While on the face of it 16MHz is a hell of a lot faster than 33.6kHz, the time taken to service an interrupt, process the packet and send it on combined with the margin needed so that you dont loose any bytes while doing something else means that you need a 486 to do it safely. The best I've ever gotten out of a 386SX-20 with a 16450 UART was 1.0k/second. It actually ran better with the port speed set to 9600 as not no many bytes were lost! -- Michael To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Mon Jun 1 00:06:10 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id AAA14064 for freebsd-small-outgoing; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 00:06:10 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gta.gta.com (gta.gta.com [199.120.225.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id AAA13948 for ; Mon, 1 Jun 1998 00:05:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from paul@gta.com) Message-Id: <199806010711.DAA13036@gta.gta.com> Received: forwarded by SMTP 1.6.0. Our system is based on FreeBSD, however all the firewall, NAT and most of the functionality other than the kernel core code, PPP and the like was written by us (GTA, Inc.) originally back in 1994. I would love to use a couple of FWTK proxies on a small FreeBSD system loaded from a floppy or two. The problem is I can't make it out what is the right way of telling FreeBSD there is _no_ swap space available. Or is swapping an absolute must for *BSD ? Since proxies fork a child for each serviced request what will happen when there is no more free memory _and no_ swap ? Will the kernel panic or will just fork fail ? Thanks. There are two sysctl's for this: vm.defer_swapspace_pageouts vm.disable_swapspace_pageouts When set to 1, the first tells VM to avoid paging, and the second tells it the system doesn't have any swap. When there are no free pages available, and the process demands them (e.g. by forking), the system will kill offending process (or is it a random process which is the victim? I don't remember, but be prepared for frequent deaths.. :-) The kernel shouldn't panic, but the programs better be well designed to behave appropriately when they can't fork... Thank you for the info. But aren't these version 3.0 sysctl's by any chance ? On my FreeBSD 2.2.5 sysctl -a doesn't show these oids. It has vm.swapping_enabled though. I once tried setting it to 0, but the system still swapped. Evidently I missed something. Could I make a very small RAM disk and > tell FreeBSD to swap on it ? If yes _how_ can I make a RAM disk for 2.2.5 ? I'm pretty sure this won't work the way you expect it to. If the VM subsytem feels like it needs to swap out some pages, then it means it's low on memory, i.e. it lacks the free pages. Given a constant amount of RAM available, if you take some of it to make a RAM disk, this space will be permamently lost to the VM subsystem, and consequently it will have even less free pages to use, and it will start swapping much earlier. So, using up some memory to create a RAM-based swap area makes things worse, not better. How can you make a RAM disk? Simple: mount_mfs -T minimum -s 4096 /dev/null /mnt or something very similar... But it would be far worse if the system thought there was swap space somewhere and counted on it. If I can not find a correct way of telling it there is no swap available, I'd prefer to fool it this way. After all memory is always finit, swap or no swap. I downloaded build scripts for PicoBSD 0.31 and all conf files include a line: config kernel root on wd0a swap on wd0a What does 'swap on wd0a' mean ? Will the kernel expect to find an IDE disk with a swap area ? Or will it be meaningless until a swapon is issued ? Thanks for your tip on mount_mfs. This magic incantation was taken from GENERIC config file, and as far as my knowledge goes is obsolete and not needed [*]. I _think_ it tells kernel your preference... I'll remove it to avoid misunderstanding. [*] except in one case when it reads "swaps on generic" (notice "swaps", not "swap" :-((( ) and tells config(8) to include procedures to mount root on arbitrary chosen slices... You reach saturation pretty quickly with a 386sx-16, but... Just as a data point. Our department network at the U of U EE department had grown to about 350 computers... PC's, Suns, HP's, Macs, etc. All on one wire. Periods of high network traffic would bring it to it's knees. In an effort to improve throughput, I built a 486-66 with 5 ISA ethernet cards (NE2000 clones-the cheapest of the cheap) and configured it to be a router using FreeBSD. We