It has the i960 onboard for the I20 bus, 7 pci slots, onboard Adaptec 2940W, and a Cirrus 1MB video card. It supports dual PPro and DIMMs also. I am just curious if anyone is running one of these, or any I20 motherboard for that matter. Thanks. Kyle Mestery StorageTek's Network Systems Group "Keep honking, I'm reloading." According to the archives, people have stated that it is a poorly implemented interrupt/apic setup on the Motherboard. The machine is a Gateway NS-7000 with 2 300 mhz Pentium II processors. The motherboard in this machine appears to be the ALR revolution 2x. Is there any way I can fix this problem or am I doomed to running it in single cpu mode? It runs great most of the time. Sometimes, if the system load is too big, it hangs dead. Oh well, it only happened once -- when I did a make -j 10. However, which really annoys me is that, it never seems to use the swap space. I've allocated 250 MB of swap space on this machine but I still get "not enough memory" from netscape all the time. Using either top or xsysinfo show that the swap is still hanging freely when this occurs. I've seen the swap space got used once when I was compiling a huge program. What could be the problem? Am I missing something very obvious? Please let me know if more info is needed (mptable or dmesg perhaps?) The only driver I've been able to get sound working with on this machine/kernel is "Luigi's" plug and play pcm driver. I couldn't get the "standard" Voxware drivers to work at all, and the OSS drivers (which I bought) don't work with SMP kernels (annoyingly enough). Luigi's sound driver works OK, but I'd like to see a more robust, complete sound solution for this machine. When I try to run "timidity" (the software wavetable midi player which used the GUS patch set), it starts out sounding nice for about half a second. Then it starts mixing in an incredible amount of noise until its completely unbearable to listen to. Similarly, some games (like xgal) make horrible noises... I wonder if this could have something to do with SMP? Other things, such as xanim, mpg123, and a few others render sound without any trouble. Ok, I know the problem: many apps ported to voxware use the device in non blocking mode, and rely on the ability to set the buffer size in the device driver. Then in many case they fail to check for short writes. This is a bug which might go unnoticed on slow systems if data is produced more slowly than the card can consume them. But you evidently have a top-speed system... Of course properly written software (e.g. xanim, mpg123, amp...) does not have the problem. Software which is poorly written (at least in the audio module -- and that's quite frequent) shows the problem. In some cases I have fixed audio modules, but not for most games since I don't run them :) cheers luigi -----------------------------+-------------------------------------- Luigi Rizzo | Dip. di Ingegneria dell'Informazione email: luigi@iet.unipi.it | Universita' di Pisa tel: +39-50-568533 | via Diotisalvi 2, 56126 PISA (Italy) fax: +39-50-568522 | http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ _____________________________|______________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-smp Thu Feb 12 12:03:04 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA20251 for freebsd-smp-outgoing; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:03:04 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-smp@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from mercury.Sun.COM (mercury.Sun.COM [192.9.25.1]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id MAA20246; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:03:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dcmyers@concord.Corp.Sun.COM) Received: from Corp.Sun.COM ([129.145.35.78]) by mercury.Sun.COM (SMI-8.6/mail.byaddr) with SMTP id MAA06990; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:02:27 -0800 Received: from mpk05.Corp.Sun.COM by Corp.Sun.COM (SMI-8.6/SMI-5.3) id MAA25026; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:02:23 -0800 Received: from concord.Corp.Sun.COM by mpk05.Corp.Sun.COM (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id MAA02839; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:02:27 -0800 Received: from concord.corp.sun.com by concord.Corp.Sun.COM (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id MAA09996; Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:02:21 -0800 Message-Id: <199802122002.MAA09996@concord.Corp.Sun.COM> Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 12:02:18 -0800 (PST) From: david.myers@Corp.Sun.COM Subject: Re: Sound trouble To: adhir@worldbank.org cc: smp@FreeBSD.ORG, multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-smp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > OSS drivers (which > I bought) don't work with SMP kernels (annoyingly enough). Could you send the following to the list (smp@freebsd.org): - your config file - the output of mptable -dmesg -verbose (you can do this from a uniprocessor kernel) That will probably help folks diagnose your problem. Just a quick note -- if you don't have MP Spec v1.4 enabled in your BIOS, turn it on and try the SMP kernel again. I've "partially" solved the problem by assigning myself to a logging class. However the swap space is still not used. I guess I haven't strain the system enough. (Hey, don't blame me, the FreeBSD box I was using had only 32M.) > I believe this is a known bug in netscape, and not specific to SMP. What about Netscape 4? Everytime I execute netscape4, the X windows will exit without saying anything. Does it has to do with how the distributed program got compiled? Thanks, Nanbor p.s. BTW, thank you all for the great job. From my own, and other folks' experience, you probably need to enable MP Spec version 1.4 in your BIOS in order for the SMP kernel to work. (This isn't always the case, but with newer motherboards, it definitely seems to be...) So, go into your BIOS, find the option that lets you change the MP Spec version, and change it to 1.4. Send mail back to the list and let us know whether this fixes your problem.. Most 440FX and 440LX machines that I've heard of have an option to switch back and forth between 1.1 and 1.4. He has a Natoma chipset board, so he most likely does have an option in his bios to switch to MP Spec version 1.4. Neptune chipset boxes only do 1.1, IIRC, but they do work. So, I guess the "right" thing to say is that if you have an option in your BIOS to enable MP Spec version 1.4, do it. If not, and your machine doesn't work with an SMP kernel, there's probably some other problem.
