2.75" type 1 removable SCSI 2 (ahc0:6:0): "ARCHIVE ANCDA 2750 28077 -003" type 1 removable SCSI 2 and I think I have one of the ARCHIVE Python 25501-XXX 5.45's too, but its turned off and 12 miles away. All of the above have been quite reliable. Just what again does this new firmware fix? Does Seagate have a firmware site or is this something you have to call and beg for? Patrick Hausen told me, that under Linux the drive runs ok with amanda. So I think it's a FreeBSD SCSI problem.