broke our one wire into 4 segments geographically (roughly one segment per floor) and the improvement was MORE than dramatic. Originally, this was just an experiment to demonstrate that it could be done. I feared that a lowly 486-66 would run out of horsepower during peaks (such as lunchtime when everyone seems to want to surf while eating lunch at their desks, we even NFS-mount disks on our Suns through it) and I'd soon be replacing it with a Pentium, but so far we've not been able to overwhelm this little router, even when we try to. For what it's worth... I know that this is not a valid comparison, yet I'd suggest trying the 386sx-16 if it's not being used. What have you got to lose? And, you'll learn a lot. You can still prove the concept, then look around for a faster machine if needed. For this i use some features only present in FreeBSD 3.0: For all these stuff i asumme that the floppy is made using the same techniques found in boot.flp or PicoBSD. - I use the New SLICE code with DEVFS: It permit to auto populate the /dev directory, so i will not use a lot of inodes for this purprose, this can be converted to space by reducing the inode per cylinder group when i use newfs. Warning: At least an empty /dev/ must exist, if not init will hang. It is also usefull to know exactly what's on the PC. - I use 1800 KB instead of 1440 kb for MFS in kernel root fs: So i can put more things in the MFS, i cannot use all the space, but the space remaining will be considered like free space on the root fs. Usefull for temporary files. My kzip kernel load at an address below 4 MB but it work, FreeBSD isn't magic ? - I use a single big script.sh containing a lot of simple functions, it is being sourced, so i do not need a lot of files. It deos not consume lot's of inodes etc ... - I sometime use rawboot instead of the regular newfs for the floppy. It save me some space, but i cannot put a beautifull boot message :-) Misclaneous tips: - I use set -E for /bin/sh ( ash ) to make it more Unix friendly. I also use this function in the .profile for /bin/sh giving a smart prompt. cd() { command cd $1 CWD=`pwd` ; export CWD PS1="$USER@$HOSTNAME $CWD > " export PS1 } I also use moused, and the French LOCALE ( but i like the luxe ! ) Here is an example of what kind of programs i put on a floppy usage: net6 ..., where is one of: init sh -sh chroot mount mount_ufs vidcontrol moused fdwrite date -date test [ chat reboot halt ln kill sleep tee rm sysctl hostname vnconfig syslogd pwd stty hexdump od hd fsck sync swapon umount ls dir dd cp mkdir md df mv cat more ee edit mount_msdos msdos mount_cd9660 cd9660 mount_ext2fs ext2fs mount_std procfs mount_procfs devfs mount_devfs mt tar gzip gunzip ping pppd ifconfig route arp telnet Telnet ftp fetch pftp gate-ftp mount_nfs nfs ftpd telnetd inetd login getty portmap nfsd mountd net6 Notice the use of syslogd, it's extremly small and usefull for debugging since we cannot run all the tools for this ( netstat etc ... ) I simply cannot live without :) In syslogd.conf i put: *.* /dev/ttyv3 It's amasing how a little floppy can transform a WIN95 PC into a powerfull NFS server... ( ... and a telnet, ftp, ppp server, and the with all the client stuff ... ) The NeXT STEP is to put a samba server on it... That's all folk's ! Hope this will help. However, this stuff is still made of glass, and any uncareful treatment breaks it to pieces. As it is now, the DEVFS panics when mounting an msdos floppy, so I'd say let's wait with it a while. Once it's relatively stable, it will be a big win - big savings on number of required inodes, no need to manually create the right set of device nodes etc... And DEVFS is purely 3.0-current thing - I doubt it will ever be ported to 2.2.x line... I'm afraid that's bad news for you, Dinesh :-( but it would require massive changes in kernel... It would have been ripped out if it weren't for the large volume of gratuitous change it would cause. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-small" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-small Wed Jun 3 16:25:22 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA27081 for freebsd-small-outgoing; Wed, 3 Jun 1998 16:25:22 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from alpo.whistle.com (alpo.whistle.com [207.76.204.38]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA27026 for ; Wed, 3 Jun 1998 16:25:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from julian@whistle.com) Received: (from daemon@localhost) by alpo.whistle.