The driver is probably winding up performing async transfers to the device due to a bug in the negotiation code. If you boot with "-v" the driver will probably tell you this. All known negotiations problems have been fixed in the CAM version of the driver so you may want to try using CAM on one of your systems. BTW, the WD disks are known to be low on both the performance and quality scale.