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id QAA14352; Wed, 3 Jun 1998 16:22:58 -0700 (PDT) Received: from current1.whistle.com(207.76.205.22) via SMTP by alpo.whistle.com, id smtpd014346; Wed Jun 3 23:22:56 1998 Message-ID: <3575DACA.167EB0E7@whistle.com> Date: Wed, 03 Jun 1998 16:22:50 -0700 From: Julian Elischer Organization: Whistle Communications X-Mailer: Mozilla 3.0Gold (X11; I; FreeBSD 2.2.5-RELEASE i386) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Dinesh Nair CC: Andrzej Bialecki , Alain Brauner , freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Tips and tricks References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG The DEVFS in 2.2.x is similar to that in 3.0 however there are a few points.. The interface between the current disk slicing code and DEVFS is rather strained. For this reason, devfs has trouble in 2.2 being used at boot time as /dev. This can be fixed, but the changes going into -current to do so are to far-reaching to be thinkable in -stable. These are in -current under the option SLICE. having said that, devfs could be used as /dev on a system using a mfs root without too much difficulty. the problem would be that you would have ot touch each raw drive before all the subslices turned up. I have hear of people using it under -stable with NFS mounted systems. The goal is to demonstrate how much power their old machine has when using a better OS. Question: How hard is it to get the boot process to do a brute force analysis of a system of unknown IRQs put together a working config and boot successfully without user intervention? Here is the situation that brings this to the fore: So yesterday I installed 2.2.6 on some hardware of unknown origin. It consists of a P75, IDE controller with unknown harddrive, floppy, unknown NIC card, unknown video adapter, and 16MB of main memory. The reason these are unknown is that the controllers weren't name brand and in the case of the NIC card it was inherited from some other "functioning system". The plan was to use the distribution sitting on a local ftp server to do the install. All kernel device probes detected the hardware fine. Problem occurred when the install actually wanted to use the NIC. It timed out because the kernel used the wrong IRQ(5). After several re-attempts setting the IRQ for the NIC by hand each time IRQ 9 worked. Can anyone steer me to a solution or is anyone already working on this problem? Bryan. But I doubt you can fit the browser on a floppy, and still have room for Java VM and the classes... I'm not saying it's impossible, I just would like to see it myself :-)) OTOH, if you have specific idea how to do this, I'd love to know it. I already thought about this, and my idea was to prepare an image of FFS filesystem that could be put as a file on DOS partition, and then vnconfig it and mount as root. There you could fit all you want... If interested try http://www.qnx.com/iat/index.html. Pretty interesting, QNX real-time OS and Photon microGUI windowing system (looks like X, but under the hood I don't know). Also includes, what I assume to be their own, web browser and server. Pretty cool and pretty tiny. But that is the business QNX is in. I see trouble for them in the future though from Windows CE. Not because CE is superior, just because it is compatible with the other Windows OSes. Witness the recent announcement from Sega and Microsoft regarding the use of Windows CE in Sega's next generation game console 'Dreamcast'. http://www.microsoft.com/corpinfo/press/1998/may98/segagmpr.htm __________ Rick Siple RickSiple@MPAInc.com > -----Original Message----- > From: Andrzej Bialecki [SMTP:abial@nask.pl] > Sent: Friday, June 05, 1998 4:28 PM > To: Bryan Mann > Cc: freebsd-small@FreeBSD.ORG > Subject: Re: P-n-P > > On Fri, 5 Jun 1998, Bryan Mann wrote: > > > > > Hello all, > > > > Issue: > > > > I'd like to be able to hand people a couple of picoBSD floppies > > with a Java capable browser, possibly a trimmed communicator, have > > them install it on on their DOS/Win3.1 machines and just work > > similar to some Linux distributions. The install would essentially be a DOS/Windows install that throws the OS and other software onto the harddrive and as it's last piece of business asks if the user wants to launch FreeBSD/X. If they select yes then run a special just installed bootpico.exe, if they select no then later they could click an icon that was added to their Windows interface or a single .bat file added to launch FreeBSD/X from DOS. My plan was that when they booted the system would come up with an X-login and have a simple X desktop just below that.
